Handle with Care

I was looking at this gifset about Buck catching strays from Chimney, and it got me thinking about the conversation that Chimney & Hen have regarding Harry.

The one in which she compares Chimney to Gerrard, and I remember coming across posts that pointed out that what Gerrard did to both Hen & Chimney was motivated by racism and, in Hen's case, homophobia, misogyny and sexism. Another post also pointed out that the way Chimney was handling Harry was how Bobby handled Buck in the lead-up to the lawsuit era.

These are both factually true statements. Gerrard's behaviour towards Chimney (we are going to confine this conversation to Chimney because I want to talk about why Hen might have compared Chim to Gerrard instead of Bobby) was motivated by racism and largely manifested as him getting sidelined on the job. While Chim wasn't motivated by racism, his fear of Harry getting injured on the job was leading him to largely sideline him.

Now let's get to Buck & Bobby. Bobby was motivated by the same concerns re: Buck as Chimney is re: Harry, but in Bobby's case, that manifested in a more extreme manner. Bobby essentially blocked Buck's ability to be an active firefighter on the 118, and to Buck, who thinks of the 118 as his family, this was essentially akin to being homeless and not just jobless.

So, there is a little truth in Hen comparing Chim to Gerrard, because while Chim's motivations are more akin to Bobby's, the result of those motivations is manifesting as how Gerrard's racism towards Chim does.

This brings us to the biggest question of all - why Gerrard? And, I just realised why Hen might have pulled the trump card after all.

The thing is, Bobby is respected and for the 118 - he's practically a patriarch. His recent death has also made him invulnerable to ever having been wrong (which is very common when a good person dies; their wrongdoings are no longer fair game, think of Eddie with Shannon). After death, people suddenly don't want to grapple with nuance, and with someone like Bobby, who had very few faults to begin with, it's very, very easy to just erase any at all.

Comparing Chimney to Bobby is not a good strategy if what you want is for him to change his behaviour; comparing him to Gerrard is.

And, I feel like even if Gerrard's actions towards Chimney weren't even remotely like Chim's actions towards Harry, Hen would have still compared Chim to Gerrard because the idea is to invoke how Chim feels about Gerrard and make him think about how he would feel if he knew Harry felt about him the same way. This would not have the same effect if Hen were comparing Chim to Bobby.

Also, while we are on this topic, no one on the 118 besides Hen ever saw anything wrong in what Bobby did to Buck, it's almost never brought up again. In fact, the resolution of that whole incident is Buck realising why Bobby behaved the way he did and not Bobby ever having to confront his overreaction and the place it comes from. Bobby lost two children, and I feel like if you consider that he thinks of Buck as his child, which is almost proven retroactively in 6x11, it makes sense for him to have an overblown, widely out of proportion reaction to Buck being this badly injured. Bobby actually took care of Buck while he was healing from that injury - cooked for him, and drove him to his physiotherapy appointments - he saw what it took to get Buck back on his feet and just when everyone thought the danger was past he literally spit out blood in front of all of them & collapsed, imagine having that happen during an active fire - like with Hen- and all of a sudden Bobby's actions make sense.

But, Buck unfortunately can't see that he can't see the deep care Bobby's actions originate from; instead, he can only see that he's all of a sudden become unwanted because he's no longer useful. Literally, think of a puppy covered in dirt, getting rained on with the worst case of puppy dog eyes as it stares at the gate because it thinks it's been locked out of home and hearth - that's literally Buck. No wonder he claws as hard as he did to get back in, of course, he was never being denied home and hearth, but Buck has had (debatable) a hard time separating the 118, his chosen family, from 118, his work family, he thinks one only exists if the other does, not realising that the ties run deeper than that.

Also, it's interesting how Eddie is also not on Buck's side. Eddie, who just lost a spouse and doesn't want to lose another aligns with Bobby's views on how to deal with Buck to a terrifying degree. Again, is it any wonder that the two people who care about Buck to an outsized degree are the ones who can't see that their idea of caring for Buck is smothering him? What's new? Just Eddie & Bobby mirroring each other once again.

Chim, on the other hand, is seen as more of a neutral party - he clearly doesn't agree with Eddie (which is made apparent during the Grocery Store Divorce), but he also isn't going out of his way to make Buck feel welcome once he's back (which is what Hen does). Honestly, barring Hen, no one is actually objective about the lawsuit era, including Buck.

So, while it would have been interesting to see Hen bring up Bobby in this scenario, it would muddy the waters instead of having the intended effect.

Is she a savior or a stalker? 🤔 Spoiler alert: it’s a bit of both. 😅 Maddie's attempts to help others often reflect her own unresolved trauma, showcasing the dangers of overstepping boundaries in relationships.

Then we pivot to our detailed notes on Bobby's parenting style, which is like a classic overprotective dad trying to navigate the emotional waters of parenting without actually connecting with his kids. It's like he’s got a 🧭 GPS that leads to the wrong address, and let’s just say, it’s not the destination we’d hoped for. 🗺️ We examine how Bobby's overprotective nature stems from his past, revealing how parental experiences shape current behaviors and relationships with loved ones.

Meanwhile, Eddie is asking Buck, “What about us? What about everything we’ve been through? What about trust?” 🥺 in the epic conclusion to the first Buddie divorce. We dissect every super normal totally platonic bro moment 🙂‍↕️ of Buck and Eddie’s reconciliation, from “I don’t know what you want from me Buck” to “Of course I forgive you.” We applaud 👏 the cinematography 🎥 in this scene and discuss how it enhances the emotional depth but also visually represents the characters' internal conflicts and connections.

Eddie and Maddie are pushing away the people who know them the best as they pull the sheets over their heads and make their own beds. 🛌
