Shane and Ilya not realizing the spark of attraction they're feeling is that they are potential soulmates. They're so casual so chill, its just hooking up, right up until the tuna meltdown where Shane watches 'Shane Hollander' fade onto Ilya's chest, can feel 'Ilya Rosanov' burn onto his. For a second its the best moment of both of their lives, this evidence of them choosing each other, this means something to both of them.

But then Shane can't do this, he's going to have to hide this, this is too much. He can't--he just can't. He forgot a team meeting in the morning.

And Ilya's had his soulmate for one minute before he's rejected him. He chose Ilya right up until it mattered, but that's not a surprise, who would want to be seriously tied body and soul to him.

I've been obsessed with a song I found randomly and recently and I've been playing it over and over because its been inspiring a Heated Rivalry oneshot I've mostly planned and just started writing. Before I went farther I wanted to look up and see if the band was at all problematic because it is a male singer likely singing about a woman and of course it turns out its an AI song....

I am not hugely in to music and I rarely listen to a whole discography. I just like the random songs I like (that i find in all sorts of places) so it seems I am super susceptible to being tricked and need to be more careful before I put a song on repeat because this is not the first time...

Not sure if I want to keep writing without a song (I was just going to write out the visuals of the cologne commercial I was putting Ilya into and have Shane do a live reaction to it on some silly interview show) and just let the audience fill in their own, or if I should just scrap the idea entirely....

There are a lot of things I really struggle with when it comes to The Long Game but the fact that we go from the Voyagers accusing Shane of tripping on purpose to him semi-seriously discussing transferring to Ottawa in the span of a page is unforgivable. He deserves at least a chapter to parse through the fact that the team he's lead to three Stanley Cups has allied itself against him with nary a second thought. He deserves to feel betrayed and we, as the audience, deserve to see him work through it.

This is Shane Fucking Hollander. His entire identity has been built around hockey for most of his life. He bleeds Voyagers' red, white, and blue. To make no attempt to reckon with how Shane is stripping away a chunk of his identity by leaving undermines everything his character has stood for so far.

So much more work should have been put into the lead up to it. There should have been conscious focus brought to Shane feeling increasingly uncomfortable in the Voyagers' company throughout the book. We should have seen casual homophobia that becomes steadily more difficult for Shane to push through. We deserved internal conflict even prior to Shane and Ilya being outed and, after that, the dawning realisation that something has been broken that can't be fixed. We needed Shane explicitly clinging to this team with gritted teeth through sheer stubbornness draped in unwavering loyalty and a blind denial of the fact that what he's desperately hanging onto has already gone. We deserved to see the floor drop out from under Shane when faced with the truth; that he has poured everything into a team that has already turned its back on him. The fact that we don't get that is a disservice to the character that boarders on obscene.

Ok. Well it’s also not realistic for there to be an out gay player in hockey.

As much as this show follows the world of the sport as faithfully as it can, it’s also a romance and an exercise in wish-fulfilment. It’s fictional. It’s an escape.

So many times during the series, the boys could have and would have been either caught or filmed or threatened or had violence enacted upon them - but it’s not a documentary.

Personally I’m all in favour of the fantasy of a group of men who aren’t all homophobic pricks. we can dream, Harold.

Years into the future, publicly out and married Hollanov, playing together for the Ottawa Centaurs, are being invited to the All-Star Game. But they are invited to play on opposite teams. Organisers want to promote the event as bringing back the old ‘rivalry’.

And Shane and Ilya love to play on the same team, but playing against each other was always very exciting. And they are competitive. So they agree. 

New hockey fans are confused because they only know Hollanov as married, and yes, they saw some old recordings of Boston vs Montreal games and they know that the rivalry was legendary, but can the hockey husbands do it again now? They are married and they're so in sync with each other now!

Meanwhile, old hockey fans are treating it as the return of the legend. It’s fun to watch Hollanov beating other teams together, but them playing against each other? Again? After everything? It just brings so many memories! Nostalgia hits the hockey world hard, and the social media buzz is absolutely insane. 

The actual All-Star Game viewership is at an all-time high, and it’s not enough to say that Hollanov delivers. Because them playing against each other is pure madness. It’s electric, it’s competitive, almost brutal, and it is the most exciting game hockey fans have ever seen. Shane and Ilya are both captains of their teams, and they are giving their all. Usually, the All-Star games are calmer, more fun, but it's obvious that the married couple treats it more seriously than the Olympics. 

Harris gets so much material to create at least a month's worth of best on ice moments from that event.

And maybe, maybe Ilya and Shane kiss on the ice after. Passionately. Very passionately. They could fall on the ice during the kiss and not care. Shane forgets his no PDA rules.

So let’s say it’s good that Cliff Marleau and Hayden Pike (Ilya is sure that he was invited by mistake, or they desperately needed someone to fill an empty spot after someone couldn’t come) are there and separate them because the kiss is heated and they don’t look like they plan to stop anytime soon, and children are watching this whole thing!

Shane and Ilya do not come to post-game drinks later. 

Nobody is really surprised.

Rereading The Long Game and while I love this book, it is truly baffling to me how ALL of Shane’s big issues are just.. glossed over.

Shane coming out to his team? A sentence. ( thank you Jacob for already saying this will be on screen.)

Shane “getting over” his disordered eating and “deciding” he can eat cheeseburgers and cake now? Half a sentence.

Shane’s fear about coming out coming true and being drug through the media and deciding to switch teams? A sentence.

His best friend J.J. apologizing for being a jerk and treating him like a traitor? A sentence.

Also exactly zero of these moments happen on the page. We’re just told they happened.

Like I’m just confused. We spent all this time in therapy with Ilya and don’t get me wrong I loved it.. but.. doesn’t Shane deserve something?? A chapter??

I love baby Shane and I just wanted a little more of him😭

I like to think that after being outed and moving to the Ottawa Centaurs, Shane’s reputation doesn’t so much as take a hit as it does evolve, seemingly overnight, from Canadian Golden Boy that can do no wrong to Hockey Siren that charmed and seduced his competition. He goes from Boy Next Door to Dangerous Heartthrob. Everyone wants a piece of him. Teenaged girls start calling him daddy. Thirst edits are everywhere. All those photo shoots he’s done are popping back up again. The internet is feral.

Harris is very thankful the man is never online because he knows Shane would be embarrassed by all the attention.

Ilya is five seconds away from posting a sex tape to remind everyone his man IS TAKEN!
