Like looking at the ancient scriptures
after eight years, I finally updated my huge Historical Fashion Reference & Resources Doc! Now in the form of a MUCH more easily updated Google Doc with better organization, refreshed links, and five more pages of books and online resources.
I know tumblr hates links, but it’s worth it for a doc that I can now update with far more regularity going forward! RIP to the original, you did your duty for far longer than you should have. 😔🙏🏼
Idk I’m getting tired of emails that say “OMG THIS PRODUCT IS SO CHEAP!!!” Instead of “this product is so well made and it will last you several years to come!!”
Preach!!
Clothes are so flimsy now-a-days they’re practically see-through and they can’t handle washing more than like 20 times before they’re ruined. Same with vehicles, same with phones, same with basically everything now. Everything is flimsier and more breakable…
Everything is made as cheaply as possible so that the company can save 1/8 of a penny producing it. That pads the profit margin numbers and buys the CEO a new yacht because stock prices go up slightly for a few days, which makes millionaires buying stocks happy. And that’s all a company cares about. Fuck 30, 10, or even 2 years down the road! They can make a fast buck today.
Longevity, both in products and in corporate thinking, is a critically endangered idea.
You’re 100% correct on all of this. Tbh when I made this post I should have added these, but I want to add them now at least to curb some despair. Because some manufacturers are just as fed up as we are!!
Buy Me Once is a website that sells products that, uh, you only have to buy once. They have razors, duvets, kitchenwear, hosiery, gardening tools—all that are designed to last as long as physically possible. Hell, they have a smartphone ($200, 4 year warranty) and a VACUUM, both made to never be replaced. A lot of these things are also self-serviceable (looking at you Apple).
There are other sites out there like this, but this is the one I know is reputable. There are also some clothing companies like Eddie Bauer, Uniqlo, LandsEnd, and Duluth Trading Post that all sell durable, reliable clothing. In Uniqlo’s case, they’re also recycling materials and creating innovative new ways to sew clothes, including just not sewing them at all.
So yes, the mainstream stores you see in the mall are USUALLY bad. But there are some out there that’re still working on improving and doing better all the time. The next issue we have to hurdle is money. Because how many of us can afford to buy an actual wool coat vs a synthetic something or other that’ll last two years?
Shopping for laptops fucking sucks ‘cause I don’t know shit about computers. I’ve never had a computer with a functional webcam or microphone or the ability to play computer games made later than 2005 or a speaker that could play anything loud enough to hear from more than a foot away. How the hell should I know what I want?!
wow that would be such useful advice if only desktop PCs were small and portable and did not require desk tops on which to place them and I could take them with me when I traveled
I know this is a haha funny post, but for anyone who needs it, here's a quick-and-dirty of what you're most likely going to see while shopping for a computer/laptop (w/Examples)!
Cores/Intel Cores (Ex. i3, i5, i9)= Processing Speed= how fast your internet and other programs run. More cores is better.
Hard [Disk] Drive(HDD)/Solid State Drive(SSD) (Ex. 250GB, 480GB, 2TB)= How much you can store on your computer (files and apps and programs). A Terabyte(TB) is 1,000 Gigabytes.
*HDD is cheaper and more storage while SSD is faster, more durable, and uses less energy.
Memory/RAM(Random Access Memory) (Ex. 4GB, 8GB, 16GB) = How many different things your computer can do At The Same Time.
Ex. A computer with 4GB of RAM will probably shit itself if you try to play a game with with the internet open.
Video/Graphics Cards (Ex. NVIDIA, Intel HD Graphics, AMD) = How much visual complexity your computer can handle without throwing a tantrum. Only important if you play video games, do digital art, or watch a lot of movies on your computer. (When you're watching a video and it pixelates and lags when the action stuff happens, that's a bad/small graphics card)
Also the “avoid refurbished computers” tip is dead wrong.
‘Refurbished’ means it’s been in a technician’s hands recently and can’t be sold as new. That’s it. That’s all. In the US the FTC makes it illegal to sell something new if it’s been sold to an end user, so by definition a lot of perfect, ready-to-go hardware must be ‘refurbished’ in order to sell it again, no matter the circumstances.
Reasons a machine might be a refurb:
- Customer bought the item, decided they didn’t like the color, and returned it
- Customer bought the item, couldn’t figure out how to turn it on, and returned it
- Retailer opened the box for some reason and lost some of what gets shipped inside (manuals, cables, charger) and returned it
- Company bought 100 computers but went out of business before they could be installed or used
- Customer got a replacement for a damaged computer under warranty, and the manufacturer fixed what was wrong with the old machine and is now selling it as a refurb
I HAVE PERSONALLY WITNESSED ALL OF THESE SCENARIOS
Bottom line: ‘refurbished’ hardware has been repaired, tested, cleaned, and renewed back to original specifications by a trained technician. If anything, it’s probably MORE reliable now that it’s been doubly-tested.
All responsibly refurbished equipment comes with a factory warranty... the only refurbs I would avoid are items sold ‘as-is’ without warranty. That’s dangerous unless you know what you’re doing, like buying stuff for parts.
A lot of my most reliable hardware -- servers, laptops, tablets -- were bought as refurbished goods at huge savings. When I go shopping for a new thing I always look at the refurbished options first.
tl;dr: Refurbished is great!
This helped me recently and you might need it as well :)
Absolutely not a new observation but i love that the toki pona word for animal, "soweli," is written like this

Ok, but if you’re an independent contractor in the US and this happens? Find a lawyer, because you might have just gotten a huge payday.
Your position was just referred to as employment. Independent contractors do not have employers; they do not have employment. Congrats, your contact at this company just provided evidence that you were illegally missclassified.
This contact is claiming that you have set hours you’re obligated to fulfill. Unless a work task can only be done at a set time for practical reasons (i.e. you’re an audio freelancer paid to support a live event that occurs at a particular time and requires a certain amount of pre-show setup), a company cannot set an independent contractor’s work hours. This is further evidence that you were missclassified.
The whole exchange establishes that the company is interpreting an employer-employee relationship rather than expecting a service. Discipline and potential for firing (you cannot fire an independent contractor; no longer purchasing their service is not equivalent) establish that this person views themselves as a manager. Independent contractors cannot have managers.
This one text exchange could:
Get you back pay for the full duration you’ve worked there, to bring you up to the compensation that an employee would have gotten
Get you back compensation for lost benefits that an employee would have gotten
Get you back pay for the additional self-employment taxes the company should have covered
Get the company to pay back taxes to the government
Get the company to hire everyone who performed a similar role, or face further penalties and fines
A win would encourage the rest of their missclassified workers to sue for the same, or give them leverage to demand a better deal
If the company is going to screw you over like that, may as well make them pay for it.
Since this is getting a lot of reblogs, here’s a federal source that can help you determine if you’re illegally classified as a contractor:
You can also file a form with the IRS to force the company to correct your classification (assuming you meet the criteria), without necessarily having to sue:
Learn how to determine whether a person providing a service to you is an employee or an independent contractor.
Keep in mind that this is just federal. Most states also prohibit missclassification as an independent contractor; and even if states have more lenient rules, companies still have to comply with this federal law. The rules have largely been bipartisan and existed for decades, so they’re common.
States also have an interest in having regulations about missclassification: it’s a significant loss of tax revenue. Your self employment tax does not fully equal what a company would have paid for you in payroll taxes.
A lawyer can help point you in the right direction if a company is currently missclassifying you.
Several years back I got into an argument about whether I was an IC or an employee. The office manager told me to call my lawyer if I wanted, but I did them one better.
I told the IRS. There is a form you can send in with your taxes if you believe you have been misclassified, and you only pay the taxes you should have been as an employee.
I won.
Now, it took 2 years for them to get to it BEFORE there was a pandemic, so … It’s a long process. But it doesn’t involve expensive lawyers, it doesn’t involve letting your manager know you are doing it, it just requires a packet of evidence like these texts (for me it was pictures of multiple warnings about uniforms, leaving the premises when I didn’t have appointments, how many hours I was expected to fill, etc)
Just look at those links and be sure because if you are wrong, you’ll be paying back taxes. But the IRS really really hates it when companies misclassify you, so bringing it to their attention is something they WILL look into.
hello. i have been Thinking
