People from middle and upper middle class can say these things and get away. People who don’t know what starting capital is can say these things. People who literally don’t know what its like to have nothing or to live in poverty can say these things.

You can’t follow your dreams without some start up cash from somewhere. And most people don’t have that. Like if money was no object and people could just ~live their dreams~ then why are there children starving in 1st world nations

And internet for the laptop. And electricity. And plumbing. And heat. And possibly has for your car. Oh and tabs and emissions if you have a car. Travel if you live away from family/friends or have a job that requires it but doesn’t pay for it.

And, hm, what else?

Oh yeah!

Medications. Doctor appointments. Replacement for things like canes and wheelchairs if they break and your insurance doesn’t cover it (oh, and if you’re self employed, you have to pay for insurance, too).

Not only is this super classist, it’s ableist as fuck.

I like how it goes from “you like knitting?” to “own a yarn shop!” like that’s something people can just do.

Between business licenses and registration, initial inventory, deposit and up-front payments for the commercial property lease, promotion and branding, and other startup costs, you’re looking at a minimum six-figure investment - and that’s assuming you already have the necessary contacts and skills to handle a small business startup all on your lonesome and can safely afford to gamble on pissing those six figures down the toilet when faced with the reality that two-thirds of small business startups fail within the first two years.

You know who can do all that?

People who already have money.

Also, you dont have to be making money off the things you love for them to be worth doing. This push to monetize every hobby isn’t healthy. And it’s a great way to end up hating what you used to love.

Also, the fact you like knitting is no guarantee you’d enjoy doing all the stuff you’d need to do to run a yarn shop: dealing with customers (even when they’re being rude or stupid), dealing with employees and inventory and vendors and all of that? I like knitting, but none of those things are my idea of a good time.

The fact that the person who made this thinks “enjoys knitting” is the same thing as “enjoys running a yarn shop” alone is enough of a missed point.

If you’re spending all day running a yarn shop, then you’re SPENDING ALL DAY RUNNING A YARN SHOP, not spending all day KNITTING.

And anyone who thinks that anyone can make a living off of *just* selling their knitting hasn’t been paying attention to how undervalued most handicrafts have become in the last fifty years, to the tune of *long-time established places that once turned a profit off of these things* have had to close shop left and right over the past couple decades. Sometimes what you love simply will not make a good career, for a huge variety of reasons. And that’s OKAY.

Consider letting your hobbies just be your hobbies. Sell what you make on the side if you want, transfer into doing it full-time if it turns out it turns out to be sustainable to do so, but yeah, there’s no way faster to grow to hate something than by failing to make a career out of it. Simply following your passion DOES NOT GUARANTEE you a truly joyful life. You have to know how to balance keeping that thing you’re passionate about as part of your life while dealing with all of life’s OTHER requirements, including the ones that currently require making enough money to feed and house yourself. Sometimes that turns out to be a lovely venn diagram with a lot of overlap- but sometimes they’re mutually exclusive. It’s certainly worth exploring, if you’ve got the ability (time, funding, health) to do so, but sometimes your parents telling you “this is a bad idea” is because what you’re thinking of doing is truly a bad idea, not because they’re assholes or because they don’t want you to succeed. TL;DR - Don’t abandon your passion in life, but don’t assume you can make a living doing nothing but it, either. If you can? AWESOME. If you can’t? IT ISN’T THE END OF THE WORLD. And take the advice that all success requires is hard work and passion with a HUGE grain of salt. * …Also? Five years down the line, it might be different. Maybe current circumstances mean what you want to do isn’t realistic now, but in five or ten years, things will have changed enough that you absolutely can monetize the fuck out of the thing you love doing, if that’s truly what you want to do with it. You never have to give up on what you love, but sometimes the best thing you can do is stick it on a backburner and let it simmer until the whole meal is ready.

A fire broke out at the revered Al-Aqsa Mosque compound's Marwani Prayer Room in Jerusalem just as flames ravaged the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, built 1035 C.E (the first recorded holy building on the site built in 705 C.E) has also been a victim of fire today as the Notre Dame in Paris burns.
