I don’t know what I need
catharsis
(i had a bad day bc last night my insta and fb accounts were randomly flagged and disabled, and the appeal protocol is literally just me giving them more personal data (phone number, email, and a video selfie) and it felt so violating and stressful, bc if it didn't work, i'd have been permanently locked out.)
these scenes in the PHM movie are heart-wrenching, and rylan gosling did a fantastic job)
text is from the book
But the kazachok, he danced really wunderbar!
(I think they would've loaded a ton of stuff onto the Hail Mary for the astronauts to keep stimulated/keep in shape, and I think Just Dance 2 was one of them)
dr. grace (so very intrigued by the fox symbolism they ascribe to him in this movie through his keychain, his cardigan, and that funny little mask he finds in the Hail Mary)
au where the amnesia doesn't stick and Grace still does his little video logs but he's MAD
ive been thinking about grace and eridian formalwear.... idk how to design clothes/outfits at all so this is me throwing random stuff at the wall
your honour I can't stop thinking about Them™
One of the things that they didn't get into in the movie Project Hail Mary but was so emotionally poignant for me in the book is that it really was a last and only hope, and they partially destroyed Earth just to send the spaceship off.
The breeding of the astrophage to make fuel for the spaceship took so much energy that Eva Stratt paved over half of the Sahara desert, causing the weather to change in Africa and Europe. She blew up Antarctica to speed up global warming so they wouldn't die of cold before the probes could return. Stratt is playing supervillain with the Earth in the hopes that at least half of humanity would survive. After sending the three astronauts to certain death, her job is to keep humanity together for long enough to save the sun.
I think it adds a lot to her decision to send Grace away. Yes, it was cruel, but she knows what is coming for her and perhaps many of the people on the Hail Mary project. She is going to hold Earth and humanity together for decades, as people blame her for destruction and as nations in all likelihood go to war over scarce resources. Then, even if they succeed, she will probably be vilified or even executed for what she did.
Stratt is standing in the wreckage of Earth, knowing she'll live and die in infamy. She sent Grace off knowing that if he succeeded, he'd be remembered forever as a hero. She tore the Earth apart so he could save it.
Edit to add a quote:
☆tiger☆
The thing that hurts me the most in the book is that Ryland was kept conscious for MULTIPLE DAYS in a jail cell leading up to the launch but they still didn't pack him anything personal. Stratt could've called someone and had them pack a bag in an hour. They could've ferried him back to the states secretly to pack his own bag while under surveillance. But no, they kept him awake and aware that they were sentencing him to death and didn't even let him have any of his personal belongings.
For all that we joke about the action itself, the phm Antarctica scene guts me every single time. Never has an apocalyptic scenario been made to feel so threatening and real by the sheer measures humanity takes to save itself. It's the dead of night, bitter cold air and two people with unfathomable power, someone is crying, it's not enough, the shockwave reaches us in ten minutes. I'll be in the cell next to you.
Y'all think that Grace and Rocky get mad separation anxiety when they aren't together on Erid? Like, you spend years in a small space, living practically on top of each other, and y'all drive each other crazy because any two people living in such close quarters would, but you also get to know each other in a way that's so personal and you love each other so much so honestly you wouldn't have it any other way. You've almost lost each other too many times and you've seen each other suffer and you've fought tooth and nail to stay together and those things have gotta leave a mark, right?
They get to Erid and they finally have a chance to get some much needed space from each other, but they realize very quickly that they Don’t Want That. It’s scary to leave your favorite leaky space blob alone because he’s so soft and fragile and he has zero self preservation instincts and you feel this need to be with him at all times to fix something if it goes wrong. And it’s scary to watch your best friend walk away from your dome and disappear into the darkness of his planet cause the last time you two parted ways he came dangerously close to dying a slow and painful death. But Rocky can't be with Grace in his dome 24/7 and it's not exactly easy for Grace to follow Rocky around outside, so I feel like there’d be a big struggle with that, at least at first.
Grace sleeps too often for Rocky to be there to watch every time, and that Stresses Rocky Out. And Grace, far too often, wakes up from nightmares and has to remind himself through shaking breaths and a heaving chest that Rocky not being there doesn’t mean something bad happened. Grace can’t help but be filled with disproportionate relief when Rocky comes to visit, and vice versa. They spend as much time together as possible, and it’s a balancing act for Rocky, dividing his time between Grace and Adrian.
I think they’d have to learn how to be apart, learn to be able to let the other out of their sight and to trust that they’re okay.
i know rocky still technically got to play with the measuring tape in the movie but the way it happened in the book always makes me smile when I read it. :]

I haven’t seen this comparison made yet—we talk about Ryland walking toward himself on the beach as a type of foreshadowing—BUT LOOK the figure Rocky makes of Grace in the beginning of the movie is the EXACT POSE Grace makes when he comes back to save Rocky in the end and is banging on the glass!!!!
guys I love this movie you don’t understand.
