I should absolutely be working on other writing projects, but these are fast and I find this pairing fun to write.
(Name) Cookie glances out the living room window with a grimace. Vibrant, peaceful sunlight shines in, giving the illusion of a normal day.
But today has been too quiet—too peaceful. They don’t trust it; their days are never this peaceful.
Come to think of it, they aren’t sure they’ve seen their lover today…
Setting aside the book they were too distracted to read, they cross the room and knock on his door. “Sage?”
There’s a noise from inside, which never happens when he’s not there. Why’s he been in here all day?
Pushing open the door, they find him miserably sprawled across his bed. “Sage?”
He lifts his head, turning it to look at them. “(Name) Cookie?” He sniffles, another thing that (almost) never happens.
“Are you ok?” They turn on the lights as they go to his bedside, terrified of what might be wrong.
The Sage of Truth sniffles again, wiping his eyes before pulling off his broach. “Here. Take my Soul Jam and leave me here to crumble.”
“…” (Name) Cookie wordlessly shoves the blue stone back towards him. “Are you SICK?!”
This was a conversation that had come up before. ‘I don’t get sick!’ He always told them. Every time they doubted it, he always assured them his Soul Jam prevented it. Yet here he is, sprawled out and miserable in bed, sniffling and crying because he doesn’t feel well.
He rolls over, curling in on himself. Instead of answering, he whimpers in pain.
“Sage!” They can’t really judge; if they’d never been sick before, they’d think they’re dying too. “What on Earthbread got YOU sick?”
“The milk in the fridge is expired.” He weakly mutters.
“AND YOU DRANK IT?!” They swear this idiot—!
“How else would I know?” He turns back to them.
“How much did you drink???” They raise their hands in alarm.
“I stopped feeling sick that way hours ago.” The Sage brushes this off. “Everything else hurts now.”
They cross their arms. “So… it’s not ‘I can’t get sick’, but ‘I don’t get sick until one bad decision forces me to make up for a millennia of never being sick.’”
“You don’t have to rub it in.” He mumbles, turning away again.
“I’m gonna go grab some things. I’ll be right back.”
A few minutes later, (Name) Cookie is sitting on the Sage’s bed with him, wearing a face mask to (hopefully) keep them from getting whatever he has, and finally reading their book.
He’s resting next to them, arms wrapped around them. How in the world he finds sleeping in that hat comfortable, they’ll never know.
This is much better. It’s exactly the right amount of peace for a day to have.
…They’re never gonna let him live this down.
