the whole ‘is this payback for making you go on the cyclone and you throwing up?’ conversation is so funny to me bc the howlies really were just standing around while captain america and sergeant barnes flirt to pass time is obviously a regular occurence. it just makes u think how annoying (affectionate) they'd be to live with on the front for months on end. even ignoring the weird romantic tension, they've known each other since they were six -- between the inside jokes, old married couple arguments, constant fussing, and one million shared memories.......good lord do they not teach you in brooklyn how to SHUT UP? His suit needs to be washed, he leans against the washer with bruises all over his body, life fucks him up in every single stage but he never gives up, and that's why Spider-Man will forever be the greatest superhero to ever exist.

Okay, I can’t find a good gif to illustrate it, but in Superman: The Animated Series there’s commonly a point when Superman is having to lift something that he struggles and almost fails, only to overcome it and hold up/stop/crush whatever it is. From a Doyleist perspective, it’s to make the viewer nervous— will Superman be able to hold up this train full of people, or will he fail this time?? 😱

Which works in the heat of the moment, but does lead to points where it seems silly, because sometimes he’s “struggling” with a weight we have seen him handle in previous episodes. And in Superman mythology in general, his strength is nigh infinite. (In looking for an example, I found one where Superman straight up takes over for the mythological Atlas in holding up the Heavens for a bit. The answer to “is he strong enough to hold up X?” is always yes, no matter how ridiculous X is.)

For a Watsonian explanation, I’ve been playing with the idea that what we’re seeing in those moments isn’t a struggle of strength — it’s Superman power balancing. When Superman is doing things like holding up rail over a broken piece of track to let a train roll over, or trying to stop a trap meant to crush him, it’s not a question of if he has the power to do it. It’s can he apply just the *right* amount of pressure to do the necessary job?

Superman always starts off slightly under where he thinks he needs to be and builds up, which is where we see him “struggle”. Because if he puts too *much* power into an action, he can cause far more damage than the original threat.

This is like…legitimately one of the saddest scans. Not in terms of like…emotional torment or whatever, but what it represents.

Bruce is lying about what he thinks of when the words come to mind. You’ll notice that all of the ones that DO come to mind pertain to Batman, pertain to his hunt for justice. He’s playing the slightly dumb playboy that doesn’t have a care in the world, and yet he has the world on his shoulders.

His idea of play? Going out and beating up bad guys. The first thing he thinks of when ‘friend’ comes up is Harvey, one of his greatest failures. His friend who went so horribly wrong.

And the final word…'happiness.’ He thinks of his childhood, when he was innocent. He thinks of himself with his parents, before they were ripped away from him, before he started out on his crusade for justice.

Bruce is an incredibly lonely man. He has maybe about ten people (if even that) of people who truly understand him, who GET him. He has his family, sure, but the Bat!family can only go so far. His whole life, he’s been dedicated to his pursual of justice, and he can’t walk away from that. He’s forced to play dumb for everyone except the privileged few, and even those privileged few don’t understand him completely. When you get down to it, really the list of people that Bruce can absolutely and positively trust falls down to two: Alfred and Dick.

What Bruce says in the end for happiness isn’t family. It isn’t love, or a person, or a book, or anything that could make sense for a normal person, because Bruce isn’t a normal person, by any definition. What he SAYS is ‘Gotham.’ His city; the one he’s fought and clawed and lived and died for, the city he’s cried and prayed and bled for, the one he protects with his life each and every night of his life.

Bruce’s definition of happiness is The Batman and protecting Gotham, and I think that alone tells us a lot about his mind, and about him.
