One time when I was like three years old I was laying in my mom’s bed, and I don’t remember what we were talking about except I was being fussy about having to do something, and just like whenever I was being like that she asked, “are you trying to pick a fight?”

And I didn’t really know what that meant, only that I always said no, but for some reason or another I was very annoyed and a fight sounded pretty good so for the first time ever I said “yes”

And I don’t know what I was expecting to happen, but I remember my mom just going “Okay, then. Let’s fight. What do you want to fight about?”

And I remember it occurring to me all of a sudden that the onus was on me to generate the energy to pick something to be mad about, and wishing she’d just do something worth fighting FOR me, but she just went, “I’m not the one who wants to fight. If you want to fight, you have to pick something to fight about”

and I just went ugh. Never mind, that’s too much work. So said “I don’t wanna fight actually, I’m just cranky” and she told me “okay well just say that next time” and in hindsight that was actually probably a very important formative experience

“Yes, I do. I think space is wonderful. Did you know that most of the first helpers for NASA were African American women?” Hen asked.

“No way!” Karen exclaimed, her eyes wide. “Really, Hen?”

“They were like computers for the astronauts of that time. Look it up, you’ll see.” Hen smiled, nodding.

the sun has still yet to rise when buck was already up, quietly getting ready before he woke his sister up– already knowing maddie will not be impressed with how early he is waking her up. it’s her fault though for letting him control a whole day, he has so much to show her, they have so much to do. he fixed the couch– also known as his temporary bed because there is no way he is letting maddie sleep on the couch after not seeing her for how long, before moving over to wake the older buckley up. there was no hesitation in the way he opened the door, turned the light on, and jumped on the mattress all within three seconds. “maddie, wake up– wake up maddie, are you awake yet ? c’mon, wake up, mads, hey maddie,” he continued shaking both her and the mattress as he did it.

maddie sighed heavily. she tried and failed to go to sleep before midnight, but now it was almost seven am and buck was waking her up. she had regrets, okay? a lot of them. "buck," she groaned out. "why are you waking me up at --- shit, buck. it's not even seven am yet!" she bemoaned.

For clarification's sake, is this true everywhere? I ask because I know that different countries have different quality home electricity provision; American home electricity Ain't Great compared with most of Europe, for example. In Wales I have never heard of this being a Thing, but our electricity comes in 240V flavour, so possibly the higher current naturally avoids this issue?

My British husband (not an electrician but electrician-adjacent) says yes this is true in the UK as well - anything that uses a lot of power should be plugged directly into the wall rather than an extension lead
