I was wondering if you do commissions at all? Or if this is just a fun hobby for you?

Ahahahahahahahahaha, I wish this was just a fun hobby.

I am a professional freelance artist, so I do freelance work but I am not currently accepting private commissions at the moment. I used to really enjoy drawing commissions for people, but honestly these days I don't have the energy for them.

I’m definitely guilty of this too, but it’s really starting to irk me about people talking about quarantine ending like it’s going to just end and everything will go back to normal. But that’s not going to happen. We aren’t going to be told “everything opens on Monday!” and then expect life to just continue like pre-quarantine. Yeah, more stores will open and travel won’t be as restricted, but regular events and activities won’t come right back. How long until sport events, concerts, conventions return? And how long after they return will it feel normal and not like another outbreak waiting to happen? Will there still be a fear of flying in a crowded metal tube with no personal space? Will working in an office surrounded by hundreds of others feel safe? I just keep getting reminded that while we’re waiting for some normalcy to return so we can continue with our lives, it will probably be months or years before everything starts to feel the same again. How many flights and concerts and conventions and activities did we take for granted?

Tonight, probably because PAX is happening and I'm not at it and it's weird, I've been thinking of past conventions. In particular, I found myself remembering something that happened at PAX West/Prime/whatever we called it at the time, back in (oh god) 2010.

Dragon Age 2 was BioWare's next big thing. They had a photo booth where you could pose with a Staff of Parthalan prop, and your photos would be posted online later for you to find and save. This setup was fine except for one key issue: the site allowed comments.

And so, my photo.

Here's the thing with the Staff of Parthalan. It's a mage's weapon, part melee, part staff. Read: it's got a blade on one end and a gem at the other, so you can stab people with the pointy bit and shoot fire out the fancy glowy rock bit. Even the cinematic trailer shows off both options. And so, being handed this thing, I went with my roleplaying biases toward magic skills and struck a pose holding the staff with the gem toward the camera.

I logged in later to find my photo and found a bunch of sneering mansplainers in the comments saying how stupid I was for holding the weapon wrong.

Sometimes it's perfectly obvious WHY I so fondly hold onto the idea of setting everything on fucking fire.
