Guysss I Found Stargate Atlantis Books!!!

So, for those not in the know, SGA is pretty much my favorite genre show. Friends might be my all-time favorite show, but SGA comes so so close as well, and is a comfort show for me as well.

I was so upset when it got cancelled, and am now rewatching the show with my boyfriend. And now I get to delve into it even more! With reading more adventures of my favorite sci-fi crew!

Anyone else fans? What do you think of the books?

LIVE A LITTLE LOVE A LITTLE Movie Review

Ok I know I haven’t written a review for an Elvis Presley film in awhile. The truth is, I’ve been watching them, but felt too stressed to keep writing reviews with everything else going on in my life. But I feel like I have to write a review of this one.

First of all, it was a great, high-energy movie! The premise itself was a little uncomfortable, but Elvis was on the top of his game, and looked really good in this movie too.

“The Edge of Reality” and “A Little Less Conversation” were some of the best musical numbers I’ve ever seen in an Elvis film. And I’ve seen most of them so far. 

This is definitely one of my favorites now, and if I ever rewatch all the Elvis films, I’ll make sure to do a rewatch of this one, and really appreciate it. 

The love interest though? Crazy as hell! (But the push and pull between the two leads was a lot of fun to watch.)

But, yeah, this was a bright, fun film, and I loved it. I cannot wait to watch it again soon. 

Only 9 feature films left! (Not counting documentaries and concert films.) I’ll be done in a couple of months hopefully...

FUN IN ACAPULCO Film Review

Hey guys! Me again. I’m back.

Sorry I took so long to watch another Elvis Presley movie. Things were happening in my life and I needed to take a little break. So...I have Covid and can’t go into work so expect me to be watching a lot more this week and playing catch up. 

But onto the review:

I never did well in Spanish in school. Could never get the feel for the language. But I don’t think that matters when watching Fun in Acapulco.

I just thought this one was a fun, light, breezy movie and I enjoyed it for what it was. It had all the Elvis staples I’ve come to notice in his screen adventures: singing, fistfights and beautiful women, among other things, but that was part of the charm.

And the kid was so adorable! This movie got extra points for having an adorable kid in it to get the action moving and just be funny as hell. 

This was a good movie to watch while sick and it definitely brought a grin to my face. “Bossa Nova Baby” is still one good song.

All in all, another winner in my book, even if the plot was kind of flimsy. The locale totally made up for it though. 

And now I can’t get “Bossa Nova Baby” out of my head....

FRANKIE AND JOHNNY Film Review

Ok I did like Frankie and Johnny. It was unique and fun, and I liked a lot of the music. Still, though, it was annoying to see Johnny keep on making the same gambling mistakes and with Frankie.

I liked the New Orleans setting and the masquerade was especially fun. But this film was missing a lot of the heart of Elvis’ other films. Still, it was a lot of fun, though, and I’m glad I watched it. 

My boyfriend watched it with me and had a lot of funny commentary for the movie. So that made it fun, too. 

It was just a silly, light-hearted romp through New Orleans and Elvis was great as usual.

There isn’t really much else to write in this review. Was pretty good but wasn’t my favorite. The whole cast was fun and professional. And there was a lot of alcohol (impairment) in this one. A LOT OF ALCOHOL.

So, if you’re into that, I’m sure you’ll like this one.

I’m finding, even though I liked this one, that a lot of them are becoming same-y and having similar storylines. I still liked this one. It was more unique than others, but it didn’t have the gravitas of King Creole, or was as fun and funny as Jailhouse Rock and Blue Hawaii. And I’m finding Elvis made some better decisions in his acting career with later films like The Trouble with Girls and Change of Habit, although I’m still going through the films, so I can’t speak for all of them. 

Eighteenth of 31 films down! I’m almost at 20! 

I just hope the next film I watch is better.

Girls! Girls! Girls! Film Review

Ok so this was the second Elvis Presley film I watched with my boyfriend, and the seventeenth I’ve watched in all. The scenery was really pretty and the story was a lot of fun, but I wasn’t crazy about Girls! Girls! Girls!.

As always, Elvis was a lot of fun and had great comic timing. And the women in this film, Laurel and Robin, were a lot of fun and I liked both of them. The storyline was good too, in which Elvis’ character, Ross Carpenter, actually had some stakes and learned a lesson at the end. 

But the story was also pretty bare bones and felt like a lot of the other Elvis movies I’ve watched. I couldn’t really find anything different in this one, except that it took place at sea. 

There were some fun musical numbers, though, like “Return To Sender” and “Won’t Be Tied Down” (don’t know the name???). 

But I wasn’t crazy about this one. I didn’t laugh as hard as watching Blue Hawaii or The Trouble With Girls. And it felt kind of flimsy compared to his other film outings. 

It was a fun movie, but definitely not memorable. 

Up next: number eighteen! I have no idea what it’s going to be yet, because I have so much trouble deciding these things. (My boyfriend actually picked this one when I couldn’t decide for myself.)

CHANGE OF HABIT Film Review

Ok let’s get the first thing out of the way first: Elvis looked good in this one! He was at the top of his game in his last movie outing, Change of Habit, and he looked good doing it. I simply couldn’t stop staring at him the whole time. His acting and charm were on full display here, and I really loved his role as Dr. John Carpenter, even if this one wasn’t my favorite of the Elvis Presley films I’ve watched so far. 

This film also tackled a lot of heavy, serious subjects in a short amount of time: race relations, money problems, psychological issues, autism, religion and probably more I’m forgetting about. And that was both good and bad. Good, when the film did a good job, like with how it handled women and our struggles. Bad, with how it handled autism and our struggles, and how dated the film’s viewpoints on autism turned out to be. It tried, though, and although I didn’t like how it handled autism, I’ll give it points for trying its best and hardest. 

A little about me personally: I got diagnosed with autism and it’s been a hard journey for sure, and still is to this day, even though I got diagnosed a number of years ago. But I’m still sensitive to how it is portrayed in media, and well...this film messed up. I know, I know. It was 1969 and they knew next to nothing about autism, but it was still hard to watch how they handled it. This was one aspect of the movie I didn’t like and I’ll stand by that.

Let’s go back to the good, though: that song “Rubberneckin’” in the very beginning of the film was soo so good and catchy, and perfectly fit Elvis’ voice. Although his character wasn’t religious, I was glad to see Elvis singing some gospel-inspired songs in this one because he loved that type of music so much. The three main nuns were perfect in their roles, and all nearly stole the movie from Elvis himself, which is a hard feat. How the film handled race relations, monetary troubles and women struggles was on point and did a good job, and seemed more modern than the time it was in aka 1969. This movie had a lot of serious topics to tackle, and it was brave and didn’t shy away from them, and it mostly did a good job. Especially for a film that was released decades ago. 

And, Elvis! I always thought that he was really on top of his game for only his earlier films, but in Change of Habit and The Trouble with Girls, he was phenomenal. He really came a long way from Love Me Tender and Loving You. He was even slightly believable as a doctor in this one, which a lot of musician-actors couldn’t pull off.

I was mostly happy with this film and how it handled everything, and I’ll probably watch it again at some point, since I didn’t really take everything in being my first time watching this. 

And Elvis! So, so happy and proud of the job he did in this movie. And proud to call myself a fan. 16 of 31 films down, and only a handful more to go.

For those not in the know, I’m watching and reviewing all 31 Elvis Presley studio films that he starred in, plus some documentaries and concert specials. Ever since the Elvis (2022) biopic came out, I’ve been interested in watching the movies and seeing this side of Elvis Presley, which I had never seen before this year. 

If you want an Elvis movie that will make you sit down and think about the state of the world, I recommend Change of Habit. And enjoy “Rubbernbeckin’” too, because that is now one of my favorite Elvis songs from movies or anywhere.

THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS Film Review

Ok I really loved this one! What a great satire and it was so different from the other movies I have seen Elvis in so far. The Trouble with Girls is definitely one of my new favorite Elvis movies!

First of all, Marilyn Mason as Charlene was a wonder to behold. She acted her ass off in this one, and was just high-energy and so much fun to watch, and she acted well next to a more toned down Elvis. They were both hilarious together. 

Elvis seemed to be over acting in this one. Understandable, given his history with film. But that seemed to work for the part he played: Walter Hale, a conniving, money-driven fiend, as Charlene liked to call him.

This was just a high-energy satire that was fun to watch. And showed the range Elvis had as an actor that he never really got to show off. He played well off the entire cast, and although he took a backseat most scenes, I still couldn’t take my eyes off him.

He looked good in this one! With his white suit and cigar and side burns. For some reason, I always thought he lost his appeal in that area in the later movies, but he was definitely on top of his game looks-wise too. I guess he had just come off the comeback special and that helped too. (I know...shallow. But I had to point that out.)

The children were talented and adorable. And although the plot ricocheted a lot, it worked for this type of film. 

My only complaint is that I wish Elvis could have sang more in this film, but at the same time, I’m glad he did acting first and the songs took a backseat. I’m really proud as a fan of his work in this movie, and I will definitely be watching it again. 

All in all, this movie was a lot of fun, and the whole cast and crew really put their all into it. I’m glad I didn’t just stop at King Creole and am on this adventure watching through all the Elvis Presley movies. 

Now, this one, had so much going on and was such a joy to watch, that I’ll definitely be watching it again at some point. It was just so funny and so great!

SPEEDWAY Film Review

Ok I was surprised by how much I liked this one! Yes, it felt like a Viva Las Vegas retread, but I also liked that the ending wasn’t tied up in a cute little bow. Elvis’ character, Steve, actually lost in this one, in more ways than one, and that was kind of cool. And the bright colors were great! And it was fun! And the music was fantastic too!

“Let Yourself Go” was definitely my favorite number in this film, although I liked it more in the comeback special. But all the music was just a lot of fun and there weren’t really any duds in this one. That I can think of on first watch, anyway.

I also loved Steve’s friend in this one, and how he dug an even deeper hole for Steve as the film went on. The actor was hilarious also. Nancy Sinatra was pretty good too as the love interest, but I felt like I had already seen the likes of her in an Elvis movie before. 

Yes, this one is fluff, and has next to no depth, but it’s fun and after a long day of work, I was glad to watch this one. 

My fourteenth of 31 now! Speedway is definitely a hit for me for sure. 

And, Elvis, of course, had great comic timing as usual! And was great in this film as well.

DOUBLE TROUBLE Film Review

Ok, this was a strange Elvis Presley film in many ways. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it. It was funny and cute, and Elvis was hilarious in it, and had great comic timing. 

But, let’s get one thing straight: Elvis is such an American icon. Everything about him screams the US in the 50′s, 60′s and part of the 70′s. From his hairstyle to his southern accent to the music he sang and played. It just seemed so wrong the whole movie to see him abroad and with humor that was distinctly not American. He just seemed kind of lost in this film, and I bet that has to do with the fact that he never traveled abroad except for his stint in Germany in the army.

But, the good stuff first: Elvis looked and acted great as usual, as well as sang songs that were all great except for the “old Macdonald had a farm” part. The plot was fun. And Jill was a really fun love interest. 

The bad: I couldn’t get over the fact that Double Trouble felt wrong and everything felt a little off, because Elvis is such an American icon. The British humor felt off too, even though there were some good zingers. 

Elvis plays a playboy again, this time in love with a 17 year old. Because of his own marriage and marriage troubles, it felt a little too close to his life. Although, Jill, his love interest, was hilarious and fun to watch and almost stole the show a couple times. 

All in all, this film seemed like a strange experiment that they didn’t quite pull off. Placing Elvis abroad seems like a good idea on paper, but watching it, again, was just so off-putting for me. Eh, I don’t know. I’ll probably try watching it again at some point, but for now, I feel a little strange after that movie experience. 

Oh well. Fun movie, bright colors, hilarious zingers. It was a good movie overall. I’d just have to get used to it more. 

And now I’m gonna watch a favorite of mine, King Creole, again tonight because I need some serious, somber Elvis now.

IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD’S FAIR Film Review

I’ve got to stop building up some of these Elvis Presley movies in my mind. I was super excited for this one, It Happened at the World’s Fair, but sadly found it a little lacking. 

The movie was decent and fun, but it was also straightforward and didn’t have a lot of depth aka a fluff piece. Which isn’t bad in and of itself. I like fluff sometimes, but this one I just couldn’t really get into for some reason. Maybe I need to watch it again somewhere down the line and give it a second chance?

I was really excited for the scenery and romance, which were my favorite parts of the movie. I love Seattle, and seeing it in the 1960′s was a treat. The main romance was a lot of fun as well, and I was rooting for Elvis and his costar the whole time. 

Elvis, of course, was great! Funny and fun as usual. The soundtrack also had some good songs on it. I didn’t know “Cotton Candy Land” was from this film??

But, yeah, it was far from perfect. Mike Edwards’ (Elvis’ character) motivations kept changing, which made it hard to keep up. The side characters were good and fun, but they didn’t have enough screen time for me. And I found the movie a little slow,

I’m not saying it was all bad. It was fun and I enjoyed it, but yeah, this one wasn’t my favorite. I just couldn’t really connect to it that well. I’m sorry to anyone who says this is their favorite or one of their favorites, but I honestly don’t get it. Please explain to me why you feel this way if you do. I want to like this movie more, of course!

So, this is my twelfth of 31 movies! I’m more than 1/3 of the way through. I think that Flaming Star spoiled me last night, though, because I loved that one, and wasn’t ready for a movie with less depth tonight. Oh well. 

Up next: maybe Double Trouble?? I’m super interested in that one, but this time I’m not going to build it up in my head, so I don’t get disappointed in the long run.

FLAMING STAR Film Review

Ok this one was so so sad, but so so good too. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone, but it as definitely a sad film. 

I don’t normally like westerns, but I really liked this one. Elvis in a serious role, in a movie that said something that matters. The backdrop is a race war, with none of the main characters winning in the end.

There were very few songs in this one and I was okay with that. The songs took a backseat to showing Elvis’ acting prowess. And, man, did he do a good job!

Elvis Presley was definitely a great actor, but he got to show off this ability in so few roles, from what I read. This is only the eleventh film I’ve watched of his so far, but it’s definitely his best acted. He’s definitely grown as an actor at this time in history and it shows. (And he looked good too!)

And he isn’t the only one to do a great job: his costars did great too!

For me, this story never lagged and never let up, and I was drawn to it the whole time. I enjoyed almost every minute, and found it had a really great plot and great characters too.

Flaming Star is now one of my favorite Elvis movies! And I never thought I’d say that about a Western. 

If you’re an Elvis fan and you haven’t watched this yet, go watch it already! Elvis and this story may surprise you, like it did me.

All in all, I’m really enjoying this adventure. I know there are a few stinkers among Elvis films, but I’m sure I’ll still enjoy most of them for Elvis alone. Even my least favorites, or the ones I’m not looking forward to as much, still seem to be great films. 

I’ve also watched The Searcher which is a phenomenal documentary about Elvis as an artist, and I now have 3 more documentaries to watch and add to the list. 

And besides King Creole and Jailhouse Rock, I think The ‘68 Comeback Special might be my new favorite Elvis thing ever. Not only for “If I Can Dream,”  what has now become one of my all-time favorite Elvis songs, but for how spectacular and passionate the whole special is. 

Well, there you have it. Those are my stats so far. 

More to come....now that I’m pretty much 1/3 of the way through this adventure.

THE ‘68 COMEBACK SPECIAL Review

So, tonight I decided to take a small break from the studio films and watch The ‘68 Comeback Special for the second time. Although I liked it the first time, I loved it much more the second time around. The first time, I rented it on Amazon, and I was just waiting for the “If I Can Dream” sequence and wondering when it was going to show up. Now that I knew it was at the very end, I could enjoy the show a lot more. And I definitely did!

I just love everything about this performance and show! The sit down portion, the stand up portion, the musical interludes, the gospel number, the finale! It’s all done so well. And you can really tell how passionate Elvis Presley was about getting this just right. 

“Trouble” is one of my favorite songs ever by Elvis, and I loved seeing it in the special, and that it was the opening number and played again at the close. Although I still love the original King Creole version more. But it’s still performed with passion and fun, and I’m happy it was included. 

Also, I need to talk about Elvis’ singing voice in this special. It’s rough and deep, and I just love the way he sings the songs we all know and love. So rock n roll! Not as smooth as the recorded versions, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be. And I really like that spin!

The gospel number is also one of my favorites, although I’m not Christian in the slightest. Still, though, it’s so powerful and done so well, I can’t help but fall in love with it. And I love Elvis’ red outfit during it and how the colors just pop out at you while watching. 

Speaking of Elvis’ outfits, all of them were sharp and on point. The leather outfit is so iconic now, but literally everything he wore in this special looks amazing on him. My personal favorite outfit is the white suit at the end during “If I Can Dream.”

The “Guitar Man” production number is also something really special, full of energy and vibrant as hell. And Elvis looks damn good the whole time! I’d never heard “Guitar Man” before this special, but now it’s definitely become one of my favorite Elvis songs. 

“If I Can Dream,” though, is my favorite part of the special, even though it makes me sad when it ends. It’s just so powerful and well-done. I had watched it on Youtube a million times before I finally watched the special for the first time a few months ago, I didn’t know for the longest time it was tied to this special, but it’s the perfect show closer, and really showcases Elvis’ talent as a singer and showman. 

But, oh man, the passion in this special is really something else! And I’m in love with it. 

So, usually when I want to watch a musical performance, I put on MTV Unplugged in New York by Nirvana. It’s one of my favorite performances and it’s a go to when I want to watch something music related that I own. I own a few concert DVDs but this one is a favorite of mine. 

I think I might have to add The ‘68 Comeback Special in the mix for favorite concerts I own now. It’s just so powerful and fun, and Elvis is so endearing in it. 

Now that it’s over, I already want to watch it again.

LOVE ME TENDER Film Review

I’m really sorry guys, but I wasn’t crazy about this one. I think this is the first Elvis film I watched that I don’t really have a desire to watch again. I probably will watch it again at some point, but it isn’t at the top of my list. 

It wasn’t a bad movie. I liked it for the most part. I just don’t really like westerns or war movies, and I think that’s why I struggled with it. 

Elvis was great in it as usual! His songs “Love Me Tender” and “Poor Boy” were beautifully performed. And the ending was heartbreaking. And probably my favorite part. The last act was just the best of the film for sure. 

I don’t want to give away spoilers, but bring tissues when you watch the ending. I came close to crying myself. 

The rest of the film, though, was kind of slow and meandering, and Elvis was kind of sidelined by his costars, this being his first movie role. His acting was kind of rough around the edges, but I didn’t mind that. I found it endearing.

Honestly, though, I loved the ending and the chase and the whole final act. It made up for the rest of the movie, and how I wasn’t really feeling it. And I would watch it again just for the ending and the buildup to that.

Also, the two Reno brothers (Elvis’ Clint and the other actor’s Vince) had an interesting relationship, both loving the same woman, and it was cool to see them work through those feelings. Clint’s anger at the end was acted really well by Elvis, and I found it totally believable, even though he was happy-go-lucky for the beginning of the film. 

All in all, a pretty good movie. Not at the top of my Elvis movie list so far, but not at the bottom, either. I guess I’m just kind of in-between about the whole movie, except for the ending. 

Oh well...

And I just received the 68 Comeback Special in the mail today, so I’m going to watch that after dinner and review it! What a great Elvis night! I watched it once before but never reviewed it, so excited to do so.

LOVING YOU Film Review

Oh my god I loved this one!!! Maybe because it was a thinly veiled Elvis biography. Maybe because the songs were all fantastic. Maybe because the plot was a lot of fun to watch. Or maybe because Elvis (and his hair) looked so damn good in this one. Whatever the reason, Loving You has become one of my favorite Elvis films. 

The zingers were great! At first, Glenda was annoying, but then she ended up becoming a really great antagonist to Elvis’ Deke Rivers. Elvis was definitely at the top of his game here. And the movie wasn’t bubblegum pop like his others, but has some depth to it, and is still a lot of fun as well. 

Deke was such a sweetie too! I was rooting for him the entire time, although the way his character spoke about loneliness and the pitfalls of fame made me a little uncomfortable because of Elvis’ own hurtles with those. 

I’d say the only scene that didn’t really belong was the graveyard scene. I get why it was in the movie, but it was too dark for this mostly positive movie and really stood out to me (kind of in a bad way.) All in all, it was very jarring, although the rest of the movie went smoothly. 

Glenda and Deke’s relationship was also fun to watch progress, and their see-sawing of trust and love was really interesting as well. 

The outfits were also on point, and Elvis looked good in all of them! I have a feeling this film is a favorite among fans for the eye candy alone. But it’s definitely got a fun plot and great songs as well going for it. 

“Mean Woman Blues” and “Gotta Lotta Living to Do” have definitely become some favorites of Elvis songs from his movies now. This one I can’t wait to watch again. :DDDDD

Up next: Love Me Tender, which I heard is going to make me cry. :((((( But I’m ready for it. 

For those not in the know, I’m watching and reviewing all 31 Elvis movies that he starred in. You can check out my blog for past reviews if you want. As well as the 2022 biopic, and I may have to watch The Searcher again to give it a good review. I’ll also be watching some documentaries of his to review when I finish his studio films, as I have 3 more of them as well.
