Neil:
Dunno if anyone's talked about it, I mean probably, this fandom has been around for years, but Neil also sounding like nil meaning 0, and Neil saying to Andrew I'm tired of being nothing even though he chose that name for himself and it's half of his original name, and then Neil also being number 10, in contrast to Riko's 1, knowing that he would have been a raven had he stayed in evermore (destined 3, but after Jean gaining nmthe number 4), yet Neil as an identity doesn't just mean 0 or nothing, it's a fresh start, starting from 0. Neil receiving a countdown, time rewinding as his past catches up to him, Andrew saying he wants nothing, Nathaniel becoming Neil meaning 0 essentially bringing about the fall of all the numbers (the perfect court), the one to wipe the slate clean and restart.
STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP
andrew was the fox's deadliest investment but kevin is the deadliest piece on the board and i think that says something about why they work so well together.
Andreil headcanon i thought about in the shower and can’t get out of my head
So Neil is mentioned to read the news and shit like that in other languages to keep practicing so he doesn’t forget it. And we know he is also a) an overthinking anxious freak and b)a trust issues ridden weirdo
i think sometimes Neil needs to ramble and talk to himself to work through his thoughts or emotions but that’s vulnerable and he doesn’t wanna be overheard by just anyone, so he goes on these long rants in foreign languages to get it all out while also knowing nobody can understand him and keep practicing his languages
and it becomes this quirk or habit thay he can’t kick, so he just will randomly speak to himself in spanish or french or german like “y las llaves?” (“where did i leave the keys?”)
and Andrew picks up on this, he doesn’t realize what Neil is doing until Neil happens to do it in German and Andrew gets it. and he wasnt gonna ask Neil about it but it just. keeps. happening. so he caves in and during one of their Honesty Thing™️ games he asks. And Neil says he just does it to maintain the language. and that’s that. except it’s not.
Andrew slowly starts to learn Spanish and French from this, because hey eidetic memory right? so maybe he google translates a thing or two but for the most part, it just sorta happens. he always ignored Kevin when he rambles in french but now he starts listening and filing away verb tenses and vocab.
Andrew starts to understand more and more and now he knows exactly what Neil is rambling about which helps Andrew know what Neil needs. And Neil keeps being shocked at how well Andrew must know him because he always does or says the right thing to help him feel better.
and one day Neil is studying for some spanish exam and Andrew wants to just go to bed and Neil refuses to leave the desk so Andrew just switches to spanish and goes “Sí vamos a la cama te hablo en español para que practiques” (if we go to bed I’ll speak spanish so you can practice”)
and Neil has this ???wtf since when do you speak spanish??? moment and Andrew just shrugs it off and kisses him. and the next morning when Neil is not being deeply distracted by Andrew he teases Andrew asking if he learned for him. And Andrew, who never lies but does tweak the truth like a motherfucker, says no. because technically he didn’t right? memorizing is different.
it happens again later down the week when Neil is having a very passionate argument with Kevin in french about the last game they lost and how you had to pass it to me or whatever and Andrew that has been trying to watch TV just snaps at them both screaming in french “ça suffit!” (“that’s enough!”) and Neil and Kevin just stare at each other for a few minutes while Andrew goes back to his TV show like nothing happened.
321 is a countdown and it’s also the order which the Perfect Court falls apart in the drafts and such.
Jean (number 3) js killed by Riko.
Kevin (number 2) is killed by Riko.
Riko (number 1) is killed by Ichirou.
And while technically not dead in the same way as the others, Neil does leave Nathaniel (number 4) in the basement in Baltimore. So you know in a way Neil kicked off another countdown.
321 is also his dorm room number so there’s that.
Wymack: So, when did you two start dating?
Andreil: We’re… what?
Wymack: Oh, shit, you haven’t gotten to that episode yet.
do you think the reason why Mary's abuse is so justified is because she's a woman and Neil’s a boy? I really can't see people being so forgiving if neil was a girl and mary was a man.
It's probably wrong to, but sometimes i wonder if people who defend and justify her actions have ever experienced abuse from a parent before
Hey there,
This is a first for me - I did not actually know anyone liked Mary or that she was a polarizing character in AFTG. I feel like most AFTG discourse I engage in, I am aware of what I am debating against. Can you let me know on what basis people defend Mary? I’m assuming they might try to justify her abuse b/c she was trying to save Neil from Nathan/the Moriyamas, but as far am I’m aware most readers are are that Mary’s intentions (to protect Neil) and her actions (physically, verbally, and emotionally abusing Neil) are inherently contradictory. Especially if you compare her to Andrew, Neil’s other canonical “Protector” who Neil thinks in TKM would never direct his violent anger towards Neil, regardless of how upset Andrew is.
If there are people justifying Mary’s abuse of Neil that is very surprising (and also horrifying). Neil, of course, justifies her abuse to himself in Canon - although I think people forget that Neil also thinks to himself that he hated her & while his feelings to her become more complicated after he realizes she ran specifically to save his life, he seems still to resent the fact that she was physically & emotionally abusive to him. Neil still grieves his mother, of course, because parental death even to those who suffered from child abuse can still be difficult, especially considering how traumatizing Mary’s death was at such a young age. However, I do hope reader’s know that while Neil having a complicated relationship with his mother makes sense for his characterization, she was still written to be a child abuser who inflicted monumental trauma upon Neil.
Additionally, I actually find AFTG very fascinating in the fact that it does explore numerous abusive mothers. We have Mary, and we know about her different kinds of abuse from Neil’s narration. We have Tilda Minyard, who we know was abusive and neglectful of Aaron (and eventually Andrew). We have Cass Spear, who was neglectful of her foster children, which resulted in many of them being sexually abused. We have Maria Hemmick, who was emotionally & verbally abusive to Nicky, using her religion as justification. I think AFTG is a very exploration on how Motherhood does not automatically transform women into Perfect Human Beings who exist solely to love & take care of their children, and draws attention to the fact that there are many different ways women are also capable of abusing their children - which, like you mentioned, isn’t something that’s explored as often as abusive father figures. What is also interesting is that Neil, Andrew, Aaron, and Nicky all still seem to feel some form of “love” towards their mothers (Mary, Cass, Tilda, Aaron) showing how because society constantly tells people: your mother is your mother and does what she does because she loves you & gave you life, therefore you must love her in return can cause a lot of damage to those who have experienced maternal abuse as they try to reconcile their mother (who is meant to be a universal symbol of “love” and “nurture”) with their feelings of abuse and fear.
Neil persuades Andrew to go to Thanskgiving because Nicky’s love for his mother reminds Neil of Mary, and when he reminds Andrew in TRK that Nicky still has a mother who loves him, assuming this wouldn’t be something Andrew would understand, I wonder if Andrew partially relented not just b/c Neil offered for him & Kevin to attend, as well, but b/c Andrew was also moved to agree by remembering Cass, the mother he also had to give up. Ultimately, none of these women are good mothers.
Whether you ship Kandriel/Kandrew or not Kevin Day and Andrew Minyard truly have one of the most fascinating relationships of all time.
They can’t stand each other most of the time. They choose to almost never be in different rooms and their established seating position for group gatherings is pressed against each other on the couch.
Kevin was the first one to ever tell Andrew he could do something with his life. Andrew extremely secretly wants him to be right but doesn’t believe it. He hates him for trying to make him care and doesn’t give him a fraction of a sign this will ever matter to him but Kevin will never stop trying. Andrew hates him for it and it’s the reason he keeps him around.
Kevin wants Andrew to care more than anything in the world. The only thing Andrew cares about is Kevin. They both know that’s not enough.
Andrew’s promise of protection is the only reason Kevin feels safe enough to defy his abuser. When shit hits the fan Andrew has to be pulled off while he tries to strangle Kevin. They never discuss this again.
The first time we see Andrew genuinely smile is when Kevin covers up his tattoo and asserts his independence.
Andrew destroyed Kevin’s abuser with the exact injury he’d inflicted on Kevin. He did it for someone else.
April, please be gentle with me. I’m trying.

Rip nicky hemmick you would of loved sexting on snapchat
yes! i do like [problematic thing]! and unfortunately i am under no obligation to defend my interests to strangers on the internet. good day and thank you for your time
It’s a beautiful fandom
and I am a horrible goose
Remember during the winter banquet when Riko told Neil that he had bought off a doctor at Easthaven and Neil was so consumed with anger he punched Riko in the mouth, then in the eye, then got knocked into a table and brought Riko to the floor where he KEPT THROWING PUNCHES, the held on “as hard as he could” to Riko once people started pulling them away from each other and when they were finally separated, STILL fought against the crowd to try and go at him again, AND THEN, after Wymack literally hauled Neil off his feet, Neil was trembling so hard he thought the room was shaking and didn’t take his eyes off Riko until they were seated outside the court on opposite sides of the room?
And this was before andreil even kissed btw.
Andrew Minyard being unable to keep his hands off Neil is so amusing in retrospect like off the top of my head we have:
Finger on his chin
Hand on his mouth
Hands around his throat (tapping to the rhythm of his pulse)
Fingers in his shirt collar
Hand gripping the back of his neck
Hand ghosting across his back (omg can't believe I nearly forgot this)
And all of this is BEFORE Neil is aware that Andrew's attracted to him
Like we get it!! Every day is Fingers on His Face Friday for you! And Neil just LETS him?? They are both so unserious
fandom etiquette as a whole died when people who didn’t grow up on fandoms became stans during lockdown, yes, but why am i seeing people openly mocking fics on twitter. why am i seeing screenshots of fics with captions like “bro what is this 😭.” why am i seeing people mock fic writers for not knowing how sports or theater or college or any other organization operates in the real world.
“college is absolutely nothing like this” “why are we writing four people on the team scoring a hat trick in one game” “so tech work is nothing like this, hope that helps!”
if you don’t like a fic, and if you can’t suspend your belief enough to enjoy a fic that exaggerates or ignores real-world orgs, you don’t have to read it. you don’t have to screenshot it and put it on blast for twitter. you don’t have to post a link to it in the replies. the back button is literally there on your phone. it’s not giving baby’s first fandom anymore, it’s giving entitled asshole and it isn’t as cute as you think it is.
sometimes when im writing neil, i ask myself "am i going too far in how oblivious he is? wouldn't he have realized his own feelings yet at least, if no one else's?" and then i remember he went into the torture cult school he swore he'd never go to just in case it could spare andrew some pain and then did not regret it when it didn't work and also said verbatim that andrew is everything that matters and still had no clue he wanted to kiss him until andrew kissed him first
