WARNING: HEAVY ANGST, MAYOR CHARACTER DEATH & HURT.
SUMMARY: Douxie sees the team grow old and pass away. It's harder than it looks.
It had been a long time.
So long that he hadn't actually felt it.
One of the worst parts of being immortal was seen the people you had meet grow old, and eventually, die. Maybe that was the reason he tried to don't get attached to people, maybe that was the origin of the lack of his social skills. Or maybe his misunderstood of time was the real reason for all that.
The problem was not the origin.
The problem was that see all your beloved ones die was hard.
Doesn't matter how much time had passed, or in what century of history, they were. It was always the same.
It was always painful.
He had lost a lot of people in the conquest.
He had lost even more in Salem.
So by the time the "Great War" came, he had acquired the bad habit to enclose his emotions inside, as if his heart had created his own shell to avoid revive those emotions again. So when the war casualties started to hit, that was the first time that Hisirdoux Casperan did not suffer a loss.
The bad part of that was that since then. he was not able to digest the death of others.
It had been a long time.
So long that he hadn't actually felt it.
Not until it was too late.
Even when the wrinkles started to fill his friends' skin like a blanket. Even when their hair slowly became white. And even when it became hard for them to recognize him, or even remember his name. Douxie didn't want to accept it.
So when the day finally arrived, he stayed in negation.
He had received a call. A call from Jim's and Claire's grandsons.
Jim had passed away in the hospital, after 2 weeks in a tube. His longs hadn't worked well and his body was already tired of existence.
Or at least, that's what their grandsons had said.
At that moment, Archie and Zoe looked at him with horror in their eyes. Douxie just kept the phone between his hands and nodded with the face before the call ended. Then, he get up and with a warm smile asked his friends what they wanted to eat.
Archie and Zoe exchanged looks.
Douxie was in negation.
Hisirdoux went downstairs to make a teacup, and change the water on Archie's plate. He didn't realize that he had put the hot water on the familiar's plate, and normal water on his cup until he sorbed it.
His body was in autopilot.
During the night, he heard Archie cry and slow sobs getting out of Zoe's lips. But he didn't know why. Had something happened? Why they were crying?
No one could sleep that night.
He stayed in negation for days. Hearing his friends' sad whispers of how sad was not seeing Jim again. They went to his funeral. Douxie put on a black suit that Zoe gave him and stayed quiet the whole event.
But he never cried.
He went early thinking that he needed to clean his room because it was a mess.
The shell on his hard was doing well protecting him from the pain.
But later or sooner, the emotions needed to came out.
It was an afternoon, a week after the event. He was using his phone and was reading the messages that other wizards keep sending him.
Are you okay?
Do you want to talk?
He was fine. Why was everybody acting that way?
So he opened a chat and accepted to talk to someone. He didn't remember who, that didn't really matter. The only he remembered was to start a little conversation, talking about Jim as an old pal and friend, as his right hand. And then it hit him.
Jim was dead.
He was never going to see Jim again.
And the shell finally broke.
Fat tears ran from his eyes, and he dropped the device.
Then he started screaming.
All the emotions had accumulated together, en exploded inside him into a million pieces.
Zoe and Archie were on the first floor, and when the windows broke for the wizard's screaming, they both ran to find him.
Hisirdoux does not remember what happened next. He screamed forcing blasts of blue magic around the room where he was. Books, furniture, everything went down.
The next time he regained consciousness between his screams, Zoe was holding him tight against her chest and whispered that everything was okay and that having emotions was completely acceptable.
Douxie felt broken inside.
Jim was dead.
Jim. Was. Dead.
And after a long week, he had finally accepted the new.
Douxie couldn't hold his pieces together. It was to hard.
It was to hard.
So he left himself melt on the floor, broke and useless, while Archie and Zoe hugged him hard.
The trio stayed in there for hours. Until Douxie's throat hurt for screaming, until his vocal cords couldn't resist more, and the last magic trail finally vanished from the room.
