shane's big ass smile when ilya squeezes his tit and calls him a pervert is very important to who #myshane is
people who definitely know that Hollander and/or Rozanov have A Thing With A Man (of variably certain identity):
various dentists
hotel housekeeping staff
the kid who works late shifts at the drugstore where Ilya buys condoms (often) and lube (less often)
cleaners and laundry service employees
a kid on vacation with his parents in Vegas bored out of his mind because he's 14 and not allowed in the bars or casinos at their hotel and he's really hitting the grumpy teenager phase so he's pissed at his parents because he wanted to go birdwatching in the desert and instead he's on the hotel roof at night pointing his sick-ass binoculars (which he bought himself with money he earned by mowing their neighbours' lawns for a year) at the surrounding buildings and oh look there's two people making out on that rooftop terrace—wait, isn't that the guy from the Rolex ads?
Janice at the grocery store closest to the Hollander cottages who knows damn well that "David's boy" doesn't eat Nutella
the Voyageurs' nutritionist knows Hollander is fucking someone working for the Bears because he might not log it as sex but even Hollander doesn't actually do extra cardio after a game
employee at an airport phone repair kiosk in Chicago who was checking Ilya’s battery specs when "Jane" texted him "If I win you suck my dick first"
one of the parents at Game Changers Hockey Camp who is a couple's counsellor and a bit too good at her job
Gerry (78) three doors down from the Hollanders who has lived in his house since he was born and has made it his solemn duty to know everything that goes on in his neighbourhood
the owner of the bespoke jeweller's shop once Shane Hollander purchases the second ring, which is identical to the first, and a plain gold chain
the apprentice of the bespoke jeweller's shop a week before that when he recognises the ring he watched his boss make for Shane Hollander sitting on Ilya Rozanov's bare chest in a post-game interview on TV
the boy with the bread 🍞🌼
a day with at the beach for hollanov looks like this
- shane packs all the sunscreen and towels ilya packs snacks
- shane lathers ilya in sunscreen part 1
- ilya goes in the water immediately after which means he is no longer lathered in sunscreen
- shane lathers ilya in sunscreen part 2
- “let me put sunscreen on you too solnyshko” “i already put sunscreen on” “yes but i want to touch you now turn around”
- they make a big fucking sand castle to one up the kids making a sand castle
- ilya buys a popsicle and not so subtly deepthroats it in front of shane who rolls his eyes
- they both get in the water and compete in who can swim the fastest
- ilya pretends to be a shark and tackles shane
- shane lathers ilya in sunscreen part 3 and ilya may or may not get a boner about it
- shane complains about sand the entire day because it is a sensory nightmare
shane effortlessly defying ilya's internal self deprecation with the most blunt, heartstopping, to the point sincerity is such an important part of their dynamic to me
"but you know me, i'm lazy, so." "i don't know that side of you at all."
"is that what we are going to do? relax?" "i hope so. i would like to relax with you. for once."
"because you like to be bad." "hey, that's not what this is. you and me. maybe it was at first but, not now, and not for a long time."
to the point where it even usurps other peoples interpretations of ilya before he gets the chance to internalize them -
"but, you hate him." "no. i mean, i get that. but no. i love him."
and ilya has that exact same subtly gobsmacked expression every time he does it
I love it when people respond to witnessing some tomfuckery before noon with "it's [time] in the fucking morning" like it's too early to be witnessing some ridiculous nonsense. As if the bullshit has a schedule, can't start hijinks before five o' clock. Them people doing bicycle jousting with umbrellas at 7 am have been at it for 5 hours now.
Reblog this and tell me what was your biggest crying over a piece of fiction. You can be vague if you don't want to spoil.

happy bi visibility day! 🩷💜💙
every single angle and moment between them
"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
I have a lot of thoughts re: when Ilya and Shane began having feelings versus when they noticed them versus when they examined them versus when they accepted them (all of which are different imo, lmao, boys please 😂). Even if it wasn’t the beginning, I think David is correctly detecting, in a shapeless sort of way, that the Tampa All-Star weekend was an immensely impactful and important transition in Shane and Ilya’s situation-/relationship.
I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the narrative/visual framing of it, the first part of which absolutely exists in the book as well: the moment Ilya sits in the sand on a Tampa beach as the sun sets, and tells Shane, “Found you.”
That is the sunset of the hookups and stubborn ‘this doesn’t mean anything’ era of Shane and Ilya’s relationship. And that sun doesn’t rise again until they’re at the cottage, the morning after they’ve finally, finally admitted “I love you.”
It was a long, uncertain night, but it was worth it.
This sunset and sunrise — the sunset and sunrise of them, of what they allow themselves to admit they mean to each other — both happen in the 24th minute of their respective episodes. These, paired with the almost 24 minutes of no music between arrival at the cottage and sunrise, is so freaking powerful to me. That gentle swell of music paired with the sweetness of the dawn scene gets me Every Time. It feels like overwhelming relief.
Somehow the blanket being thrown over Ilya’s shoulder and them leaning into each other feels like the resolution of how tentatively Ilya reached for Shane at sunset on that beach: just barely enough to touch. Like he’s asking, ‘Is this okay? Do I still get to do this? Do I still get to have even the smallest part of you?’ And his answer comes at dawn over a lake deep in Canadian wilderness: ‘Yes, all of me.’
GOING TO NEED NORWAY TO END ENGLAND OR I WILL DO IT MYSELF 😭😭😭
The longest ongoing argument between Shane and Ilya is who made the first move. Their friends and teammates have learned to never ask that question or they'll argue about it for hours.
"So, how did you two meet?" That was fine, safe territory.
They both answered the same way, "a parking lot in Saskatchewan when we were 17."
But, the question, "so who made the first move?" Unsafe territory, turn back now.
"You introduced yourself to me!"
"That wasn't making a move! You organized a whole photoshoot."
"You shook my hand, twice! You looked me up and down!"
"I did not!"
"You had a crush on me."
"You had a crush on me!"
"You called me a hot player to watch."
"I did not and you know that, Rozanov."
"My English wasn't good."
"You - okay, draft night?"
"What about it? Oh, when you kept staring at my cock?"
"No! When you kept touching my hand and had your legs all spread in front of me!"
"You were staring at me."
"You winked at me."
"You took water bottle."
"Because you told me to!"
"Well, you were blushing on photoshoot."
"You called me pretty, twice!"
"You were laughing!"
"So were you!"
"Because you kept looking at me like - like that!"
"You told me you organized the shoot!"
"You agreed to it! You wanted to see me again."
"You starting jerking off at me in the shower!"
"Only because you were checking out my ass!"
"I was not!"
"Yes, you were! I would not do that if you were not checking me out!"
"You asked for my room number!"
"You waited for me to come out of the shower - I gave you time to leave!"
"I was drying my hair."
"You were waiting for me."
"I was not, I just wanted to talk!"
"Talk! You wanted to talk to hot Russian you invited to your room at night?"
"Yes!"
"You were on your knees in five seconds!"
"You kissed me!"
