WHAT HAS MY JOURNEY BEEN LIKE TO BECOME A BETTER WRITER | #AuthorProtagChallenge Day 6 . I don't know how to start this one. But I read a lot, like REALLY A LOT. For years I've been reading and reading how to write, and watching YouTube videos, and reading again, and watching, and reading... You get the picture. . And not that it's not important to read and to know the basics of novel structure, plotting, and outlining. But you really can't learn it just by reading. You have to start writing at some point. . I started with a great idea about a sci-fi novel. It was September 2017. I tried to outline it and be ready for #campnanowrimo but soon I got bored and when NaNoWriMo started I didn't want to write that novel anymore. . I also realized that sci-fi is not my genre. And maybe this was the main reason why I couldn't finish it. I realized that people are right when they say that you have to write what you like to read . I like to read many different genres. But never sci-fi. Never ever. I didn't know how to describe things and how to write a sci-fi novel because I haven't read one. I've watched movies. I love watching sci-fi movies but never reading a sci-fi novel. . So this was my first lesson - write what you read. Then I slowly started to realize what I have to do. Then I tried different outlining methods but nothing really worked for me except for the Snowflake method. . WHAT DOES MY STASIS WRITING LIFE LOOK LIKE | #AuthorProtagChallenge Day 5 . I talked a little about this yesterday but it was more about the past. Now let me tell you what my writing life looks like right now 😊 . First, I stopped trying to apply someone else's strategies and formulas for outlining my novel. Long ago I decided to write the first draft without an outline. Without many details. Just to see where the story will go. And I may use this as an outline. I don't know why I didn't do it. But now I am doing exactly this. . Second, I'm trying to create a writing routine. I hated this word for so long that I didn't realize this is exactly what I need. I have issues with consistency. Some BIG problems 😁 So I'm working on that to be more consistent and to create a writing routine. . What my writing life looks like right now? If I don't have other tasks (e.g. a court hearing or lectures with my students) ➡ I try to get up early in the morning - somewhere around 5:30, and write for at least 45 to 60 minutes while drinking my coffee. ➡ Then I prepare to go out and go to my office. I feel more comfortable to work there because there are no distractions. ➡ For the rest of my day, I mainly work on my website, email list building strategies, and course content. ➡ Sometimes I have to do other stuff like working on a case or preparing something for the university but with the summer coming these tasks will be less. . I'm eager to see what you will write about your writing life. SELF-REFLECTION ON MY WRITING | #AuthorProtagChallenge Day 4 . Well, what to say about that? . I've been struggling for months to find the right way to do it 🙄 But I finally realized what everyone was telling - there is not right or wrong way. There's just YOUR WAY of doing things, including writing. . For years I've been reading about: How to write a novel? How to write a mystery? How to outline? How to....? You get the picture 😊 . But I missed one major tip. I knew it. I just didn't want to realize it. I'll use the words of Margaret Atwood: "Become a writer by writing. There is no other way!" . And this simple truth was always slipping away from me. . I tried several times to write. As a matter of fact, one of my serious tries - I read what I had written to my husband and he was amazed. He liked it very much but I stopped there. Why? Because I thought I have to teach how to write, how to continue and only after that I may continue writing the story. . Guess what? I never finished that book. But it's on my list now. It will be one of my future projects. Because now I understand. The only way to learn to write, the only way to become a writer, the only way to achieve my goals, is to TAKE ACTION NOW. . Start writing now. . Finish the story. . Then read some theory and start editing it. Edit it as many times as it's necessary to make it good, to make it better. . So, I'm still learning. Still trying to find my style, my voice, my way of doing it. But I'll finish it. OBSTACLES IN MY WRITING LIFE | #AuthorProtagChallenge Day 3 . This is going to be a really long post. . It's been 2 years since I decided to change the direction of my life and to start writing a book. A fiction book. I've written several books but they were all non-fiction and law-related since I am also a lawyer and a university professor. . And here comes the first obstacle - my full-time jobs. They are so time- and energy-consuming that there are days that I have no energy left to write. I also travel a lot because the university where I teach is in another town. . But these aren't the main obstacles in front of me. . I will be honest. I'm AFRAID. Phew, I said it🙂. I am afraid that my book won't be as good as I wanted it to be. I am afraid because English is my second language. I am afraid that... Well, I'm afraid of so many things. . And the fear is what draws me back. I am constantly procrastinating because of this. I know it's the worst thing I could ever do. I know there is nothing to be afraid of. But somewhere there in the deepest cell of my brain there is this grain of fear that I cannot erase. . For a year and a half I was wondering what exactly I want from my life. I was reading how to write and being afraid to do the only thing that can teach me how to write - WRITE. I was justifying myself with the work I have and everything else. . So to conclude, the main obstacles in my writing life are fear and self-doubt. I am fighting with them but there are still moments when I'm not very sure in myself.
