Lowkey a rant post but I seriously need people to understand that when it comes to live action adaptations, especially in American media, the final product you are getting that is on screen is a result of numerous edits done because the producers/executive producers/marketing or whatever the fuck didn't like what the writers presented. In the media industry, it is so incredibly rare for the final product to be identical to the original script that the writers wrote/what the director(s) wanted. Producers are some scummy assholes that want to feel like they're contributing creatively to the project and if they don't get a resounding 'yes' from the writers/director, then they'll pull funding from the project. It's some bullshit but it's the reality of the business. And for the record, I'm currently in college studying the entertainment industry. I even had to do a mock show pitch with a group, and my professor is well versed in how this industry works and how producers act. If you want a show, especially live action adaptation to make it off the ground, you have to cut things that while YOU think it's integral to the overarching storyline, the producer doesn't because it costs too much/it's too polarizing/it's too diverse/it's not mainstream etc. etc.
Anyway I'm gonna go to bed now. I just really want people to use their brains and understand that it's the producers who are oftentimes behind the problems you have with a live action adaptation.

I've been seeing your takes in the Invisigal tag and I've liked them, so I hope it's okay if I rant about some things related to her. Okay, so I'm not going to pretend Visi is completely unproblematic and that people don't have valid reasons to dislike her. The locker room scene and watching Robert get changed...I have no defense for that. I wish those scenes were written better or cut out cause they weren't really that essential to the game to begin with. And I do agree that Invisgal's character could have been written so much better.
All that being said, boy is some of the popular criticism around her starting to pmo. The people saying that she's too immature and doesn't act like a 27 year old? News flash: plenty of adults in real life still act like immature teenagers, including people I've seen on this own damn website. Not saying that people can't dislike her because of this, but I wish people would quit acting like her being like that at 27 is soooo unrealistic and it would make waaay more sense if she was a teenager.😑 I also get tired of people hating on Visi for her flaws but then conveniently ignoring the same flaws in the characters they like. Visi's gross because she says perverted stuff? So does Sonar, but he's become the Tumblr sexy man of this series. Visi's terrible because she makes sexual advances on Robert without asking first? Malevola outright gropes Robert's dick and he's shown to be uncomfortable about that, but yeah, she would totally be a better love interest. Don't even get me started on how some Blonde Blazer fans lowkey give BB and Visi the Madonna/Whore treatment respectively the way that they talk about how BB is soooo much better for Robert than Visi and downplay her flaws. I like BB too and tbh I do think she is the healthier option, but I hate how her stans act like they're morally superior for picking the "better" person.
And I am aware that it's easier for people to have a problem with Visi's flaws because they are very up front and center in the game especially since her route does feel pushed onto the player and the writers tend to play her more problematic moments off for laughs. It just frustrates me when people only call out Visi's behavior and then ignore similar behavior from their favorite characters. Sorry this was so long. I just have a lot of thoughts about Visi and at the end of the day, I just wish her character had better writers.
First of all, anon, completely agree with you that the double standards with Visi vs. anyone else are annoying. Hell, even the watching Robert change thing - BLAZER does that, and I have never seen it brought up. (the Madonna/Whore complex observation is SO REAL lol). Visi gets grief for things that other characters literally do within the same story. And COMPLETELY agree with the "she's too old to act this way" arguments being silly because, like. of course there are 27 year olds who act like her.
But I'm going to disagree with part of what you said and say something controversial:
I don't have any issue with the way Invisigal is written. I don't think she needed better writing, and I don't think certain scenes needed to be changed to be more palatable.

The thing is, no good character is going to be completely unproblematic. Both because that usually leads to a boring or static character, but also because PEOPLE are not completely unproblematic. I don't think it's fair to say "characters should have flaws to be realistic, but only flaws that aren't too uncomfortable for me."
This argument is coming up that Invisigal is badly written because certain things make people uncomfortable and if only she was written better, she would be less problematic - but she's not badly written. She's written consistently. Her actions SAY SOMETHING about her character.
Visi thinking she has villain powers goes beyond her thinking she can't cut it as a hero -- she literally doesn't see a heroic use for her powers. She's learned how to use her invisibility in a solely selfish way -- to steal, to snoop, to fight people, even to be a voyeur. The same way Flambae uses his powers to cause fires he can put out to boost his own numbers in the ranking, (something strongly implied by dialogue) Visi uses hers to benefit herself.
Crossing people's boundaries is ingrained behavior for her. So yeah, when she starts developing a crush on Robert -- something that seems to be new for her
she does what she always does and uses her powers to spy on him and Blazer and then uses them to sneak into the bathroom to confront him.
I've seen people say that the game doesn't frame this behavior as bad and that's a problem. As opposed to, say, Robert throwing something at Flambae after he bullies Waterboy. But the thing about the bathroom scene is that Robert DOES call out this behavior and Visi is framed as ridiculous for doing this. She's the butt of the joke at the end of the scene. (Not that I NEED the game to tell me what's right or wrong, but it's also just...not a fair observation. This behavior IS consistently framed as ridiculous/immature/unprofessional)
On top of all that, Visi is impulsive. She does not think through her decisions, she reacts with emotion. Robert insults her, she punches him. It looks like she's going to be cut, she decides to give up. Chase says she's not a hero, she decides to go after the Pulse alone to prove she is.
(She's so emotionally dysregulated that if the game hadn't made it canon she has ADHD, I still would have assumed it. Like. Seriously. So much of her behavior makes perfect sense when you realize she's an ADHD adult who probably never learned good habits and grew up in bad environments)
So let's look at the locker room scene for a minute. I'm not going to argue whether this was correct behavior or not -- the reality is this is a common trope in fiction (that I have rarely seen get as much push back when the genders are flipped, despite what people say) that ALSO could be sexual harassment if this happened in real life and gets more complicated based on what decisions you the player were making leading up to it because it changes your reading of it. It's messy. People are going to have different reactions to it.
But WHY was this written into the scene and what does it tell us about Visi the character?
Visi is at her absolute lowest here. She had been doing well before this, starting to believe she really could be a hero and make up for past mistakes, and then (in her eyes) she gets Chase killed. It reinforces her belief AGAIN that she might as well give up, because she's never going to succeed. In certain dialogue choices, she even says, "I'm incapable of doing good."
This is rock bottom for her.
Invisigal is a character who hates herself. She doesn't see herself as worthy of love or support. It's not healthy, but she NEEDS external validation. And she seeks it out in Robert. And it gets wrapped up in messy, romantic feelings while she's at it.
When Visi walks out of this scene, I think she's planning on leaving forever, regardless of whether she's cut or just suspended. Robert clocks it too.
So in Visi's head, this is goodbye. But she needs, desperately, to feel like someone capable of being loved in this moment and she does what she ALWAYS does and acts impulsively based on that emotion.
Her kissing Robert in this moment is PERFECTLY in character. And it further characterizes her as someone who, despite all her bravado, despite all her pushing people away with jokes and shying away from emotional connection, desperately wants someone to love her so that she can maybe love herself.
And yes, I can understand how this moment is uncomfortable. But so is Visi's mental state. So is her desperation. So is her view of herself. So is Invisigal herself because she's not an easy person to deal with. If this scene gets toned down to be 100% acceptable behavior, does it still say the same things about Visi? Does it still show her as the broken, lonely, exhausted person she is?
I don't think it does. And that's why it's in there.
So, yeah, I do agree with most of what you said, but you touched on something that I keep seeing expressed that I just flat-out disagree with.
Like if we're going to talk about writing issues, there's something to be said about the fact that the two romance options just aren't equal in the narrative because Visi and her relationship to Robert is a lot more central to the story than Blazer and Robert. And I think the last act of the game feels a little rushed - there are certain aspects I think could have been handled better.
But I strongly disagree with Visi's intentionally written behavior being bad writing.
it starts with sonar. something he says casually, like it’s natural to drop a pet name while passing you in the hallway. “excuse me, sweetheart,” said as cheerful as if he was telling you what he’s having for dinner tonight. he loves it when he can hear your pulse increase.
then malevola catches on, albeit with a little more enthusiasm. “hey, love,” she’ll purr, tail flicking excitedly when you get all flustered. she likes to press herself to your back and whisper the pet name, grinning against your neck when she feels your heart flutter.
then waterboy and prism get to it.
waterboy’s a lot more nervous at using pet names, so he usually uses some variation of your name, red-faced while he stutters it out. it’s sweet, really.
prism knows how to get under your skin. “thanks, babe,” she’ll say, fingers caressing your face while she applies makeup or eyeliner. she knows how to tack on a well-placed petname to keep you still and pliable, and it works every time.
robert’s the worst with it, though. he knows how to use it in a way the rest of z-team doesn’t. with that quiet voice, and the way he looks at you like you’re the only thing that matters…he manages to key you up and have you dazed in a matter of seconds.
“hey, baby,” said quietly as he edges past you to get to the coffee machine.
“thank you, sweetheart,” whispered in that rough way that has shivers running down your spine.
they know damn well what they’re doing, but if you want them to admit it, it’s going to be hard.
✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.
✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.
✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.
✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.
✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
✧ Scars tell stories. Some fade, some don’t. Some stay sensitive forever. Don’t forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.
It's the way that I have a prologue + 4 chapters already written in my drafts for an x reader fic that is frankly kind of insane. I have decided to merge Ben10 and The Incredibles (The Glory Days). Reader is Ben's twin and I'm giving them extremely low self worth and unhealthy coping mechanisms. What the fuck is going on in my brain dude. I am absolutely kind of insane for this.
