Grandpa's Wisdom
My Great-Grandpa Chester was an amazing man. He started his construction business in Klamath Falls, Oregon, by cutting homes in half, loading them onto a flatbed trailer and hauling them with a recently decommissioned GI 6x6. These were merely bunk houses, but after the war, housing was very sought after. His son, my Grandpa Ray, worked with him, until he too became a general contractor. Both of them working in the carpenter's union. Grandpa Ray took it one step further and sat for his Real Estate Broker's license, selling the homes he built, and a few on the side. My Dad, Steve, also grew up working for both my Grandpa Chester and Grandpa Ray, until he too started his own businesses. He, followed in their footsteps working in the carpenter's union, becoming a general contractor, then eventually a Real Estate Broker as well. All three of my older brothers worked for my Dad, learning the trades, and also learned the art of the deal, as it were.
Now, I too have been raised up working for my Dad, becoming a Real Estate Agent in turn. We are a family of four generations of construction and three generations of real estate. We have had the way prepared for us by farmers, laborers, and men and women who just plain loved their families and refused to give up.
Hard work only meant, “keep going”.
Grandpa Chester and Grandma Jane purchased their last two homes for cash. It was their dream, their legacy that their children, their grandchildren would eventually do the same.
I just purchased my first home two years ago, not for cash, but at a low price, with a low interest rate, and before I ever thought I would be able to. I have not seen my grandpa's vision for our family as of yet, but I am even now preparing the way for the next generation by making wise financial decisions today. This is something that anybody can do, whether you are buying a home, or buying groceries. Making, “today” decisions with, “tomorrow” in mind is a mindset that sets us up for success. Not only for ourselves, but for our children and for their children. This is a legacy.
Grandpa was indeed wise. His character and how he did life is still affecting our family three generations after he has passed away. Imagine, living life in such a way, making investments in such a way, sowing into your family in such a way that for three generations or more, your legacy continues to live.
By the way, I am the blonde little guy being held by Grandpa (blue plaid shirt) in both bottom pictures (favorite, who said anything about favorite?). I was blessed enough to know both of my great-grandparents until I was about twelve years old.
