I'm reading the scriptwriters' guide for TOS and it's cracking me up in many places. It's so obvious that, from the very beginning, they were already aware of so many of the issues people complain about today.

First there's a multiple choice quiz, what's wrong with this scene?

Answer: C! Absolutely Kirk would not hug the yeoman at this point! That's unprofessional!

The Prime Directive gets explained. As I keep telling people, it's not never broken, it's just supposed to only be broken for very good reasons.

For people wondering how to write a stardate: you make up some numbers!

No saluting! Yes optimism!

There is so much "think of the budget" in here. Yes you can use the shuttle bay but only if it's relevant, we have to use miniatures. Yes you can have a space suit but please don't ask for zero gravity. And where aliens are concerned, you can have some makeup but please focus on the interior differences not just tentacles!

Honestly I think Spock is a better alien than, say, Jabba the Hutt, because as human as he looks, he's much more different on the inside. People like to dismiss Star Trek aliens as "forehead of the week" but it's kind of a stage shorthand for "we're about to discover a unique culture, these people are different from you in ways you might not expect."

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.

It's good old fashioned characterization practice when confronted with "he would not fucking say that" to go "under what circumstances WOULD he say that?" And then go "and how would he get into those circumstances?" And boom. You have a MUCH more solid character.

It's also a fun magic trick as a writer to write a guy so well you get people foaming at the mouth on the comments going "HE WOULD NOT SAY THAT BUT HE *DOES* AND IT *MAKES SENSE* FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU!!!"

I honestly think relationships in general would be healthier, in general, if we didn’t believe they should always, by default, last forever.

When the default is “forever” and shorter relationships are seen as a failure, we miss out on a lot. We stay in relationships that don’t work because they’re not “bad enough” to leave, as though not wanting the relationship anymore isn’t a good enough reason. We deny ourselves happy memories, saying “If it doesn’t work now, our love then wasn’t real.” We pass on relationships we know would be short, because if it doesn’t last forever, what’s the point in joy in the moment?

An ending isn’t a failure. It’s an ending. Most relationships have them. What would our relationships be like if we stopped focusing on our fear of endings and started focusing on what we - and our friends, partners, and families - need and want right now?

one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.

Personally, I abstain from all music in order to keep my hands clean but really music should just be illegal outright to protect musicians from abuse.
