lately i've been seeing white japanese fashion influencers sharing photos and videos from the toyoko kids again (this had also happened a few years ago).

it is a community of primarily runaway teens who hang out mainly in the kabukicho red light district (that alone should already be a sign that something seriously fucked up is going on), they tend to get drunk, high, and have sex with predators for money. from what i personally have witnessed members seem to mostly be middle-high school aged, but some people i've met have also seen primary-school aged kids in the group. the kids involved were groomed into it by both adults and older members. there have also been multiple suicides and homicides linked to them.

there was a specific case a few years ago where a man posing as someone helping them had really been molesting them and manipulating them into committing violent crimes.

this is not some cutesy jirai-kei hangout shit, this is a csa ring that targets mentally ill kids and everyone sharing photos and vids from as "aesthetic" are only enabling real-life child abuse. i hope that you all burn.

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

i admit i am getting wary whenever people vaguepost about a fandom being 'full of drama' because a lot of people seem to use 'drama' as a synonym for like. discussions of bigotry and bias in media. which is so very much not the same thing and it hurts my head to see it conflated with shipping wars and headcanon discourse.

never let anyone convince you that theyre a bigger fan of something because they have more money btw. Like just because someone has a huge collection of merch or something does not make them more dedicated or anything like that. you do not need to feel ashamed if you don't have a big collection to brag about, or if you dont have a cool shrine of a character like other people do or something like that. Philippinophobia is and was when I as a child never saw any Filipinos represented around me. I thought I was "rare," people around me didn't know what a Filipino even was. I was ignored when we discussed world languages in class and I brought up Tagalog; the teacher simply remained quiet. It felt like always having to bring up that part of my race as a mixed person for any acknowledgement of it ever.

I've went through the same things when I was younger. I thought filipinos were rare or unknown because I never saw them in discussions about asian countries and I didn't see any Filipino representation in non-Filipino shows growing up. I didn't even know Filipinos were asians up until i was 12 years old

Filipinos deserve more respect and representation, we shouldn't have to give others a reminder that we do exist and we are part of Asia.
