government is to control the people.
people who point this out almost always say it as a segue into a conspiracy theory that only a bloody revolution can fix.
but this is true. anybody who has ever been in a riot or a lynching knows what I am talking about. social structures allow people to form social bonds and act in a social manner. remove those social structures, show those structures as false, and shit gets out of hand.
sure the social structures are arbitrary but it is a universal truth that all things you judge are arbitrary; as is the judgement. suck it up.
so now we are at the part where science fiction is lacking. usually an alien is just a parody of humanity. ferengi are capitalist, klingons are focused on war and status, and romulans are paranoid. it is nice to give an example of the social structure not being good enough as something not to do but it doesn't explore why that social structure exists.
what does the capitalism do? what does it control? are the ferengi hoarders? do they just make giant nests until they have to buy things with money? what do they do where the capitalism is what keeps them stable? how does their society go to shit?
how are the klingons controlling themselves? what do they act like when they think honor is a lie and they work against it? what are their conspiracy theories like. what is their honor controlling?
in humans these social orders have always failed on some level. they work on some levels and not others. if they go too long they shatter.
but a space faring species? this has to be something that works for them. this is a successful way for them to work together. so why does it work for them and not for humans? I have not seen this explored except one Deep Space 9 episode where quark talks about how humans are so very close to being monsters. what does a ferengi monster act like? what is their capitalism holding back? what does paranoia and secrecy do that stabilizes a romulan group?
aliens are always portrayed as better humans or inadequate humans. they are just enlightened or stupid. they are an exploration of specific human successes and failures. I have never seen them as creatures that developed a society because they had to.
