ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY July 14, 2026 at 05:00PM Is there an angry Sith using force lightning in the Tatacoa Desert? This is not science fiction, but a red sprite with multiple streamers! Ordinary lightning occurs when thundercloud particles collide, lose their electrons, and build up negative charge at the cloud bottom. The cloud’s negative charge repels negative charge deeper into the Earth, leaving Earth’s surface positively charged. The opposite charges attract, reaching towards each other and superheating the air into a white strike of plasma. Red sprites are millisecond events triggered by positive cloud-to-ground lightning. They extend up into the mesosphere where the air is too thin for thunder. Their red glow comes from heated molecular nitrogen. There are several potential causes for red sprites, including that the preceding positive lightning exposes the negatively charged cloud core to the positively charged upper atmosphere, allowing those charges to connect. NASA’s Juno has observed sprites on Jupiter, indicating that sprites occur on other planets! Image: https://ift.tt/zPb2w6Q via NASA https://ift.tt/qURxdfC APOD --> https://ift.tt/nq5hG7R
I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). The amount of adult women honestly afraid to lift weights bc they think they’ll get bulky as though bulking isn’t a full time job that athletes have to spend all their time on and anyone on earth gets shredded from just using their adult muscles for their intended purpose, girl your bone density 🥀
if you say women are intentionally nerfed from birth in 2026 people look at you like you’re insane and start condescendingly telling you about how women are just better at different things (but not during their periods haha) but this was a completely basic feminist talking point I grew up with like “girls can do it too! [shot of little girls climbing and running with boys]” nickelodeon commercial tier base level I hate it how is everyone suddenly dumber than the average 7 year old
Happy Black Fae Day!
I did this as part of a collaboration post with many other wonderful black creatives over on IG. My theme was Warrior Fairy.

Pro hag, anti ai
the cultural object of the black hole is kind of remarkable. It's almost an anti-God in a sense, a negative infinity. Yeah there's this kind of dead sun that's collapsed into an infinitely dense point, and if you fall past its event horizon you're fucked. Every schoolchild knows this. A black hole can be introduced in a superhero blockbuster without any explanation except for its established look and the name "black hole", and this will be understood as the ultimate natural disaster, which even superman could not hope to defeat. truly S-tier cosmic object
If there's any proof we need that our reality is made of math, it's that graph function singularities exist as physical features of our world. Undefined algebraic points exist, we can see them, they float around space touching things and fucking them up beyond all recognition, and they look like marauding black death wrapped in a spherical gradient of tortured spacetime.
Like, words literally cannot describe how cool black holes are. If they did not actually exist, I doubt that the world's 100 top rated sci-fi writers locked in a room for a month brainstorming could come up with anything nearly as good. When do you ever get something that is as top tier psychologically impactful as it is so deeply rooted in fundamental scientific truth about reality?
A billion and a half years ago, 2 black holes in a suicide pact of a too-tight orbit finally collided and merged into an even larger black hole.
This event produced a shuddering in the fabric of reality that spread out through the universe at the speed of light. During the brief milliseconds of the merger, these two black holes were radiating 50X more power than all of the fusion in all of the stars in the entire observable universe, and turning all of that radiated energy directly into distortions of the coordinate system of the universe.
Eventually, we detected the first such event in 2015. Two mathematical abominations of gravity collided on the other side of the universe, and it rattled spacetime so hard that we felt it quake here on Earth billions of light years away.
Black holes are genuine cosmic horrors.

"Subd Geog" means that subject headings may be divided geographically (as in Art History -- European) but I cannot stop reading it as Subdivisions Georg. Subdivisions Georg, who haunts the Library of Congress and adds millions of subdivisions to catalog entries per year, is an outlier and should not be counted.
