@copperbadge @naamahdarling et al I have just found out about cross stitching temperature charts, as in repeating pattern (stars, leaves, etc.) with the colors = daily temperature highs and lows.

i am foaming at the mouth. never been more tempted to return to stitchery

Oh yes! I have a friend who did it for the Panthers hockey win-lose-draw season last year, and I know various people who have done it for other stuff I can't recall off the top of my head.

I'm not a stringwitch (can't knit or crochet, I've tried, it's just not within me) but it looks like a super cool idea. I've thought about doing some kind of cross-stitch version where you just do lines of colors, but I have so many other projects...

Happy Desert Bus Week, everyone! Desert Bus for Hope 2025 starts this Friday, and I'm happy to have been able to participate in the craftalong again.

This year's project is a tribute to Qwerpline, one of my favorite of LoadingReadyRun's projects. Go check it out - but warning, it has made me nearly drive off the road from laughing more than once, so caution is encouraged if you listen in the car.

This quilt - "QWLTLine: A Tribute to Nsburg" will be up for silent auction starting Thursday November 20 at 6pm. Go check it out! And while you're there, go check out all the other amazing raffles and auctions, or just watch a bit, it's a great time.

Everyone meet my newest quilt, Frank the Protest Frog

Details:

Obviously inspired by the Portland protest frog, and subsequent "don't obey" posters that showed up downtown

The frog is my design - the mouth is paper pieced, the dark green and smaller black/white circles are applique, and everything else is traditionally pieced, including the circles for the eyes, because I enjoy suffering apparently

The lettering is "Say Something" by QuiltByNight designs, sized up by 275%. I've used the lettering in a couple projects now and it's a really great basic lettering - easy to work with, rescalable, and very readable, I highly recommend it.

His full name is Franklin N. Tifa

"Frank" is because I didn't want to buy much for the project - I bought the red fabric but everything else is from my stash - and I had just barely enough green so he is heavily franken-pieced. The batting is also pieced together scraps.

I haven't decided what the N stands for. Possibly Norbert, which seems like a good name for a frog.

Frank is just under 3'x4' - big enough to be very readable/visible, but small enough to be easily toted to a protest.

In my defense, the fifth was accidental, I was at the thrift store looking for a table to put the third on and they had a lovely sewing machine table that was the perfect size with the old machine still inside for 20 bucks. I don't even know if it works. But I now own five sewing machines.

Machines you don't use/broken machines/antiques used for decor count, as long as they were functional sewing machines at one point. Sergers/longarms/etc. definitely count.

I’m so proud of myself this week, I was working on a pair of pants and realized they were the wrong size, and I did NOT yeet them into the bad project bin, and I DID take them apart and fix them and now I have a nice pair of pants.

And now for something completely different…

I finally got around to replacing my garden gate, which has been broken and too dry-rotted to fix for over a year now.

Left: the old gate; note the dead rosemary plant, which is the only thing holding it shut, since the latch isn't attached; the piece of wood sitting on top keeping it shut the other direction; and some slightly bent, slightly rusty hinges. Not pictured: the fact that the "frame" is really just a "z" shape of wood and has no vertical bracing whatsoever; the thoughts and prayers that are the only thing holding it up

My wife and I absolutely love the Gaia quilt you put up for charity. We looked at our budget and talked about bidding as much as $1500, but by the time we looked at the website it was over $3000. So good for charity I guess, but now we're looking at learning to quilt just so we can recreate your work.

My question is: Would you be up for sharing/selling the pattern? It's an amazing piece and we love the Horizon games, and we'd love to have it in our home.

Thank you so much! I am also surprised it went for so much (in a very good way). Desert Bus is painful that way, I also had a couple items I wanted to bid on but went way past my budget. At least it's more money For The Children!

Unfortunately I don't really have a pattern to share. The individual logos are paper pieced, but I don't feel comfortable sharing them; they have some issues that had to be fixed on the fly and aren't labeled or particularly coherent. And the quilt as a whole doesn't have a pattern at all, I cut/pieced fabric to fit the space as needed.

My quilting process is a bit of a freeform disaster; it works for me (with a lot of swearing) but it's not great for sharing. Sorry I can't help more!
