I'm not sure if I've been steeped in fanon for too long or if Dick's colleagues just don't pay that much attention, but is it not common knowledge that Dick was raised by Bruce Wayne? And adopted by him while he was working BPD? Like?? They know he's from Gotham but not that Bruce raised him and is his adoptive father?? It's been bothering me since he moved to Bludhaven

As far as I remember, Dick's move to Blüd was in part about distancing himself from Bruce. They had those fights where Bruce came to check on him and Dick got all defensive about Blüd being "his city" and that Bruce wasn't in charge here. He got a job to not be reliant on Bruce's money, etc. So I doubt when he talked to his friends he was like: "my father, billionaire Bruce Wayne,...." He probably never named him.

This, plus keeping his last name, plus being (as far as I can tell) out of the public eye, plus Bruce being way less famous in Blüd, there was no reason for anyone to make a connection.

As for the adoption, I'm also fairly sure it was kept private. In big contrast to Tim's, which was made into A Thing on purpose, because it helped them solve a case and save some people.

I mean yes‚ his name is on a bunch of buildings and the Martha & Thomas tragedy was very well known #but people are busy living their lives. The biggest issue with Waid's B&R: Y1 I think is just the fact that he is writing a colder Bruce, which is more in line with Bruce's modern characterization where his post-Dick's firing post-Jason's death post-Justice League related trauma issues are retroactively applied to his entire character - which IS normally something I dislike. When I initially read it I was more alright with it because 1) it does happen to be a Year One comic and it can be justified as a reasonable bridge between the darkness and isolation of his solo characterization and his more open and demonstrative characterization after Dick is introduced and 2) I was simultaneously reading Waid's writing of them in World's Finest where Bruce is closer to his Silver Age/early Post Crisis characterization wrt his relationship with Dick. I do wonder if to some extent though he was afraid of essentially rehashing some of his Flash writing and making them too similar to Barry and Wally, but really they SHOULD be somewhat more similar to that dynamic imo, particularly considering that Wally and Dick have some of the same core issues and just deal with them very differently.

#I suppose he still had to fit Bruce's pre-Batman stories like Batman: The Knight #can't transition from the angsty & full of betrayals & disappointment beginnings straight into fun adventures #and (at least as far as I remember. It's been a while lmao) the trajectory in B&R:YO was Bruce warming up to Dick and loosening up a bit #it's their very beginnings. And also they are very different people and they haven't yet learned how to deal with that #and it's Making Them Stressed.#But it still felt like they would become The Dynamic Duo sometime very soon. At least to me #idk maybe it's my lack of context of older comics but I personally felt like mr. waid made it fit very well with surrounding stories

Biggest tell that someone has not read very much Dick Grayson comic is that they'll have him casually refer to Bruce as "dad" or when with other Robins "our dad". And why would you do that unless you're being forced at gunpoint to emulate Tom Taylor.

Even disregarding all of the times Dick's had issues with Bruce being referred to as his father and his personal conflict with thinking of him that way, there's just the fact that most people who have referred to someone by their first name their whole life don't suddenly start calling them "dad". Like it could literally be a bio parent and if you've been calling them by their first name your whole life you don't generally start calling them "dad" as an adult.

But basically, one of these Things. (There's quite a lot of considerations that when into Tim, but I don't have the energy for all of them, so just want got currently put on my mind.)

One of these things was that there was a whole group of people that simply did not want to accept any Robin that was not Dick Grayson. It's one of the parts of it that's more lost to history as like, a major fan idea, but before there were a bunch of Robins, this was a Real Problem.

How do you win over people that are determined to not be okay with anyone BUT Dick on...basically principle?

Well, have him not go to Batman directly with this whole needing a Robin thing. Have him go to Dick Grayson. Have him tell Dick Grayson to come back to Robin and that he's the ONLY ONE that can do this.

Won over via having the same opinion.

Well, he tried to get Dick Grayson back. He's on YOUR side. But it's not going to work out, Dick can tell the kid directly that's not going to happen.

It was really smart, really. It was really REALLY smart.

It absolutely worked.

It worked to the extent that if you ask people who their favorite Robin is and they have to differentiate between their favorite as a character and their favorite as Robin (rather than it just being the same one for both), "Dick as a character, Tim as Robin" is one of THE most popular answers.

Which is that in all this talk about what's happening with Tim, no one is really talking about how it's presented as part of a series of negative events in "The Long Night", which ends with Bruce here

Bruce may try to act supportive, but at the end of everything it's just another Thing. Not "at least Tim will be happy" after the conversation, it's "oh god, that on top of everything else".

This is a Batman title. The story is about Bruce. And regardless of what you think of various characters' characterization, including his, this is meant and presented as part of a story structure. It's not an isolated event.

Regardless of what it is for Tim or what we may or may not get out of it, story-wise, or if anyone is in anyone's personal definition of in-character, it is a negative thing that happened according to the story trying to be told.

And as such, is setting up his return to be as a positive or satisfactory conclusion.

Which doesn't mean we won't get more wringer first, and I expect we will. (It also reminds me of what someone I was talking to a year ago said they heard at a writer panel answer in regard to Bruce and how he acts because he thinks he's destined to be alone, even if that is incredibly untrue, and I am seeing that kind of theme going on, but I'll try to refrain from too much additional speculation here.)

But anyway, I thought it was an extremely good point and wanted to give it more highlight than just putting it in a reblog because I think it's true that it really is being missed as part of the discussion.

#<3 #+ the fact that Tim has been Robin for decades but stuff that convinces him to take a break happens mostly off-panel #(as in we don't see Tim's internal monologue about his reasons for taking a break. Which makes sense bc like u said this is Bruce's title)#if Tim was actually not returning the writer would milk the drama for several issues #+ this is a superhero genre. A superhero leaving the superhero lifestyle is generally not a positive thing in superhero stories.#I'm sure that there are exceptions but they would need a really compelling reason why for THIS character it would be a positive thing but #not for any other.#Which would need to be discussed at length in the story #and that didn't happen #it can make a compelling story though #the “personal happiness vs helping others” and what a good balance of those would look like #- that's a classic #so yeah

"Crime Alley" as in Park Row, the place that was colloquially renamed specifically because the Waynes were murdered there? Crime Alley where Leslie found her friend's little boy covered in their blood? Crime Alley where Batman was born and is sometimes noted to start his patrol from? Now that I think about it, was Jason ever based in Crime Alley as Red Hood? Do we know the location of his safehouses? Because he's been sort of all over the place, following Dick to New York, travelling with the Outlaws, and recently settling (at least for a while, I have no Idea where he is now lol) in the Hill.

Fanon usually portrays him as so strictly bound to Gotham (specifically Park Row of course) but now I wonder how much time post UTRH he actually spent in Gotham lmao
