So many of my family members are dealing with this. And they’ve found that the company has made opting out of auto pay damn near impossible. The place where it used to be on the site has changed, calling results in getting disconnected, when they finally found it on the site, it “times out” when they try to cancel….its just a fucking mess.
We got lucky. I’m like 80% sure we have a rate cap because I haven’t seen it spike and I’ve been watching it fairly closely. But I’ve got aunts, geandparents, friends who have had their entire paycheck taken for electric bills when they barely had power for 3 hours over the course of 5 days. Money they needed to replace food gone bad, to fix water damage, to make car repairs, all gone to a bill that shouldn’t even exist because they didn’t even have power for 3 days.
Friendly tip from a long-time bank employee… If your money is on autopay directly from your account# or card, you can put a STOP PAYMENT on that shit! But do it at least 3 days before it is due to be pulled from your account. There may be a $20-30 fee for it, but that is much better than a power company trying to pull hundreds from your account and overdrafting you.
Also, if they already pulled a ridiculous amount of money from you… if you believe that the charges are for power that you did not use you likely can file a dispute with your bank. If you lost power tell them about that and say that services were not received, or if there are sudden new previously not disclosed fees you can state that the price is different than disclosed. Those sorts of reasons should keep banking systems from messing with the account itself, as it would do for a fraud claim. Filing a dispute against your power company might not get you your money back, but it MAY. It may also allow the bank to waive a stop payment fee if you fear a second round of hiked rates. Just ask the banker about that before filing the stop paymen as some systems will ONLY waive the fee if it’s done DURING the dispute process….
But! You have to remember that the stop payment is there until YOU remove it. While some banks may remove them after 6 months, or 1-5 years…. it will be your responsibility to remember to reestablish your payment relationship with the power company, and you’ll also then need to let your bank about it when you want to start allowing payments to process again so they can remove the block.
And for those worried that it might somehow look shady: No, the banker will NOT think you’re trying to pull a fast one. The banker is 10000% likely to be on your side when you explain the situation and ask them questions.
If this information helps even one person then I’ll consider it a wonderful use of my time to type it out and post it. Y’all stay STRONG!!!
[id= a tweet by @ apexxlexx “Texas friends- take your electric bills off auto-pay. My billing cycle just started this week and it’s already 8 times my normal payment with 25 days left to go. I sat in the dark and barely used my heat. We need to demand relief for these bills. This is so criminal and evil.” with the phrase “take your electric bills off auto-pay” and the word “time” in all caps /end id]
I used to be able to write around 2000 words in one writing session, sometimes more. Nowadays, I'm lucky if I hit 500 after forcing myself, which further dissuades me from writing, even though I love to. Do you know of any way to get back into the 'writing grove'? Or a way to help me feel better about any progress at all? Sorry if this ask sounds pathetic, but I just want to get back into, writing again.
One really important thing to remember is that you can only ever do your best. Another important thing to remember is that your best will be different on any given day and at different moments in your life.
Your best used to be 2000 words in a day. Now, your best is 500. Your life probably looks a lot different now from what it looked like back then, and that’s having an impact.
I used to be able to answer 5 questions a day on this blog. Sometimes 10. Per. Day. Can you imagine? Nowadays I can barely manage 10 in a week most of the time. But I had a serious health issue last year. I’m living through a pandemic. I got a promotion that gives me more responsibilities at work. I’ve got a lot of shit going on right now, so expecting myself to be able to do what I used to be able to do is just setting myself up for failure and guilt and a lot of feeling not good enough.
You’re not pathetic. You’re going through a rough patch. Instead of aiming for 2000 words, aim for something else. Celebrate having the time to write. Celebrate getting a paragraph down, or a sentence. Realize that planning a story and deciding on a title and figuring out the tags are all part of the process too. If you can’t write the story, do some research for it or edit something you already wrote. All of that is important too and all of that might be easier than being creative right now.
If your battery is depleted, that’s a sign that you need to take a break. That might mean allowing yourself to write less. It might mean allowing yourself to stop completely for a little while.
Forcing it works for some people, but if it makes you not want to write at all? Then forcing it doesn’t work for you. Take some time to think about what you need right now and give yourself that gift. You’re worth it.
I used to be able to write one or two ~3k oneshots per week. In 2019 I wrote 4 stories over 10k (which, for me, is what for others is a 100k epic).
Now? Now I’m happy if I write anything at all. Weeks go by without a single word and if I manage 2k in the span of a month? Cause for celebration.
Nothing has really changed for me, personally, despite 2020. I’ve still slowed down considerably.
Maybe you’re not in that insane first love phase with your fandom anymore. The burning passion has simmered down to a much more enduring but less output-producing longterm-love. Mabye your’re thinking more about what you want to write and how to write it. That’s certainly true for me.
Maybe, just maybe and also speaking from personal experience here, you’re just burned out from writing so much so quickly and need to find your way back to a more sustainable way of interacting with your fandom and writing again.
And, another maybe, maybe you’re getting ready to move on from your current fandom but haven’t consciously realized that yet.
It’s okay. Take your time and one day you’ll see what’s going on. In the meantime... enjoy what words you can write. Treasure them. But don’t force yourself to write.
Couldn't agree more. As a background, I'm a poet and writer irl, that's like side hustle from my main job in IT-related. I'm a contest hunter so I train myself a lot in types of writing and write for purposes. Also sometimes a local magazine wants to raise an awareness about something so I'm involved in a pro-bono project. But all this writing activities really drain me out. I used to be religious for my writing schedule when last year I joined many online courses. Woke up at 5.30, wrote daily, produced outputs. But I got stuck and my plot became shitty because I HAD to fulfil X amount of words everyday. Quantity over quality.
It's good to stop pushing yourself crazy. My day job is also demanding. It would be just insane if I could keep up marathoning writing and job like that for months.
I rmb a saying: "Every new stage of your life requires a new you".
It doesn't mean now you stop writing. It means you can stop chasing word count, and improve in quality or sanity that once you looked over. Good luck!

I call upon the fan fic writing gods to bless you with the perseverance to finish one of your unfinished drafts.
May your fingers dance along the letters upon your device with ease, may the devil of distraction stay far from you, and may your work not need much editing.
I pass this blessing upon every fan fic writer out there.
