Aspec Glossary: Averse

What is the Aspec Glossary?

Averse is a descriptor often used to indicate one's feelings about personally engaging with certain actions, typically involving disgust. For example, someone may be romance-averse, sex-averse, rose-averse, plato-averse, etc.

Aversion is not the same thing as negativity. Someone can be sex-averse without being sex-negative.

Someone who is averse typically doesn't mind general discussions of the thing they are averse to, but may be disgusted by the idea of personally entering a relationship involving those things. For example, someone who is sex-averse may be disgusted by the thought of having sex themselves, but be fine with depictions of sexual activities in media and general discussions of sex.

Note: aversion differs from repulsion, in that aversion is usually only describing feelings of disgust when the individual is involved personally, while repulsion describes feelings of disgust for the concept overall. For example, a sex-repulsed person may be disgusted at the general idea of sex, while a sex-averse person may be fine with the general idea of sex, but feel disgusted at the idea of personally having sex.
