Hey, I'm Carly! I'm a college student going into aerospace engineering. This is a blog for study help, motivation, and other school-related things, with an emphasis on STEM subjects. I've found that there aren't many resources for "harder" science/math/etc subjects on most studyblrs, so I made this to help out all of you guys. you guys were probably wondering why i haven’t been around well this is partially why

that feel when you’re literally fucking terrified of your future after graduation and no one can stop talking about how ~exciting~ it all is and you literally don’t know what you want anymore because your head is fucked and you’re scared and you have practically no one to talk to especially not your parents because they’ll just ask what happened to their kid when you know full well what happened and no it can’t be fixed by just “thinking positively”

can someone please explain the pros and cons of doing a double major??

i’m starting uni/college next year and i’m interested in doing a double major under bachelor of science but most of the people i know only do a single major in uni. so i’d appreciate love it if anyone can give me some advice :) :)

I’m a chemistry and physics double major, so I’m in a slightly different situation than most because I started my physics major during my junior year of chemistry. So I’d like to offer my slightly different perspective. I’m writing it as it applies to my majors specifically, but you can broaden those ideas to other double major combinations, as well.

Pros:

I took physical chemistry and modern physics at the same time, so I got to see similar material from two different perspectives, which gave me a better understanding of it overall. I expect this to happen next semester with Instrumental Analysis and Advanced Physics Lab (where we learn the details of NMR in both courses). Those are great semesters!

When chemistry-related concepts are mentioned in physics classes, I actually understand the importance/meaning of it because I’ve almost completed the degree rather than just taking gen chem (and vice versa).

Since chemistry and physics can apply to many other fields, I feel like I have a simultaneously deeper and broader understanding of the world than I would if I only had one major.

There are certain fields—such as nuclear physics—where someone with a background in both chemistry AND physics is extremely valuable (i.e., there are types of jobs that only someone with that specific background can fill adequately).

On a similar note, you more than double your possible career choices! Because not only can you choose from jobs that apply to each degree individually, but you can also find unique jobs that require both!

Because I have been trained to think in both perspectives, I think of really interesting and thought-provoking types of questions. Sure, it impresses professors, but more importantly, it makes me a unique type of thinker in my fields (i.e., I’m not hard-set into the mindset of one specific field).

I get to enjoy the jokes about the rifts between chemistry and physics from both sides!

If you decide to drop one of your majors, you’ll still get a degree! And that extra experience you have is still valuable (after all, it’s still on your transcript even if it’s not a full, separate degree)!

Cons:

It’s hard. Be prepared to work your ass off.

Starting “too late” gives you a guilt to finish both, even if you only want to finish one of your degrees (I added my physics major because I wanted to ditch chemistry, but DAMN I’m so close to a chemistry degree that I “might as well”—and your advisors WILL push you to “just finish it”, even the super nice ones).

If you don’t really love both of your majors, you will hate yourself for spending time on classes that “don’t matter”.

Occasionally, chemistry and physics have opposite conventions for certain things (such as in thermodynamics). It can be confusing to keep track of them.

If one of your majors comes more naturally to you, or you’re doing better in the “harder” major, you might underestimate it or think you’re “above it”. Which is a BAD mindset to have. DO NOT DO THIS. Both majors are valuable, difficult, and worth your effort and attention in different ways. Try to remind yourself of why you started each major. That you love learning. Because sometimes your motivation does wane.

People have less sympathy for your busyness because, well, you decided to take on the workload! (So, don’t complain to single majors about it because they will not appreciate it.)

Sometimes my physics professors ask really simple chemistry-related questions to the class, obviously expecting me to answer. And sometimes I don’t know what they’re talking about because my chemistry knowledge is too deep to predict what they were hinting at (and vice versa). Not a big deal, but slightly embarrassing.

…And a bonus!

Misconceptions:

You can have a social life. I know that I have time to if I really wanted to (I’m just introverted). Other double majors do. Maybe not as grand a social life as single majors, but it can happen if that’s important to you.

It’s not impossible. Clearly, people do it enough. So can you, if you want. It is hard, and that shouldn’t be underscored, but you will survive.

You don’t have to be a “genius” to have a double major. You just have to have a curiosity and a work ethic. If you’re also a genius, that’s just a bonus. It’s not required.

Conversely, just because someone is a double major doesn’t mean they’re a genius. Don’t treat them special or fuel their ego. They don’t need it, and neither do you (i.e., there’s no reason to feel bad if you’re not a double major—don’t compare yourself to others).

Realistic Study Moods

the “i accomplished something” mood: you decided to be productive that day but at night you realise you haven’t accomplished a single thing from your to-do-list. stressed you get yourself a cup off coffee and sit next to your desk really unmotivated and exhausted. half an hour later you’ve solved one math problem. you smile, you have done something.

the “i’m so fucking motivated” mood: early morning. you get out of bed right after the alarm goes off. well-rested you brew yourself a cup of tea.you write your to-do-list. after that you take a seat in your bed and start reading trough the textbook of your fave subject. “i’ll succeed today” you think and take a sip of your tea.

the “oh i’m so gonna prove you wrong” mood: “you can’t do it”, they say. determined you start working early. you read, you write notes, you revise, you discuss, you watch videos. on the test day you walk in with confident, take your test & fully ace it. proudly you turn your back to those bastards.

the “why do i not understand this” mood: papers scattered everywhere, several coffee mugs on your desk. you’ve been doing that same problem the whole day and still can’t solve it. you’ve looked trough the theory, asked your friends & even your teacher. frustrated you pick up your phone and hope someone else has asked the same question on google.

the “omg i get it” mood: you’ve been reading the same theory over and over again, you’ve watched several videos on the topic and googled everything about it. still, you can’t get the hang of it. frustrated you put your book down. later that day you pick up it again and start reading it. slowly but surely you realise that “hey i understand this! it isn’t that hard after all”. excited you read through rest of the theory.
