Thinking about Rise Splinter hate… it always makes me kinda sad. Like YEAH, it wasn’t right the way he treated the boys. But like, Rise is really good at expressing subtle familial dynamics, and one of the big ones for me is the fact that like… there’s always an undercurrent of “It’s complicated” to their interaction with Splinter. IRL, it always pisses me off to see people casting judgments on people’s relationships with their family, because you don’t know!! Yeah, they hurt you, but not everything’s black and white. It’s complicated. Because you love them, and sometimes you get to understand a little bit better why things happened as you get older.
In a matter of smaller importance, hate for him loses so many opportunities in his character… even things that might just be kinda off-handedly mentioned.
He fought for SEVEN years—give me Splinter with chronic pain. Splinter relating to his boys with their neurodivergence—it’s HIS fault they have it!!!
That was seven years of imprisonment, or even simpler, an abusive relationship. What did he learn from that? How did he change? What things are skewed in his worldview?
His childhood! We saw his relationship with his grandfather a bit, but how did Splinter grow into his dream of being a movies star? HIM BEING A MOVIE STAR. He was both a rebellious team and a literal celebrity, this guy probably took empyrean at some point without knowing it, just like. Recreationally or something LMAO.
I maybe just need more of his old man knowledge. Him being so loser-core was a great move by the Rise team, and I could SEE where his story was going—ROBBED. We were ROBBED.
splinter hate is CRAAAAZY when he's such an INTERESTING character who does actually have a lot of obvious depth. like he's goofy and he's objectively flawed as a parent but he does go out of his way to improve himself and LEARN throughout the show, and he does listen and apologize when he knows he's messed up. his issues are so similar to leo's actually, leo's a kid so he's got more leeway to be shitty but idk when people act like its endearing on him and not on splinter. splinter's hilarious free my man
on the other side of the coin i dont really like when people make him a perfect loving parent either,,, i think people going for all kinds of interpretations in order to serve whatever story they need is fine but i do prefer kind of messy parent splinter, i think its kind of sad to see him reduced down to bad or good. he LOVES his boys so dearly and he would NEVER intentionally want to hurt them, but he's quick to cast judgement when he's angered/feels disrespected (evil league of mutants comes to mind, but also in turtle dega nights when donnie first stops the tank) and he's really a lot more inattentive than he should be. but there are REASONS behind this, coming out of an abusive relationship, fighting in bloodsports against his consent for years, you could probably count the whole draxum thing as traumatic (its presented as kind of silly in the show, but considering what it lead to,, its a pivotal moment in the backstory. its one of those things that i reasonably feel can be recontextualized because its so essential) and then dealing with crippling body dysmorphia and being forced into the sewers with no company other than his children,, it really adds up
idk like ,,,, you can still be extremely traumatized and be a horrible parent. in fact trauma can be a direct CAUSE of being a bad parent because that kind of thing influences every facet of your life and if youre unprepared emotionally, yeah. but splinter isn't the kind of person to double down and become more overtly nasty when he feels cornered. if he gets the feeling that his kids are actually upset with him, he backtracks. this is actually kind of a key trait of his, that he does try very hard to correct himself when he messes up. he's communicative and apologetic, and he tries very hard to be that way.
and also this is maybe something that i just have a wider problem with when it comes to the way people interpret things in cartoons at times but splinter's actions in eps like lair games (especially in lair games) and flushed but never forgotten are meant to be like. jokes. its absurdist comedy that's meant to catch you off guard. there are more serious emotional beats in rise you can use but i think when youre adapting this world and characters into a more serious tone you have to keep that kind of thing in mind because some things are meant to be surprising and absurd for the sake of making you laugh. i think the best comparison i can think of is how in musical movies they're not actually singing (in most cases, sometimes the fact that they actually are is played for laughs it depends. but yk what i mean). the joke is that this is kind of a shitty thing he's doing but taking the actions themselves seriously in a vacuum in order to cast shame on a character has always been odd to me. that'd be like calling raph abusive for rolling up the window on mikey's neck in late fee. or calling the teetz murderers because they caused a robot mass suicide that one time. it just doesnt make any sense
The thing about taking the genre into consideration is a really important point. Idk if this is really a new thing because I absolutely didn't see it happening in fandoms 10-20 years ago, but there seems to be a trend of people taking media, especially children's media, 100% seriously and I would think they're taking the piss if I didn't know for a fact they aren't.
Like that one poster who claimed Donnie was a eugenicist based on his actions in Mind Meld. Like. You can't apply that to real-life family dynamics. It's meant to be over the top for humor's sake, it's not meant to exemplify Donnie's views on eugenics. This is a show about brothers, sometimes the plot is that they're being assholes to each other, and it's awfully hard to show them being assholes without them doing anything assholish. Not to mention the literal point of the whole episode is that Donnie was wrong and learns to appreciate his brothers for who they are. (also he's literally fourteen-he's a freshman in high school, of course he's going to do dumbass and morally bankrupt shit, his logic and empathy centers are still forming. teenagers do cruel and idiotic shit like that, especially to their siblings, 98% of them grow out of it and grow up perfectly fine)
On some level I do get where they're coming from, you can't always go off of "the writers intended this to be funny so it's not problematic" because there are plenty of examples of writers writing in stuff that was meant to be funny or completely normal and was actually pretty fucked up. (domestic abuse in I Love Lucy, sitcom dads being toxic pieces of shit) But there's gotta be some nuance to it. Raph smacking Leo out of the way is clearly not the writers trying to portray Healthy Family Activities-it's just slapstick comedy. Donnie putting subcutaneous trackers in everyone, that's implied to be messed up even under the show logic. You have to apply some sort of 'what did the writers intend' rationale to it first.
You get some grey area with shit like Leo's shock collar, even though it's played for laughs in the episode it's definitely crueler than the other two and it still feels like it goes a little too far. (though I will say it is peak twin shit, I know the writers said they didn't see them as twins but I really feel like they were subconsciously writing them as such) But still, it's just not meant to be taken that seriously. They're dumbshit brothers who do dumbshit stuff to each other, that's what the whole show is about. Portraying that involves them acting like dumbshits sometimes.

In Defense of Donnie's Gifts
I'm ngl I sorta think the shock collar was still just an odd writing decision but as far as PREMISE:
It CANNOT be a coincidence that this is the first time (and one of VERY few times) that Donnie's soft shell is referenced. Once, when Raph is hesitating to tell Donnie his gifts suck ass, and he uses the soft shell metaphor, and after that with Meat Sweats and his paprika, describing it as not just soft, but delicate. Weird, but he is a cannibal, so. (Side note, Meat Sweats never removed his battle shell? How does he know? Or did he take it off and replace it after the pound of butter? Is he using it to facilitate steaming and tenderness? Is it broken? I feel like it should have something in there that could break him out of the sausage links)
Then in that last little scene- "Forget it. You guys are great the way you are!" - we get the shot of Donnie from behind pre group hug, with his brothers facing the camera. (Idk if I'm making shit up, but I feel like this is a staple for Donnie episodes? It def happens in the Purple Game, maybe Smart Lair.) The framing draws attention to his battle shell. The battle shell even kinda matches the gifts, compared to the rest of their gear and even Donnie's tech, color coded and way more streamlined than stuff like the tech bo.
Donnie's soft shell is an innate, unchangeable part of him, a feature of his species, that he treats as a handicap. Probably MORE unchangeable than the character traits he sees as holding his brothers back, which they do sorta... not mature out of, but refine, rather, over the course of the show. Donnie's shell can't experience a character arc, but he sees it as holding him back. So he FIXES it.
The Mad Dogs don't really have a motivation for beating stuff up besides "Hero Time!!!" at this point. That's why it's so interesting how EARLY this happens, unlike with Mind Meld, he isn't trying to change his brothers to make them better at a task that he actually CARES about. Donnie in particular never gets a super intense moral compass besides stuff that threatens people he already cares about, and he doesn't have any grudges (no Purple Dragons) at this point in the series. Hero Goals are largely devices for him to hang out with his dum dum brothers. I'm not diagnosed or anything but my vibes are certainly... Spectrum-Adjacent, I definitely have trouble with literal thinking and reading people. One thing that happens sometimes is people will be using "task" as "reason to hang," and I will get a lot more fixated on completing said task than I really should, to the point of annoying people. I confuse "Successful Task Completion" with "Successful Social Interaction." It makes me come across as bossy and controlling without realizing it.
So, we got a Donnie who thinks Arbitrary Goals are essential to Hero Bonding, who has been treating his life like an mmorpg - armor upgrades, skill trees, grinding, sometimes fighting through random dungeons to hang out with his bros. He's probably even slightly better at Fighting Stuff than his brothers atp, he isn't dealing with a mystic learning curve and his special interest has been Weapons of Mild Destruction for years already. His brothers want to level up, take harder missions, he tries to get them there with his access to High Level Loot.
Of course, his brothers are all min-maxing, not trying to multiclass their purple ass out of squishy glass cannon town. So, it doesn't go well. Unfortunately, the lesson Donnie learns (besides brotherly affection) is that his brothers don't NEED fixing like he does. Mind Meld and Donnie vs. Witch Town sorta finish this arc out as best as the series can.
Where I would have liked to see this go:
A S2 Donnie's Gifts or Mind Meld style episode (Donnie tries to improve his brothers, to their dismay) where the motivator isn't goal completion, but protectiveness. We see a bit of the fear in Purple Game, a bit of the contingency planning with the escape pods in the movie. Maybe a more upfront "training montage" type scenario, a high tech robo dojo to develop their mad skills, or just a tense moment after a skin of their teeth Genius Built rescue.
The brothers confront Donnie eventually-- not just the passive conflict resolution of Donnie's Gifts. They get mad. Push Donnie to the point he's at in Turtle-Dega Nights. They get a rant about not wanting them to get hurt, of course, but also that he's already done so much to FIX himself, make sure he's not a LIABILITY, why can't they at least try to stay SAFE? The dangers are real now, and as far as Donnie knows he REALLY can't do anything about threats like the Shredder. His tech did nothing the first time. His brothers are the ones with the mystic mojo, and they don't even realize how SERIOUS things could get.
Anyway. Protective Donatello my Beloved. Let my boy go apeshit.

I’ve been saying this for ages….People don’t usually see outside of themselves and how they see the world. So, Donatello gives his brothers such terrible gifts because to him, these gifts are brilliant BECAUSE his brothers should want to fix their flaws JUST LIKE HE FIXED HIS OWN.
Of course, his soft shell is not a flaw, it’s just a part of him. But with how diligently he protects his shell coupled with how his shell is perceived by his brothers….I believe that he’s internalized the thought that his softshell is a shortcoming, even though he would NEVER voice that belief.
But I’ve always said that if humans don’t have shells, but are deadly advisories/ninjas nonetheless, why then would Donnie feel less than/flawed for having a softshell? A hard shell is an addition, not a subtraction. 🤔
I think that Donnie saying "Ah, forget it. You guys are great the way you are" was so telling!
Again, when people nitpick at you for something, 99 times out of 100 it has nothing to do with you but has everything to do with their own insecurities. So this phrase from Donnie + the camera angle being centered on his shell in the last scene says more about what Donnie thinks of his own "flaws" than about what he thinks of his brothers perceived ones...
His brothers may be fine without the enhancements, but does he think he could also go without and be "great the way he is?"
I do believe, though, that there was some minor character development, specifically when the boys learned to fight properly and without enhancements from Splinter.
He wore no battle shell the entire time he was in the ninja garb, and he kicked butt and took names.
I'd like to think that this experience changed his mind set about his shell, even just a little bit.
But, what do you think? 😌
Personally I think Donnie would still internalize failure
With the Shredder, SHELLDON, and Karai. The Krang fight where he couldn’t quite sheild himself and Mikey, and so no one was there to protect Leo when he was alone. (Maybe even losing Raph too.) I think he’d see himself not accomplishing enough.
I think in regards to the tentacle scene, he’d compartmentalize his trauma and be fine. However, he’d fail to do the same in regards to his own “shortcomings”, his failures, what needed to get “fixed”.
The fact that Donnie was willing to risk the tentacle invasion to his shell, does show growth in how he sees himself though I think.

in fandoms I have this habit of just drifting in and out of them on my own leisure, occasionally getting incredibly obsessed with something and then drifting away as something new caught my attention, almost never interacting with the source material.
this means that I often do not see updates or events or whatnot for a long, long time until I eventually cycle back to that particular fandom.
what I'm getting to here is that I just learned about the official localisation of aai2. more than 6 months late. here are my reactions (to some of them, at least).
Justine Courtney as Verity Gavèlle: it's nice, it's pretty, it's elegant, but I can't help but think that she doesn't look like a Verity. Idk it's a great name but she just doesn't give off Verity vibes to me. Gavèlle is a fantastic last name though
Raymond Shields as Eddie Fender: it's alright. I don't outright hate it or anything. the pun seems a bit on the nose but while I'm attached to Ray I could probably grow to like Eddie.
Sebastian Debeste as Eustace Winner: They slaughtered my boy. Look it's a great pun and all but that's Sebby, Debeste boy in the world. You might as well have just made me watch as you shot him in cold blood.
Simon Keyes as Simeon Saint: I have no logical reason for it but I just like Simon Keyes better. Who knows though, Simeon may grow on me.
John Marsh as Shaun Fenn: I like this one, actually. I really liked him as a character when I first saw him but John Marsh just didn't stick in the brain memorably enough. I especially like the last name.
