Batman gentle parenting the criminals he's in love with

So, lost in the sauce as I am for Jason's short-lived non-canon mom and that family drama - had a thought, a non-original what if au with Jason being found and adopted by Natalia (and in extension, her adoptive brother Anton*), and becomes a gentleman thief, rather than Robin.

This what if is what it says on the tin, but I also wanted to lean in on a "phantom thief" idea - because I'm a glutton for angst, Jason does die, but is resurrected through another means that's more occult related (vampiric in nature) instead.

So, instead of Batman training, Jason is taught by Anton in the thievery/combat arts, and Natalia teaches him how to be a social chameleon, the perfect charming young man (who can pick your pocket as quickly as steal your heart).

Jason is still very much a pugnacious guy, and will not hesitate to call bullshit out (or throw down). He is openly defiant of the powers that be/heroes, and critical of Batman (and especially Bruce Wayne).

I need to work on this a bit more, but I hope you enjoy what I've got so far y'all 😎👍

i'm thinking again about that post that went like "maybe i just have sexual abuse goggles but it baffles me how much subtext gets ignored and denied", this time in the context of natalia knight/nocturna and her relationship with anton, the older son of the man who adopted her. thinking about his obsession with her and how it's linked to her appearance, about how he's said to be the one initially putting the pressure on her to join the family's criminal activities, about how he jealously attacks and even kills men who show interest in her. about how he becomes hostile in the face of rejection (a rejection that comes because natalia finds out he's become a killer), and how this culminates in anton murdering natalia.

i'm thinking about how, yes, these aren't exactly well-known or popular characters (certainly not outside a very specific niche), but i have never seen anyone else explicitly calling this an abusive relationship.

(and i'm once again pissed off about how caped crussader adapted their story to be about a ~devoted older brother to a monstrous, child-killing vampire girl who Tried Really Hard To Stop Her From Killing People but got ~tragically killed in the way).

(Batman #377): I understand Nocturna being a materialist. That part is understandable to me. But what I can't seem to grasp is her weird fetishization of the night. It's something I just try to deal with as I read, but I also find it confusing and baffling. Also, I'm beginning to feel tired again. Does that mean I take a break from the comics for a short while? I am considering it, but i'm not sure yet.

I also just have a bunch of other posts I want to make, so I'm starting to think it might just be sensible to call it quits here for a brief time so that I can try to focus on new posts. Because I have a decent amount of ideas.

Batman: Caped Crusader 1x08 - Nocturne

I STARTED WATCHING CAPED CRUSADER AND GOT TO THE EPISODE WITH ANTON AND NATALIA AND I STARED BAWLING OMG.

This show's so good please watch it people PLEASE.

It's REALLY GOOD. If you like the versions of Batman where they let supernatural stuff happen, like ghosts and vampires, this is for you.

i think it’s interesting how natalia’s written as basically pretty suicidal, she essential has almost no regard for her own life especially after feeling like she has no control and way to stop the death of the night. the comics don’t do so, but it would be interesting to explore it as a bit of a response to loss, she has lost a lot in a very short amount of time - her father (who was her only family left essentially) and her “normal” when she became sensitive to light. i’m sure she has always loved the night as an astronomer, but her obsession with the night must only have increased drastically when she lost all ability to go out in the day, and i don’t think she completely HATES the day, it is never stated and she has once brought jason out to walk in the park, a choice of activity that was perhaps something she enjoyed before it became that much harder for her to do.

that is, until jason comes in to rescue her, and she suddenly has a change of heart and wants to live, even coming to regret her earlier action and thinking “she was a fool to welcome the first blow”

at the end, after nocturna has floated off on her hot air balloon and they are trying to escape the storm, jason yells at batman “don’t give up” and the he’s “gotta fight” because “jla and the outsideres need you” and “the world may need you”. do you think jason is yelling those things at bruce because he just saw nocturna essentially give up and let anton kill her and he just can’t lose another parental figure, especially if they just choose to give up their lives too (i don’t know if the writers thought that much about it, but i certainly did)
