Peeta when he was 5
suzanne collins is such a genius... the cultural phenomena of her series leading to the hanging tree house remixes, mockingjay being milked for two (bad) movies, the capitol-inspired makeup palettes, the halloween costumes, the explosion of the market for dystopia, the butchering of her characters and removal of disabilities, disfiguration, and racial tension + representation to sell more tickets, the extra gale scenes to fuel discourse, and the audience showing up to cinemas to watch what was pretty honestly marketed to them (the jacob vs edwardification of the symbolic love story and also to watch children fight to the death) it's just so ridiculously ironic i would say you can't write this shit, but she did write about it... in The Hunger Games published 2008
Katniss in the first book is so funny because beyond her being absolutely wrong in nearly every assumption she has of Peeta. Every other chapter she’s like “two can play that game” about him being deceptive and then she utterly fails at it.
I think a lot of hunger games takes that revolve around "the movies are exactly what the books were warning us against" or "people picking a side of the love triangle are ignoring the point of the books" just vastly underestimate the message. like the point goes so far beyond "oh the capitol people are bad for watching the games for entertainment"
sure but the movies did a very bad job at portraying the stakes the books create
does anyone else remember that short film on youtube about finnick and annie before the books when they had their games and basically how they kept their relationship despite their trauma and finnick would sit on the beach weaving a fishnet and he taught her to swim and at the end after being traumatised she finally said his name tell me i didnt dream this
I love "The Hunger Game" films, but I think that Katniss, Peeta, and Gale should've been cast with more age appropriate actors. Their actors did amazing jobs, but they were supposed to be these emaciated, skinny teenagers that look even younger than they actually were, not buff adults. That was the whole point of the books.
I would like to clarify this is no slander towards any of the actors. This is just my statement.
Gale did not kill Prim. He didn’t order the bomb strike and he didn’t drop the bombs.
He did however create a bomb (with Beetee) that was deigned to pray on human kindness and target medical personal since it was rigged to blow again after help for the first explosion arrived.
At some point, Gale and Beetee left the wilderness behind and focused on more human impulses. Like compassion. A bomb explodes. Time is allowed for people to rush to the aid of the wounded. Then a second, more powerful bomb kills them as well. - Mockingjay page 177
The fact that his bombs killed Prim is very important to the story, but not as a way to resolve the love triangle (bc Katniss would have chosen Peeta, bombs or no bombs but that’s for a different analysis).
“Beetee and I have been following the same rule book President Snow used when he hijacked Peeta.” says Gale. - Mockingjay page 177
Gale making the bombs that killed Prim is important because it shows the horrors of war. It demonstrates how when you stoop to the level of cruelty and atrocities as your opponent, you hurt everyone around you, especially the people you are trying to protect.
Gale didn’t mean for his bombs to kill Prim, but that doesn’t matter in the end, because his bombs were designed to target compassion and Prim was the embodiment of compassion.
Gale didn’t mean for his bombs to murder innocent children but that doesn’t matter because he was willing to do anything to win the war and the includes the mass murder of children.
It’s important that Gale’s bombs killed Prim because it shows that there are consequences to praying on human kindness.
It shows that the innocent pay the price of war. Katniss is going to have to live with the knowledge that her best friend created the bombs that killed her sister, and yes he never meant to hurt Prim but that’s war. Gale is going to have to live with the guilt and the knowledge that his need to win the war at all costs lead to the death of the little girl he had promised protect. Gale has to live with the fact that he played a hand in taking away the person Katniss loved the most, and he has to live with the fact that it cost him his best friend forever.
Gale was just a kid, like Katniss and he chose to create something that would actively target compassion, not really thinking about the consequences it might have because all he wanted was to destroy the Capitol. And in the end, it he’s going to be living with that guilt and those consequences for the rest of his life.
Katniss doesn’t cut off Gale because she’s not in love with him or whatever. Katniss can’t be around him at the end because she’s unable to ignore or tolerate the things Gale was willing to and justify do to win the war and how that lead to the death of her sister. Katniss and Gale reacted very differently to the war and their different perspectives and approaches were always going to get in-between anything they ever had (friendship or relationship).
There is no winning a war without getting blood on your hands and Suzanne Collins showed it perfectly when she had wrote the arc with Gale, Prim and the bombs.
Gale is not a villain, war isn’t black and white. He was young and trying to win a war but his actions have consequences and one of those consequences was Prim’s death.
Gale didn’t kill Prim and that makes it all the more tragic that he played such a big role in her death.
suzanne collins fucking produced a masterpiece. i'm reading hunger games for the millionth time and EVERY TIME i fall more in love with it.
i'm kicking my feet over the fact that katniss already had a little crush on peeta before the hunger games started and she didn't even realise it. like — during the parade, she holds onto him because he's so strong and solid as rock and then he smiles at her and tells her fire suits her and she has to stop herself from getting butterflies!!!!! i fucking love them. katniss is one of the best written characters EVER and i am FOREVER a simp for peeta mellark.
i could talk about hunger games for HOURS. favourite "he fell first but she fell harder" trope. gale can choke
have a good day everyone:)
“I’m so tired” continues to be one of the most relatable quotes from peeta mellark
Loved your "Spinning out" rant! I wasn't live blogging while watching it, but I had similar thoughts to yours! I also tried to figure out if the screenwriter is in the THG fandom, but no luck on that front on my part...
Hi @littleevilisa , I couldn’t stop watching the show yesterday so I binged it in one day... and today I’ve done a rewatch of Kat/Justin scenes.
There’s no way the person isn’t familiar with the Everlark fandom. The show ticks all THG/Everlark points and moreover some of our headcanons for Modern AU.
Like the “real not real” scene between Jen and Kat (I know it’s not with Peeta/Justin , but the concept is the same) or like Justin bringing her to the frozen pond to skate, where he went with her mom and never brought anyone before (even if on the books is Katniss.. it’s again the same element). Kat being quite and her scowl, Justin saying “wow you’re smiling” , when they made up the story about Justin foraging berries and Kat saving him from a bear (c’mon it’s super obvious!!). Romeo and Juliet music for their long program (when we all know the nightlock stunt from the first hunger games was exactly a remembrance of Romeo&Juliet, star crossed lovers and all that...), and to make it more obvious we have the “tribute” reference /joke . And Kat’s surname is “Kat Baker”... Baker, seriously? 😂
To be honest this show was MY DREAM come true. It was like watching an AMAZING Everlark fiction.
They are my new headcanon when I picture for myself any Peeta/Katniss modern fan fiction... I think I’m going to change some of my banners even! I loved their performances so much! They were perfect!!
I know everyone says it sucks there’s no season 2, but I’m supper happy with this ending (and sometimes extending a show means things get messy because they need to keep the drama and tension). With this ending, They are together, they love each other and are happy. they are going to win (Kat feels safe with him, he says to his dad they don’t need luck).
We know they have a happy ending (God bless Suzanne Collins). We know they are going to marry and have 2 cute kids.
My asks are open to keep speaking about THG/SPINNING OUT parallels. We’re thinking on a rewatch with @mandelion82 @mrspeetamellark and more people, if you want to join , it will be fun !!
And bonus.. we got the sex scenes we never got in the movie 😍
What to Read This Week > WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING
For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Is there any interest in doing a fic adoption event?
I feel like I remember there being one a long time ago and I know that people have just done it individually. I've noticed since the beginning of the year that there seem to be quite a few fics that people won't be continuing and I'm wondering if maybe others would be interested in picking them up. If there's enough interest then I will host it.

I rarely read anything non-Everlark but this sweet n spicy one shot has stuck with me. It’s a unique take on Madge compared to most characterizations of her and feels much more in line with the glimpse we do have of her character in the book. When I read @everlarkedalways prompts for week 1 of Toasted I knew instantly I wanted to share this fic and that I wanted to make this banner as a gift for @sohypothetically. All of her stories are wonderful! Check out her FFN account for some that aren’t AO3, she has a cool Paylor/Aurelius post MJ story.
I’m hijacking this post that my friend @lovely-tothe-bone created for the modern a/u Gadge fic
Laundry by @sohypothetically
Here’s the summary: Present Day A/U: Madge Undersee lives a quiet life. But can a chance meeting in a Laundromat change all that? Rated M for language and mature situations. Gadge.
Even if you’re not typically into non-Everlark pairings you need to read this- it’s too good to pass up. I adore this characterization of Gale and Madge- they feel very in-character for a modern a/u.
rereading the hunger games and i CANNOT stop thinking about what haymitch and peeta’s individual interview training session must’ve gone. like
haymitch: so what’s your angle you wanna go for how do we want to portray you
peeta: I Have Been In Love With Katniss For 12 Years
haymitch: oh word?
happy father’s day to peeta mellark, my favorite fictional baby daddy. I pray he woke up to breakfast in bed that his kids made him, sloppy little squares of bread with jam and a glass of milk that splashed everywhere because katniss wasn’t awake yet to help them but to peeta it’s the best thing he’s eaten all year
Happy Father's day to random fictional middle aged men who are better parental figures than my actual father lol
