05x07 - Hothead
Ken and Claire walk the beat discussing the potential loss of Rent Allowance from their wage. Claire suggests they'll get it back as wages. Ken points out that if it isn't specifically assigned as having an official purpose then they would be taxed on it and be worse off. He suggests she speak to Reg about it if she doesn't understand. "Nobody talks to Reg Hollis. Reg Hollis talks to you!" She laughs, insisting Reg must have trapped him into a discussion about it.
Tom and Bob mutter about Councillors coming to 'look' at the regularly overcrowded cells. "It's no good them coming to look at the problem. Any fool can look at the problem!" The prisoners are complaining about having to share cells. On top of that, Bob has to deal with electricians in the already busy custody and toothache. Tom suggests his dentist; as long as he doesn't mind his habit of going for the wrong tooth! Bob still makes an appointment for 2pm.
Viv brings in 2 schoolgirls she found at a lorry park chatting up drivers to hitch a lift to Manchester. Bob asks them why they wanted to go to Manchester. One snootily tells him they were trying to get to a Bros concert - despite not having tickets. Bob rolls his eyes and orders them to empty their pockets.
A local greengrocer is very proud of the "15 pounds!" padlock he's put on his back gate to protect his business. He tells Ken to 'give it a real test' and encourages him repeatedly when he tries to politely refuse. Ken 'gives it a real test' and puts his shoulder to the gate. The rotten wood gives way and he falls flat on his face! Norman won't hear that it was pointless putting a strong lock on a gate that was rotten and he takes Ken's number to report him.
Claire happens upon a brawl outside a local factory. The boss is being ordered to 'come clean' or face a pasting from a group of pissed-off employees who suspect he's trying to lay them off.
One of the schoolgirls refuses to believe she was putting herself and her friend in danger and insists she knows her way around. The other bursts into tears when Bob points out that she could have been raped, assaulted or killed and no one would know where they were. All they had with them was their school uniforms, £6 and lipstick. The quiet one begs them not to tell her parents.
Viv is unnerved to see - and hear - Bob facing off with an angry suspect in one of the overcrowded cells. She grabs his arm in fear that he was about to assault the man. Bob calms down and tells her that it's alright but warns the suspect to keep his mouth closed and stop winding people up.
Claire attempts to reason with the workers. She's massively outnumbered when more staff members pour out of the factory and surround them. Claire warns them to get off the street after a couple of them turn on her. The one who appears to be in charge, Nobby Briggs, calms them down and says Claire is right and that they'll take it into the man's office whilst they wait for a call from the accountant.
A woman approaches Ken and asks him for help to get back into her car whilst another approaches Claire and tells her that her son grabbed her by her throat because she didn't clean his shoes and she's frightened. Claire tells her to report it to the station because she has to go deal with the men from the factory as the argument has spilt back out on the street. Claire asks for backup from another officer, explaining that she and Ken have been separated.
Alec tries to get Ken to go help Claire but he's now surrounded by the woman and two other elderly women who keep insisting that he should help the woman get into her car. He tells her to head 2 streets away to a local garage to get someone to help her that way as he can't. They won't take no for an answer!
Claire keeps trying to get control of the situation. The men have locked the boss out of the factory. He is trying to force his way back in and all involved are ignoring Claire's demands for them all to move away from the gates. The workers get bored of the argument and move back into the factory. The boss panics that they'll trash it and runs inside with Claire at his heels.
Brownlow speaks to the Councillor who is complaining about the overcrowding of cells. He explains Sun Hill is a small station that is not equipped for holding remand prisoners. Another Councillor points out that the strike by prisoner officers (88-89 Wandsworth) wouldn't have helped them as prisoners were forced to be held in police cells. The first Councillor is tone-deaf and claims the pressure on the prisoners is more important than that on the police service or prison officers. "I'm sure you'll be much happier if they were held under a less antiquated system." Brownlow points out before arranging for Christine to show the Councillors around.
Briggs claims that the factory boss has been cheating them for months. The boss interrupts when Briggs is about to tell Claire of some dodgy dealings and tells Claire that the workers need to settle for a pay raise of 40p an hour to fulfil a particular contract and that'll keep their jobs safe.
The Councillors are shown around the cells and speak to the man who Bob had his run-in with earlier. The prisoner claims that Bob assaulted him and is making life purposely hard for him whilst he's there. Christine turns to face Bob to ask for his side.
Viv tells Christine that although she didn't see what happened in the cell she did hear it and that Bob only raised his voice. Christine points out that if she heard what was shouted from the Charge Room then it must have been a hell of an argument. She insists that the man who has blamed Bob is a wind-up merchant who had been upsetting the other prisoner in the cell ever since they were put together a good week ago. Christine reminds her that she can't know what happened for sure if she wasn't there. She asks her what she did see. Viv sighs and says that she heard the shouting, the prisoner was standing by the wall when she got there and Bob was in front of him and that the prisoner is known to be a real nasty piece of work.
Ken finally makes it to the factory but Claire and the others are nowhere to be seen. He's locked out of the main doors so patrols the perimeter trying to get in.
Briggs is in the managers office pretending to be the manager on the phone to the accountant. He finds out that 6 men are to be made redundant and the company are only obliged to pay them 2 weeks wages in payoff. Briggs turns on the manager as he approaches with Claire and he shouts at him that not only has he been lying to them, but he's already fixed it up for 6 of them to be made redundant once the contract is done. Claire shouts that she's cautioning them and Briggs shouts at her to be told and to find a nice boy in blue to play with. He orders her to leave and take the manager with her before one of the men reports Ken trying to get in. Briggs loses it and destroys Claire's radio.
Christine asks Bob if he hit the prisoner. Bob admits that he 'handed him off', explaining the man came at him and he put his hand up in defence and warning to back off. Christine reasons that it only takes one hotheaded moment and they're all in the cart. Bob admits to making an error of judgement in going into the cell alone but insists he did not hit him. Christine asks him to put it in writing.
Nobby forces Claire into a small room. The other men tell him to let her go. He insists she's either for them or against them. Ken manages to get inside and Nobby claims that it's an Industrial Dispute and they're occupying the premises with the manager's knowledge. He insists everything is above board. Ken isn't as easily pushed around as Claire and doesn't shy back. Ken keeps demanding the man's name and asks where Claire is. Nobby says she's behind the red door just along the corridor and that everything was a joke they're just protecting their livelihoods. He accidentally stands on Claire's broken radio - which draws Ken's attention to it.
Christine and Tom interview the prisoner claiming that Bob hit him. There's not a mark on him. Tom points out that if Bob had done as he said with his right fist the man would have gone flying into the wall and be marked. The prisoner scoffs and claims that Bob's had it in for him all week.
Nobby takes Ken to where Claire is being held - just as Claire has found a box of old-fashioned handcuffs. "You're nicked!" She growls as soon as they let her out. Without Nobby interfering, the boss has sorted the men and gotten them to agree to 50p an hour on top of their usual wages and double time on Saturday until the large order is done. The men tell Nobby that they've already agreed it when he protests and the manager just smiles and tells Nobby he doesn't need to deal with him and he's fired. Nobby calls them a bunch of scum and charges into a box, bringing out an example of what they'd all been asked to make. It's a neck restraint that the manager has set up to be sold in the Middle East. The manager insists it's all legal and they're classed as Internal Security Supplies.
He then dives back in the box and brings out another set of the handcuffs that Claire had found. Ken calls for back up and the other workers make themselves scarse as Nobby shouts to them to back him up. Ken and Nobby struggle and he manages to get free to attack the manager's flash car with the handcuffs. The van appears and it takes several officers to subdue and arrest him.
Christine and Tom ask the other prisoner present in the dispute - a man who had been shouting for Bob to move him into a new cell all morning - what happened. He contradicts himself several times. Tom shouts at him to tell the truth and the man admits that no, Bob didn't hit the prisoner. He only pretended he had because he'd been threatened by him and was in fear of what the other prisoner would do to him when alone if he told the truth.
At the station, Nobby tells Ken he was only fighting for human rights. Ken can't agree or disagree whatever he feels and takes himself off to find Nobby a cigarette.
Christine updates Brownlow and he reasons that Councillor Mullins will not believe a word of it. He signs and heads off to receive the usual lecture from her about the police policing themselves. He wants to see Bob at the end of the shift
Nobby doesn't think he's done anything wrong to deserve being arrested. Bob points out that he's damaged police property, assaulted 2 police officers and falsely imprisoned 1 of them as well as damaging the boss' car.
Christine takes Bob aside to tell him that the complaint has been dropped. She points out that he did stoke the situation and should know better which Bob agrees with. She tells him the Chief Super wants to see him at 2pm... right when his dental appointment is!
