ever wonder how many things you missed out on in life cause your parents said ‘no’?
"Don't take it personally" How would you like me to take it then? Professionally? Romantically? Academically?
I’ve finally sat down to write this down. Can’t visit the new year without making some more fuss about copy of a copy of a copy.
“It’s an old curse, dreamers divin’ head first Broken beaks and dead birds Can’t get through the glass”
The song starts with a dig at the rom coms, concept of love at first sight, romanticizing falling for someone without thinking far ahead; without thinking about the consequences. This is eerily compared with the dead birds who ended up with broken beaks, dead because they were trying to get through the glass- a dead end; indicating that they tried multiple times looking at the illusion of an escape so much that they ended up breaking their bones and beaks; ended up dying.
Just before the livestream I was watching willow mv that had come out on the previous day. In willow mv the string that guides talylor throughout, leads baby taylor sitting with her young love in a tent to a glass closet. A literal closet. She’s all grown up, entering through a curtain. she doesn’t know what’s beyond that curtain and gets trapped inside the glass closet. (later taylor gets to escape though). Now it could be interpreted in many ways - glass closet in terms of lgbtq+, entering something without knowing what it means fully - a contract, a relationship, a commitment.
The coacoac opens with criticizing the glorification of love at first sight, falling quick and hard too soon, entering a commitment with a blind courage when we really don’t know what lies ahead, calls it an old curse. This kind of feels like a same concept with different yet similar view on human emotions and consequences of blind faith which we seem to have when we are young and innocent. The courage and tireless strength to push back.
“There’s no use cryin’ over spilled blood Carin’ only kills love A kiss won’t bring it back”
The following verse directly points towards love, with dejected words as if they are said by someone who was young and naïve in the beginning but has now learned the bitter life lessons. That there is no use of your crying over something that’s gone, caring too much resulted in the partner breaking their relationship, killed their love. A kiss could refer to a big romantic gesture, something like a last attempt to save what they had but the singer says no it won’t bring back what they had; it won’t be the same.
“I know that the first blow hits you cold”
The singer understands that the first betrayal of love, first betrayal by someone who entered into a commitment with you (in terms of love, friendship, business – could be interpreted in so many ways ahhh) will hit us the hardest as he has experienced.
“Young man, hush your crying, dry your tears away Nothing is original, there’s nothing left to say”
As soon as we hear young man hush your crying, we can catch up to the song’s set up. An older louis is singing to his younger self. He has learned the hard way so it’s kind of wary when he sings nothing it original, nothing left to say. He sounds resigned which could be taken as there is more to come, get strong, no more tears. This in contrast to the louis we have come to know in walls so uplifting, open, positive.
“You won’t be the first or be the last to bleed Every broken heart as far as your eye can see It’s a copy of a copy of a copy”
These lines try to give a feel of comfort, like saying you’re not alone. As a human I think we can muster the courage to accomplish anything but we just need assurance that we’re not alone, even in suffering knowing there is someone else in this world, just like us, going through the same will make us feel less alone; will muster strength. He sings every broken is the same and there are many – a copy of a copy of a copy.
Louis has taken a similar stance in just like you (2017) –
“every heart breaks the same, every tear leaves a stain, can I just be the same? Every heart breaks the same, every tear leaves a stain, let me be the same” – he went from asking anyone to understand that he is human too with same heart breaks and emotions to comforting himself, telling his younger self that he is not the only one, every broken heart is a copy of a copy of a copy so dry your tears in coacoac (2020).
“I can hear you, howlin’ ‘til your lungs hurt So let this be your comfort You’re not the only one, no In a strange way, all in this together Been this way forever, you’re not the only one”
In the second half of the song, he proceeds to sing to young louis that “yes I can hear you crying and shouting, calm down now you are not alone in this”. Everyone’s experiences are different, circumstances cannot be compared, yet in a strange way we’re all in this together and it has been that way since forever. So you really don’t have to feel that you are the only one with a broken heart. This is so similar to something louis has said before during just hold on promo, “don’t feel sorry for yourself, keep fighting, keep strong”. And he lives by this words after 4 years he finally was able to release his album.

u know what makes me cry..... that one van gogh quote about life changing for the better..... “many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. and it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘what do i care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ yes, evil often seems to surpass good. but then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. one morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. and so i must still have hope.” yeah..... Crying....
If you are going to have literally no criteria for being queer, then how can you say that anyone isn't? How can you refer to any person in any context as cis/straight?
If someone tells me they’re queer I believe them. If someone tells me they’re straight I believe them. This isn’t that hard
What so like a cis het allo person can just call themselves queer now?
What problem, exactly, are you so concerned about? I don’t know if you’ve noticed but queerness is still very much marginalized, it’s not as “trendy” as people try to act, and straight people aren’t tripping over themselves to call themselves queer. And if you’re worried about being “tricked” by “infiltrators”, like, you know those people can just say that they’re gay? Like they can lie? They’re not going to try and “sabotage” queer spaces by saying “hey I don’t have any marginalized orientations or identities but I’m still totally queer”, they’d just say “hey I’m super gay, love people of the same gender”
What, concretely, are you worried about happening? What’s the worst thing that could happen due to inclusivity? Because the worst things that can happen due to gatekeeping are very well-known, and I’m much more scared of that
It’s less that it’s trendy and more like, I like having my queer-only spaces. Also queer is a bad word. All our words are bad words. They aren’t oppressed, and for a cishetallo to use a slur as their identity feels a little demeaning to me. Like I dont hate them of course but the A was never for Ally . It’s not queer to be normal
Interacting with them is cool and having them at pride I’m not opposed to but as a person who’s queer it does feel like they’re kinda dressing it up
Im gonna be honest Ive never seen people like that but like, I’m allowed to not like it
I’m not going to distrust and exclude people because of a problem you made up. If someone tells me they’re queer, I believe them
Fuck of Im literally trans and asexual lol
We’ve reached the part of the discussion where the only defense left is “you’re not allowed to disagree with me, I have x identity”
I’m also trans and asexual and I agree with Pops wholeheartedly so it’s almost like that’s a shitty and useless way to conduct an argument or something
I’m also trans and asexual and I think people identifying as queer is great.
Don’t forget that being inclusive makes it a lot easier for people to question their own identities in the first place. Like, what does an exclusionary mindset mean for someone who isn’t sure what their identity is? Do you kick them out because they can’t confidently tell you they aren’t straight? What does that even accomplish? It just leaves that questioning person feeling terrible and rejected.
Literally every single “straight” person I’ve ever met who was like “:( Man, I wish I was queer. :( :( :(”
… was? And just took a while to figure themselves out?
People do not, as a general rule, do things that’ll make their lives harder and subject to more discrimination.
Honestly, who has the energy?
I’m a sucker for affection and someone who can’t keep their hands off of me

okay but them doing solo albums is an investment into the band’s longevity, not a red flag for a split. that this band did the touring together and everyday together and then went on a hiatus because they needed a break and came back closer but also spending less time together. that they just released an album named after their initials together. that since promoting youngblood 5sos has been adamant about how long and how far they want the band to go.
but also seeing their individual spotify playlists. knowing that they have similar tastes and influences but also all the ways those differ. it’s their different experiences and interests and strengths. that youngblood was eclectic and calm was step forward but still reflective of many opinions and tastes and artistry, that while that comes with all the producers and writers and people on the albums, it also reflects how much the band works to put the ideas of four people together. even the band has spoken on this.
by writing and releasing solo albums, they’re allowed to be individual artists with their own expression. their own sound and music and words and feelings going into an album to call their own. where the job of everyone else working on it is to enhance the stories and pictures they want to represent. it’s a freedom that they don’t completely get in the band bc the band is made of four artists. by focusing a lot of their individual stuff into solo work, they can better focus what they want to focus into the band.
and with that, the band is not the side project—the solo work is. that the four of them have more similarities in music than not. that artistically they have similar ideas and where they want to go. that they have a similar vision for what they want their music to do. but they already know they do well live together. they know how to play and perform and work together. what’s always been their struggle is cohesive writing. it’s always been about producing studio work and lyrics that reach the level they do as a live band.
like it’s their differing influences and interests in music that likely gave us an ashton solo album first and now a luke one next. that they need somewhere to channel all the things that don’t fit within 5sos so that they can better focus on what 5sos is. that solo work is them choosing the band and prioritizing the art they create within it by better understanding themselves as artist. that I wouldn’t be surprised if we get solo work from calum and michael in the future, too, but also wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t—especially from michael if the band chooses to return to their roots/earlier sound bc that’s within what music michael is influenced and interested in. but even then, there’s ways to differ and a necessity of self expression outside of the band. that this is also reflected in their wardrobes that are similar but not the same (constrasted with all the plaid and skinny jeans and holely shirts)
what 5sos has needed is better focus in their sound. to do that they need to cut back on the ideas going into it. changing management and labels will likely help that, but even then the band’s vision has to be cohesive as well. if they had stuck to just expression within the band, we’d continue to get the same music that works together but also… could be better? that youngblood was a phenomenal album but there are many ways the tracks diverge from each other. that calm was a good album but also very clearly split in half with tracks that just didn’t seem to completely fit on there or in the order presented. that the first two were also great but also far from something you couldn’t point a finger at and go “this dude listens to all time low”. and that’s fine. that makes sense. it takes time to learn who you are as an artist.
so that’s what they’re doing. that now that they seem to be at a spot of knowing who they are as people—with some better grasp and stability (presumingly from what they share) on their personal lives—they can focus on their artistry and who they are as artists. that through solo work they can individual explore their music so they can come back to the band and produce something cohesive bc all that’s left is to figure out how these four artists come together. to bring their individual experiences not as contrasting ideas but as different strengths to allow for balance and cohesion.
TL;DR: solo work isn’t going to spilt up the band, but rather the opposite. it’s going to be what strengthens the group and allows them to take their music within the band so much further.
being intuitive is just like... i don’t like this and no i will not elaborate
