i've been feeling very frustrated by the discourse surrounding francesca's story line. like, obviously i'm exhausted by the homophobia aspects, but i'm also tired of seeing people say that people reading into the parts of the text that point to her being a lesbian diminishes her relationship with john.

because francesca ADORED that man. i don't think that she's the sort of lesbian who's repulsed by men or the idea of being with them, it's just that just that john's physical form doesn't... do much for her.

he's still her favorite person in the entire world and if i'm right that she's not physically attracted to him or "in love" with him, then i think it's source of shame and self-hatred, part of the reason that she feels like a bad wife.

if francesca IS a lesbian, she cannot "fix" that about herself, no matter how much she would very clearly want to. she would hate that she didn't love her "truest friend" in the way that society said she should have, which might have been the way that HE loved her.

but i think even if john loved her that way and knew those aspects weren't reciprocated, he would understand. he doesn't seem like the kind of man who needed love to be exactly the same on both ends. he might feel guilty that SHE isn't able to have that sort of feelings towards him and therefore doesn't get to explore that part of herself, but he wouldn't hate her for it or feel inadequate. they might never be able to articulate it or work all the way through it, but it would be a stable, healthy and beautiful partnership that would probably be classed as some level of QPR.

with how much of an absolutely frazzled, delighted mess francesca becomes around michaela (more in line with how the other romances come across) vs the calm, quiet and sturdy love between her and john... it's just different. it is NOT worse, but it is different. personally, i think that acknowledging those aspects of the text and engaging with them doesn't lessen any of it.

I love, love, loved the project hail mary movie and everyone said to check out the book. so i did. and am i crazy or is this book terribly written?? Like, the prose is so juvenile and if it weren't for the random scientific info dumps I would think it was a middle-grade novel. idk I'm just shocked at how critically acclaimed this book is. I'm so glad I watched the movie first because that film was cinema

waking up and realising *some* (not all obvs) straight women have created yet another reason to hate on franchaela. theyre honestly so creative. i remember when aloto 2022 came out the straight men would just dunk on the show, calling it "woke trash" and filled with "ugly dykes". but these new franchaela haters are a lot better at disguising their homophobia. u gotta give them credit tbh

genuinely so fucking bleak what a self-fulfilling prophecy “lesbians aren’t marketable” is. people refuse to put resources into creating lesbian books/tv/movies/etc & so there’s nothing there & of course there’s no audience & then companies point to that & say well there’s just no audience so we can’t put resources into this. & truly god bless the success heated rivalry etc is having right now but it is so fucking stark walking into a bookstore or opening a streaming site & going to the lgbt/queer/etc section and seeing just 95% stories exclusively about gay men. & all these companies are waving pride flags going yassss we want more queer stories!! & then turn around & go oh….you thought we meant lesbians? no….obviously this only applies to gay men. there’s only a market for gay men. & then all these magazines are publishing thinkpieces about how it’s so weird that women are into gay men but actually there’s a really elevated reason that goes beyond just gross perverse sexuality (bc obviously women can’t just enjoy stories about men fucking each other, there HAS to be something to explain there) & the special reason stories about gay men are so popular is that they’re a special kind of relationship where there’s no power imbalance and no misogyny. because yes!!! the best way to get rid of misogyny in romance is to remove all the women!!!! & idk maybe i’m just getting extra irritated bc i watched 2 different things today which both featured multiple straight sex scenes & then towards the end have two women kiss each other only to then immediately pull away from that & either die shortly after or return to a husband/boyfriend who is their True Real Love. & it’s all just like back to back to back lesbians are titillating set dressing or background characters in gay romance or dead & they all have to be skinny and conventionally attractive and extremely feminine and they’ll kiss on screen but that’s it because women just don’t fuck unlike men. i am definitely generalizing & overstating but whatever i just needed to rant. if i see one more person expounding on how gay romance is just sooooo special & non-patriarchal & that’s why its so uniquely good i’m going to start killing people

when i say I don't want eloise to get married ppl assume I don't want her to experience love or romance. which could not be further from the truth. I love her and theo. I love her and cressida. I love the idea of her being a spinster and having sweeping, romantic passionate love affairs.

I just think 1) she's anti marriage because women were legally classified as their husband's property and were not allowed to do anything outside being a wife and a mother (which the married women who do enjoy being married even agree with! because that was the reality back then!) and 2) romance is is like, a no. 4 priority for her. like going to university, travelling the world, campaigning for women's rights - those come first and is it wrong for me to want the writers to prioritise those goals? again, not saying she also shouldn't want romance but i think that the romance should accompany her travels, her studies, her campaigning, not her desires being sidelined for romance/marriage.
