Korrasami Week 2020

I was all excited to participate in Korrasami Week 2020.  But then half my state lit up like a fucking torch and the other half has air quality so poor we’re being told to stay indoors with the windows closed (and no one up here has A/C ‘cause we don’t usually need it).

So I guess what I’m saying is I’m going to write fics for the prompts.  They just probably won’t be posted this week. I’m too busy playing “is this a COVID cough or wildfire lung?” to use my brain right now.

Currently working on the next installment of Mischief and Mishaps.  Here’s a preview.  Spoiler alert: Asami’s thirsty.

Asami’s green eyes blatantly wandered over Korra’s body, pausing at her shoulders and arms.  “No,” she said, shifting her legs so her robe parted and bared one lean, pale thigh.  “I think the only thing you need to change is where you’re standing.  So get.  Over.  Here.”

Korra immediately went into motion and froze just as quickly.  “Wait, why are you telling me what to do?  Aren’t I supposed to be in charge?”

Asami leaned forward, grabbed Korra’s belt, and pulled her close.  She let her hands rest on Korra’s firm stomach and looked up, giving Korra an unobstructed view of her neck and cleavage.  “Of course you are, sweetie.  Now,” she said, leaning back and presenting her wrists once more, “lock me up, Avatar.”

With any luck, I’ll have it finished and posted later today.

You’ve got to understand that this was 2014. I’ve seen some younger lesbian, bi, and queer folks today going, “So what? They held hands. They didn’t even kiss.” Or people watching it for the first time, saying, “I don’t see what the big deal is. There wasn’t any build-up!” 

But the landscape of children’s TV was very different six years ago. Like, that moment when they looked into each other’s eyes in a beam of golden light was revolutionary. I was living in a house with other queer people and we ALL screamed and cried, just like this.

Korrasami paved the way for Steven Universe and She-Ra to do what they did in the following years. And, yes, those were leaps forward whereas this was a step. But I saw it on another post, and I’ll echo the sentiment: Korrasami walked so Catradora could sprint.

Same-sex marriage wasn’t legal in the US in 2014.

Not until 2016. Before that, the marriage was only recognized in a few states.

It might not seem like much now, but HOLY FUCK this moment in the finale was huge in 2014.

Legend of Korra was the first Western animated kids’ TV show to portray a same-sex relationship. Not only that, but with a lead character.

It was legendary in 2014 and will always be important in LGBTQ+ media history.

I will never forget watching this.  I had alarms set to make sure I’d be awake to watch the finale as soon as it was available.  This was such a big deal to me.  I lost my shit.  My sister was annoyed that I was going nuts.  I was almost in tears as I pointed out that there were no shows like LOK when I was a teenager.  I told her I didn’t know it when I was a teen, but I Korrasami is exactly what I needed at that time in my life.  And now, thanks to LOK, kids like me are finally starting to see themselves reflected in media.  My sister is straight and cis, but that’s what made it click for her, too.

I’m 90% certain the reason I’m single is that even if I found a real life version of Asami, I’d have to convince her to date me.  I mean, I have the muscles, but that’s about all I’ve got going for me right now.

Serious Avatar Essays

The current Avatar Renaissance is great because it’s bring in new fans and restarting old conversations.  I’ve done a rewatch of ATLA and LOK at least once a year since the shows aired, but I’ve been doing it in a vacuum.  Now, some friends of mine have gotten hooked by the franchise and I have the absolute pleasure of reliving that first-viewing experience through them.  I appreciate that.  I love it.  It’s exciting, and it’s encouraged me to reengage with a fandom from which I’ve distanced myself.

I recently read some comments left on She Is Limitless, a Legend of Korra fanfic I posted several years ago.  The fic was a way for me voice some of my thoughts regarding the spiritual aspects of the show and it seems like it resonated with a few people.  I’d like to continue those conversations, and I think I’m going to try to do more of that here on Tumblr since the Facebook groups I’ve found are mostly dumpster fires.

So with that said, know from here on out that this blog will not only contain serious spoilers for Legend of Korra, but for the entire Avatar universe.  That includes A:TLA, the comics, and the novels (ohmigod, I have such a nerd boner for F.C. Yee these days).  I’ll do my best to apply spoiler tags whenever necessary, but consider yourself warned!
