5 Ways To Achieve Your Dreams
How to Get Motivated to be an Adult & Clean Your Room/Study Space
Pump up the jams. Blast some tunes. Just make sure your roommates are okay with it first.
Remind yourself that this is what adults do and you will probably feel more productive/motivated to get other tasks done if you do this!
Remember that no matter how gross your room is - the damages can always be mitigatedÂ
Grab a big trash bag or a small plastic bag from the grocery store (because I know Iâm not the only one who hoards them)
Gather up all of the trash first. It will look easier to clean once you have done this
Bring all those dishes to the sink now - I like to do this when I am the only one home because I am a plate/mug/bowl hoarder and itâs embarrassing okay?Â
Now begin to pick up everything off the floorÂ
Place items from floor in appropriate places - for me itâs somewhere in the depths of my closet
But you could be productive and fold them or wash them?Â
Now go ahead and vacuum if you have carpet. Youâd be surprised how much hair/crumbs are on the floor
Take a damp rag or wet wipes and go over the surface of your desk/dressers/TV stand
Straighten up - so move pictures and decor back to optimal positions
Make your bed
Use essential oils, a candle or air freshener to remind all who entire your domain that your world smells like rainbows and sunshine and itâs because you live there - thatâs your natural smell, actually.Â
Brag on yourself for how good of a job you just did. Look at you, what an adult.Â
Happy studying + cleaning, realistic students!
All jokes about being an introvert aside, humans are naturally social creatures and we need stimulation. Whether you're self isolating or your city/town/country is on lockdown, this will affect your mental health if you don't take care of yourself. I know we all joke that we never go outside anyway, but the fact we can't go out, even if we want to, is going to affect us. So I've compiled a list of things to do!
Clean. Cleaaaaaaan. Being in a clean house will make this so much nicer. If you're stuck in your house all day, being in a clean home will help. Plus, it's good exercise.
If you have a garden and can go in it, do! Plant some stuff for spring, tidy it up, feed the birds, whatever.
If you have a Netflix watch list, go through it. Watch stuff in the background while cleaning or something.
If you're sick, change your bed. I've been in bed a lot and I just changed it and it's nice to have fresh sheets instead of my sweaty ones.
Take up a craft. Go on pinterest and diy some shit.
Watch documentaries
Change out of your pyjamas, even if it's just into a hoodie and some sweats. You'll feel better.
If you have schoolwork to do, do it. I know, it's boring, but itll kill some time.
Paint, collage, sketch. Try and improve your skills. Get creative!
Call your family and friends! Facetime or phone. Call your mum, your auntie, your best friend, whoever. We're human and we need contact.
Rearrange your furniture, create a new environment.
Have a clear out of clothes you don't wear anymore
Read!! Read books you haven't read yet or reread your favourite books. Get lost in a different world.
If you're not in school, perhaps teach yourself something. I like to study stuff in my own time. Botany, human evolution, space, anything. Learning stuff is fun when you're not getting graded on it.
Fuck it, learn a new language. Go on omegle or something and talk to people from different countries and test your skills.
Bake, cook, make something. I recommend bread. I have a recipe under my #angie talks tag.
Support small businesses. I'm on a group chat with fellow shop owners and they're all worried about the sales going down. I know, right now you're worried about needing necessities, but shop around on etsy and buy birthday presents, diy kits, jewellery etc. You'll make their week.
If you're sick, open the windows. Its recommended for coronavirus anyway but its nicer to be in bed with the window open.
Watch nature outside your house. For like half an hour today I watched birds. I counted 56 this morning.
Make your own natural remedies for your symptoms. If you're on any medication, as always, check for interactions.
Nap
Put on loud music and dance. Get your blood flowing
Check out home workouts on YouTube. Keeping active boosts your immune system and itll pass the time
Make stuff out of trash. Pinterest is full of diy crafts, my favourites are bird feeders out of bottles and planters out of bottles.
Get into your sewing pile and mend clothes
Embroider funky patches
If you're quarantined with family, chat to them. Suggest a family movie night or break out some board games. My husband refuses to play chess with me because I'm too good at it, I've never lost a chess game in my life
Chat to people on tumblr
Journal how you feel or vent to someone. Its frustrating being stuck inside
World build! Make maps of imagined places
Upcycle your clothes and make them look cooler
Make a bucket list
That's all the suggestions I have for now. If anyone is interested in more recommendations for books/movies/shows/stuff to learn, let me know!
Please, look after your mental as well as your physical health. Stay in touch with people, we need togetherness in these times, not isolation. Stay safe, stay healthyâĽď¸
my masterlist of 'how to lifeâ tips
Cleaning & Tidying
Make your bed in the morning. It takes seconds, and itâs worth it.
Reset to zero each morning.Â
Use the UFYH 20/10 system for clearing your shit.Â
Get a reed diffuser and stick it on your windowsill.Â
Have a âdrop-zoneâ box where you dump anything and everything. At the beginning/end of the day, clear it out and put that shit away.
Roll your clothes, donât fold them - or fold them vertically.
Automate your chores. Have a cleaning schedule and assign 15mins daily to do whatever cleaning tasks are set for that day. Set a timer and do it - once the timer is up, finish the task youâre on and leave it for the day.Â
Fold your clothes straight out of the tumble dryer (if you use one), whilst theyâre still warm. This minimises creases and eliminates the need for ironing.Â
Clean your footwear regularly and youâll feel like a champ.Â
Organisation & Productivity
Learn from Eisenhowerâs Importance/Urgency matrix.Â
Try out the two-minute rule and the Pomodoro technique.
Use. A. Planner. (Or Google Calendar, if thatâs more your thing.)
Try bullet journalling.
Keep a notebook/journal/commonplace book to dump your brain contents in on the regular.Â
Set morning alarms at two-minute intervals rather than five, and stick your alarm on the other side of the room. Itâs brutal, but it works.Â
Set three main goals each day, with one of them being your #1 priority. Donât overload your to-do list or youâll hit overload paralysis and procrastinate.Â
If youâre in a slump, however, donât be afraid to put things like âshowerâ on your to do list - that may be a big enough goal in itself, and thatâs okay.Â
Have a physical inbox - a tray, a folder, whatever. If you get a piece of paper, stick it in there and sort through it at the end of the week.
Consider utilising the GTD System, or a variation of it.
Try timeboxing.Â
Have a morning routine, and guard that quiet time ferociously.Â
Save interesting-looking shit to instapaper. Have a set time where you read through the stuff you saved to instapaper and save the shit that you like from instapaper to evernote (or bookmark it properly).Â
During your working hours, put on your footwear, even if youâre sat on your bed. (Why?)
Have a folder for all your important documents and letters, organised by topic (e.g. medical, bank, university, work, identification). At the front of this folder, have a sheet of paper with all the key information written on it, such as your GPâs details, your passport details, driving licence details, bank account number, insurance number(s), and so on.Â
Try using StayFocusd and RescueTime (or similar apps/extensions). (I promise, youâll find that youâre not as busy as you think you are.)
Schedule working time and down time alike, in the balance that works for you.Â
Money
Have. A. God. Damn. Budget.Â
Use a money tracker like toshl, mint, or splitwise. Enter all expenses asap! (You will forget, otherwise.)
Have a âmoney dateâ each week, where you sort through your finances from the past seven days and then add it to a spreadsheet. This will help you identify your spending patterns and whether your budget is actually working or not.Â
Pack your own frickinâ lunch like a grown-up and stop buying so many takeaway coffees. Keep snacks in your bag.Â
Go to your bank and take out ÂŁ100 in ÂŁ1 coins (or w/e your currency is). That shit will come in useful for all kinds of things and youâll never be short on change for the bus or the laundry.Â
Food & Cooking
Know how to cook the basics: a starch, a protein, a vegetable, and a sauce.
Simple, one-pot meals (âa grain, a green, and a beanâ) are a godsend.Â
Dried porcini mushrooms make a fantastic stock to cook with.Â
Batch cook and freeze. Make your own âmicrowave mealsâ.Â
Buy dried goods to save money - rice and beans are a pittance. (Remember to soak dried beans first, though!)Â
Consider Meatless Mondays; itâs healthier, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly.
Learn which fruits and vegetables are cheapest at your store, and build a standard weekly menu around those. (Also remember that frozen vegetables are cheap and healthy.)Â
Learn seasoning combinations. Different seasoning, even with the exact same ingredients, can make a dish seem completely new.Â
Donât buy shit for a one-off recipe, especially if you wonât use it all. If you really want to try out a recipe, see if a friend would be interested in making it with you, then pool for the expenses.Â
Make your own goddamned pasta sauce. Jamie Oliver has a decent recipe here, but the beauty of tomato sauce is that you can totally wing it and adapt the fuck out of it.Â
Misc
Have a stock email-writing format.Â
Want to start running, but find it boring? Try Zombies, Run!.Â
Keep a goddamn first aid kit and learn how to use it.Â
Know your OTC pain relief.Â
Update your CV regularly.Â
Keep a selection of stamps and standard envelopes for unexpected posting needs. (It happens more regularly than you would think!)Â
Some final words of advice:
Organisation is not a goal in itself, it is a tool. Donât get caught up in the illusion of productivity and get distracted from the actual task at hand.Â
Routines and habits will help you. Trust in them.
You have the potential to be an organised and productive person, just as much as anybody else. It just takes practice.Â
!!
I got 1 task done today. I emptied the big trash can in my bedroom. That's one less fork to deal with.
I have severe executive dysfunction. I've been dealing with it by having myself do one small task a day. So far it's helped a lot. By doing it this way my brain doesn't freak out trying to tackle everything at once.
I got my inspiration for it from this Donald Duck comic:
Oh my God this is so fucking wholesome
autumnal reminders to self:
be kind to others, flowers, and yourself. it is a season of change for us all
work hard at what matters, and all else will follow
find your roots & let them ground you
as the trees prepare to rest, to settle deeply into themselves, so too should you. let go of that which is not serving you and lay yourself down to a deep, seasons-long, extended meditation
everything has its season. everything has its season.
every time you warm your feet in slippers, socks, and baths, feel that warmth stretch its sleepy little arms in your heart, too
taste the words you read. savour them. make literature-based vocabulary lists and revisit them with every hot cup of morning coffee
let out deep breaths that sounds like the wind ghosting down your chimney, through your attic, past your window
take a minute to stand in every downpour that catches you and feel very damp, very cold, and very wondrously, magically alive
sink breathlessly into relationships that give you warm, you-are-so-thoroughly-loved shivers: with lovers, friends, family, and yourself
The age of lip fillers nosejob lash extensions re-sculpting face and body makeup laser hair removal spray tans luxurious and time consuming skincare dangerous diets makes us all look the same all the while making us believe thatâs what a woman should look like.Â
Affirmations
1. I see love as the only foundation that will sustain me in times of lack and times of plenty
2. I choose collective well-being over individual profit
3. I work off attempts by others to pit me against members of my community
4. I make it a priority to speak warmly, tenderly to others as well as myself
5. I live consciously, I accept myself, I am responsible, I am assertive, I live purposefully and I prioritize my personal integrity
6. I feed my self-esteem by caring for my body
7. I seek support from my therapist as well as my loving and supportive friends, family members and every member of my community
8. I refuse mindless consumption provided by any media: social media, television or writings
9. I engage in positive thinking
10. I learn to read and write
11. I train my critical thinking in the best way I can
How to Get Over Past Mistakes
1. Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes, does things wrongs, and has moments of regret. There are no perfect people out there. In that sense, you are just the same as everybody else.
2. Remind yourself that âthat was then, and this is nowâ. You canât turn back the clocks and change what you did, but you can be a different person in the future.
3. Allow yourself to experience and name the feelings you are struggling with (regret, guilt, shame, disappointment, embarrassment, sadness, etc.) â then make the decision to let those feelings go. In the end, itâs unhealthy to become attached to them.
4. Ask yourself what you can learn from the situation. What would you do differently if you found yourself in that situation again? How can it change the person you are now (so that you feel better about yourself)?
5. Recognise that failings and mistakes are part of the growth process. Itâs inevitable that youâll encounter obstacles, challenges and failures throughout life. Donât let that stop you from really living life.
6. Remind yourself that âit was what you did, itâs not who you are.â Donât allow any single event or experience to define you. You are more than â so donât let that become your identity, or your destiny.
7. Give yourself the gift of a new day and a new start. Forgive yourself, let go of the past, and with confidence move on with your life.
the 7 râs of sustainability
1. refuse - if you donât need it, refuse it. say no to flyers, plastic bags, straws, plastic cutlery etc. invest in a reusable water bottle, slow down and eat in to avoid takeaway containers, make your daily tea or coffee at home and take bags with you when you go shopping
2. reduce - can you cut down on how much you are using? buy food in bulk, eat less meat, donât buy clothes just because theyâre on sale. finding lots of little ways to reduce what you are consuming can have a big impact
3. reuse - can you reuse the product or parts of the product for another purpose? reuse empty glass jars to store food or turn old clothes into cleaning rags
4. repair - if itâs broken try and fix it before you throw it away and buy a new one
5. rot - if you canât reuse or repair something made of natural materials, compost it. donât send it to landfill because it canât decompose buried under other rubbish, the greenhouse gases will just collect
6. recycle - send materials like cardboard and glass off to be chemically repurposed into new products. this process is resource intensive so it is best to reduce your recycling as much as possible, but recycling is always better than sending things to landfill.
7. rethink - if you canât do any of the above then itâs time to rethink whether you actually need the product. find sustainable alternativesÂ
Sometimes you just eat too much junk, talk too much, say things you should not have said, treat other people poorly (even though you do not intend to do so), think negatively about yourself and others, cry for no reason, get angry at the world and cannot be there for someone else because you are just too busy with fighting your own battle. And you know what? This is absolutely okay. None of these things take away your progress, your worth or the fact that you are a loveable human being. Yes, it happens, we mess up. And that is completely normal. You need to love yourself especially during the hard times; I know I do.
There is nothing inherently stupid or childish about being positive or spiritual. Itâs not at all naive. What I have learned and seen for myself is that it is often the knowledge of the great breadth of suffering in this world that drives people to spread light, not the ignoring of it. You look right into the darkness and choose to light a match.
Things to do when you are sad
- look at pictures of cows
- If there are farms around you drive around and look at the horses and cows and goats and sheep and-
- eat a spoonful of ya local honey đŻ
- run through a green field
- if you donât have a green field buy yourself your favorite flowers
- Talk to your plants if you have any (theyâre great listeners!)
- Try to make your own jam/preserves and make yourself a fancy little breakfast/lunch
- start a hobby like knitting or sewing
- call your favorite family member
- look for ladybugs

Happy New Year! Iâm starting the year by keeping track of all the habits I want to develop and maintain this year. One of my main goals is to practice Japanese everyday. hey I recently went through a very messy friend breakup with my three girls who were my closest friends for like two years. I still have to see them in nearly all of my classes and sit with them at lunch. theyâre also friendly with my other friends. I really donât think our relationship is repairable. Iâm struggling with really bad anxiety over it but I donât know how to solve this.
Just from personal experience, I know how much losing friendships hurts, and I can promise you that youâre going to be okay!!!! Yeah, it can make your classes super hard because youâre worried about the situations it might bring up - but overthinking the âwhat ifsâ might make you feel worse! Iâm gonna come up with a couple ideas that might help, and if any other mods wanna give advice that would be cute too!  - Find someone you CAN talk to at school, even if itâs someone away from the adjacent friends you have. If you do any clubs/societies after class, see if thereâs anyone you can talk to! Or someone you sit next to in class, and bring up conversations with them! It might make class feel a little less intimidating.
 - You could try and talk to your other friends, and maybe get some insight into whatâs going on? Having a mid-ground between you and your ex-friends could possibly bridge a gap, and make things a little easier to deal with!
 - Have someone online you can talk to after class! You can message me, or if youâve got other friends on tumblr or elsewhere, that might help! also I know there are discord servers for support groups n stuff, and that could be something nice!!!!
 - Your anxiety doesnât control you, it affects you! It might affect you in a lot of ways, but in the future, youâll grow and youâll learn, and youâll become the person youâve always wanted to be. Feeling anxious in class still isnât great though. If you have good teachers, you could always talk to them, and see if you can arrange a situation where if you feel uncomfortable, you say âCan I go to the toilet?â and youâre allowed a 10/15 minute breather away from the situation. It might help you get your brain focused and less panicky!
 - Find your goals for the future. (I KNOW THIS IS HARD! BUT HEAR ME OUT!!!) Recently, I realised what I want to achieve in my future. Itâs only small stuff (like writing a book of short stories, going into teaching to make a difference, etc), but it really helps me focus more in class because Iâve got a higher motivation going on. It still doesnât solve everything, but having a life outside of school and outside of the immediate classroom environment kinda helps a little! If you need anything, message us! Breaking up with friends can be hard, especially when itâs messy. But you will heal, and everything will feel okay again, I promise. đ- Steph [dustblush]Â
