Incel activity online is evolving to become more extreme, study shows

Incel activity online is evolving to become more extreme as some of the online spaces hosting its violent and misogynistic content are shut down and new ones emerge, a new study shows.

Experts tracking the evolution of the conglomerate of online spaces known as the “incelosphere” have discovered the nature of discussions have become more extreme and that real-world events such as the 2018 Toronto van attack had an impact on online activity.

Levels of violent extremist language vary across different parts of the incelosphere and have steadily increased in the main online spaces over the past six years. There are now new prominent incel spaces online, and the incelosphere is a continually evolving ecosystem connected to other online extremist ecosystems.

Dr. Lewys Brace and Professor Stephane Baele from the University of Exeter, and Professor Debbie Ging from Dublin City University analyzed the largest known linguistic corpus of incel online content, millions of posts across all of the major incel online spaces between 2014 and 2022, aided with with a custom dictionary of incel violent extremist language they have produced.

Professor Baele said, “We have found clear evidence of a greater volume of incel discussion online over time, including an increasing use of dehumanizing labels and words depicting violence.”

Do you ever think about how much gendered grooming expectations exist to exaggerate sexual dimorphism in humans(which is much much more subtle than a lot of other animals) ? All the little grooming things- hair and make up and shaving and nails and clothing, all serve the function of strangers being able to guess your gender from a distance?

what we learn in biological anthropology is that everyone exists on a spectrum of typical “feminine” and “masculine” traits (im mostly talking about skeletons here but it applies to everything else too) and that these traits can a) vary widely based on your age, genetics, environment, diet, etc and b) actually change over time bc of the previous factors (eg skeletons of people who are AFAB actually tend to become more “masculine” in old age bc their bones get more robust/large). it’s a cool reminder that a lot of the physical differences that people try to emphasize for sexist/transphobic arguments are essentially meaningless.

I think its also worth noting that almost all the work in making this differentiation is put on women. By MODERN gender roles, men are encouraged to be “manly” by doing as little alteration as possible, except for keeping their hair short.

The more labor intensive stuff? Make up, shaving, etc, falls to women.

 SO TODAY I was walking to college down a main road, it was really windy (as you might imagine with all the cars) and I was preocupied with keeping a grip on my beanie when I saw these two women walking a little way ahead of me on the other side of the road. One of these ladies was a bit taller than the other and they were holding hands (aww), the taller kinda butch lady had a flannel shirt on (double aww) and her partner/friend was wearing a cute cream and beige hijab. Now I swear to God this is relevant, wait for it.

A massive gust of wind suddenly comes tearing along the main road. I nearly lose my backpack, to give an idea of how bad it was. I look up and see the wind rip off this poor girls hijab and send it spiriling away down the street. (She had an undercap on so no major crisis but still, right.) 

Before. You. Can. Blink. Our taller flannel-wearing girlfriend of the year TEARS off her flannel like lesbian Clark f***** Kent, throws her shirt over her partners head, and BAM she sprints off LIKE A SHOT after the hijab.

Why is everyone changing their privacy policy

This is popping up because a European Union set of standards/laws/directive, called General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is going into effect, and is enforceable as of Friday, May 25th, 2018.  The policy basically mandates that internet companies don’t get to collect what’s called personally identifiable information (IP and MAC addresses, physical addresses, the content of your posts, and so on) without the user’s consent to do so, and that the user can revoke consent at any time. As a result, basically every company on the internet, all of whom rely on collecting and selling this information, are updating their terms of services, particularly if they are based in Europe, or understand you to be European. 

A big challenge for a lot of these companies is a provision called “Right of Erasure” which means if you revoke consent to have your data processed by a company, they have to delete that data.   Basically everyone in the industry hates it, but it’s a big win for consumers, if you’re in the EU, of course.

If you’re outside of the EU, this stuff doesn’t apply to you, but in many cases it’s easier for a firm to change its policies to be GDPR compliant everywhere, or alternatively let everyone know that they have to consent to whatever terms the firm demands if they are to continue using the product.
