Stranger things spoilers:
My first issue is, where was Robin and Vickie's scene at Enzos?? Joyce and Hopper got theirs.
And if Robin and Vickie had gotten their ending I might have excused the absolute poor choice to end Will's story with a nameless dude at a bar... when he's the most romantic of them all. (I would think it was wrong nontheless but at least there would've been a queer couple getting space in the end)
I was prepared for Byler not to happen but like... they still needed closure as friends. They needed a proper one on one where Mike asks if he was the crush and perhaps says that he had an inkling and that's why he freaked out in California and he's sorry for that. Just friends, but like... actually best friends, fleshed out. Then the coming out scene would have been sort of fine. Now it all just falls flat. Just something they needed to get out of the way.
Or even if Mike's reasons for California kept being just implied, we needed something more. That was so fast and nonchalant?
They built so much around Will and Mike's friendship and did nothing with it at the end.
Why was Mike's most traumatic memory only thinking he lost Eleven that first time and not ALSO seeing his best friend screaming, possessed and in pain in a hospital bed? Seeing his mother mauled almost to death? There were more traumas than just "goodbye Mike". It fell So Flat.
I did like the scene with Mike and Eleven that showed they still loved eachother... I like them together too, but if they were gonna break up Mileven anyway why couldn't they also have given Byler an open to interpretation ending? Like have them have an intimate moment in the basement at the end where they hug or hold hands? And Mike repeat what Hopper said about her wanting him to be happy?
At least play into their friendship here.
Or they could've given Mileven a happy ending. I would've been fine with that.
I would have also enjoyed it if they had introduced a love interest for Will in season 4 which could've made the "Mike was just my Tammy" make a little more sense. Now they just invalidated Will's feelings. Like... once more gay men are incapable of anything past physical attraction and hook up culture??
I also feel like they relied on people knowing the plot of "the first shadow" and you can't do that. You need to explain it in the tv-show too because they are separate medias.
Sidenote: I really did enjoy Dustin doing what Eddie always wanted at his graduation, but I don't think many people even remembered that about Eddie...
I also love that Lumax is standing strong. They are my favourites and feel very natural.
I still like it, I WANT to like it, but there are so many lose threads I don't feel fulfilled. I did like the ending with the DnD session, I just wish we would've had more heart leading up to it. Where was the heart? And why didn't Mike get a happy ending? And why did NO ONE of consequence die? That also feels a little cheap.
I think they introduced too many characters and couldn't give them all the space they deserved.
After all this time I wish I was fulfilled...
