People using queer as an identifier now (including me) need to think about the history of the word as a slur. I’m a member of a gay men’s choir, I’m the second youngest member at 27. I may be okay being called queer but for everyone else there it’s still painfully derogatory. Also contextually inappropriate for this article.

I remember people having this same issue with Big Hero 6.

A lot of fans did not like that Hiro and Tadashi were portrayed as being mixed race. It’s like these studios are pretending to give us diversity but instead of going all in, they throw us this whitewashed, mixed race mess. No. Go all in. All or nothing. This isn’t real diversity. This is so big film execs can pat themselves on the back and all-white fandoms can feel good about how ‘diverse’ they are. Stop it.

Fun Fact: Mixed race kids actually exist. And more and more kids are born belonging to two or more races every day because of how many different races exist in America and the fact that interracial couples are becoming more widely accepted.

A lot of those mixed race kids will grow up being told that they’re not black/asian/hispanic enough because they’re half white or half something else. They’ll be teased and mocked for taking part in their own culture because they’re “only half”. They might even receive negative treatment from one or both sides of their extended family because of what race the other side of their family is.

More and more interracial couples are getting married in the US. More and more mixed race kids are being born. People need to learn to start understanding that being mixed race doesn’t make you “not enough”. Mixed race kids are both and they are neither. And they are becoming the norm.

You think being mixed race isn’t real diversity? I am half Italian, half Puerto Rican. I grew up with two incredibly different, vibrant cultures in my household. I listened to Pavarotti in my dad’s car and Salsa music in my mom’s. For dinner, we eat my abuelita’s arroz con gandules and my bisnonna’s homemade spaghetti. To me, being half and half is incredible. I got to experience an entire culture that I would’ve never learned about if I’d been only Italian or only Puerto Rican.

When a character is mixed race they are not more and they’re not less. They are who they are. People thinking that mixed race characters/families are less important than single race characters/families is incredibly ignorant as well as harmful to the many mixed race children in the world who will grow up thinking that they are worth less than their single race friends.

I remember waiting in line to meet Baymax at Disneyland and there was a boy of maybe six years old in front of me, visiting with his mom. My friends left me to get fast passes while I held our spot in line, so as it happens when two adults are in a long line with no other adults to talk to, we got to chatting; Mom and son were visiting from Seattle while her husband was on a business trip. He was from Japan, and she was white. Their son probably looked more white than Asian, so I wouldn’t have guessed except it just came up while we were talking.

I end up talking to the boy about Baymax, is he excited, does he want to be like Hiro, etc. and the boy made a comment of, “Hiro is Asian but I’m only half so i’m not really like him.”

So I said, “Aunt Cass is white, so maybe Hiro is half, just like you.”

It felt odd to have a conversation about race with a kid who couldn’t be older than six, but you could see his face light up with the idea that Hiro was like him. Even at six, he understood that he was different from others for being mixed. He knew his race mattered to who he was and how people treated him, and he already felt sad that there weren’t characters like him.

Representation matters. Representation is meant to build up a spectrum of people. People criticized Honey Lemon for being blonde, but she made my Cuban friend so happy because she looked and acted exactly like my blonde friend from Cuba. Having characters who don’t look like “everyone” is the very point of representation. To have one stand in for the whole is not representation, that’s tokenship. Diversity is representing everyone, and inclusion is about making sure everyone has a voice, and that includes people of mixed race, people who deviate from racial standards or gender norms, people with varying ranges of disabilities, etc.

Hi, I'm 25 and debating starting male-to-female HRT. However, I'm scared that HRT won't help me at all. It seems like HRT does so little after puberty, especially by the time one gets in their 20s. I'm really scared that I'll just end up being someone in a male body, but with breasts. Is there anything you can say to someone having this fear? Thank you, and sorry, I suspect this is a silly question.

Actually, the claim that HRT doesn’t do much after puberty is a myth. I started when I was 31 years old and now I’m 35. =)

Seriously, I transitioned at 39 and I’m 41 now. Hormones are magic whatever your age and while some things stay, many things change and it’s been totally worth it for me.

I felt the same way before I started transitioning and especially because I have a fair masculine build. But you know what I’ve learned from my experience so far? Fuck it! There is always hope and you could end up surprising yourself with the results.

I think results vary, I don’t see much difference between pre-hrt and 8 years on hrt
