i just re watched ATLA ( now on Korra ) and i’ve been binging reactions cause i wanna see what people think about Azula and my god i forgot how many people hate her, ive heard disgusting language used for her and have only seen a few people actually be sympathetic and feel bad for her, let alone understand her as a character

i’m tired of the way most of the fandom still act as if she’s a uniquely evil irredeemable monster even though she’s not any worse than Zuko or Iroh before their redemptions ( and they’ve arguably done worse than her )

i feel like the fact that iroh openly admits he does not care for her like when he said “she’s crazy and she needs to go down” has a part to play in the way people view her since iroh is a god in the fandom and his word is gospel to people so they take that as like confirmation that she’s irredeemable ( which is ironic coming from mr dragon of the west )

something else that annoys me is when people try and bring up the comics to “prove” that she doesn’t want a redemption / rejected the opportunity ( even though she does show baby steps towards redemption ) but zuko did too, couldn’t him betraying iroh even after Katara was like “i thought you changed” also be see as him “rejecting his redemption”? but it still happened for him so why isn’t it possible for her?

i know it’s probably never gonna happen but i’m still holding out for an Azula redemption

Posted in Reddit by u/HAZMAT_Eater in r/PoorAzula (yes, I follow that group, and She isn't my favourite character), an interesting view from a fan of a crack ship that I don't hate or like it, but I find interesting for many crackships, and I say that as a fan of Jetzula, with the knowledge that It would be problematic (not for the questions about characterizations of the characters, but more as partecipation to Canon Sources, whatever my ideas could be about some Canon Elements and the Retcons inside of them).

This doesn't mean that "oh, You're against fanfictions" or "you tolerate Konietzko and Di Martino stupid choices" NO IT ISN'T! Just a remember, a Memento Mori, cause we have to not confuse what we want with what we have. And if you want to make a better work without the Retcons made with LoK ad the Comics, You're Right and I support you, but we have to remember that there is Logic and some limitations, and whatever would be the changes in your fanfictions, you have to recognize the characterizations of the characters.

I hope some fics will address the post-war Fire Nation issue. The Fire Nation has been at war for 100 years, they have probably been taught that the Fire Nation is more advanced and brave than the other nations, so that's why they still fight for the Fire Nation. So in their eyes, Zuko and Iroh are traitors, why should they agree to let Zuko take the throne? Meanwhile, Azula is a war hero after conquering the city they spent days conquering in the past Ba Sing Se, the Fire Nation would definitely want her more than Zuko after Ozai's defeat.

And there are many questions about what did Azula do wrong? Azula brought her exiled brother back alive and safe and got the crown prince title she wanted, but she refused and went back to being the second heir.

As for Mai and Ty Lee, Azula is a princess of course she has a higher status than the two of them, giving orders or whatever, that's her title. When Mai and Ty Lee betrayed Azula at the Boiling Rock, Azula spared them from the death penalty for betraying the royal family. So what are they blaming Azula for?

After the war, Azula suffered from PTSD and had hallucinations of her mother, Azula should have been treated in a hospital facility not an asylum (I guess it looked like a prison), she was also wearing a straitjacket. I don't know if anyone visited her in canon, or was she alone in the asylum with that straitjacket for almost 1-2 years? Then how could she get better?

Not only that, Zuko brought up the title "I am the Fire Lord, and I want you to help me find my mother". Well, and what, in the early drafts of the comic, they actually wanted Azula to go looking for her with a straitjacket??? wtf.

Also, what if the Fire Nation knew the truth that Zuko and Team Avatar intended to harm Azula? If Azula died, how would they react? Not only that, Aang was the one who understood the most about hallucinations, why didn't he help? Katara too, she witnessed the fall but no, she still considered Azula an enemy.

And more importantly, why did Ursa write a letter to Ozai saying that Zuko wasn't his son? If Azula had made this letter public, Azula would have completely won the people's support, but she didn't and left the letter for Zuko.

In my country, they say "A son takes after his mother, a daughter takes after her father".

In defense of Princess Azula

I respect people’s opinions, but I feel like people make Azula out to be someone so diabolical when she’s not. I know she has done wrong things, I don’t support them. But she was only a fourteen year old child. Her mother neglected her and favored her brother more. Her father used that as an opportunity to manipulate her and use her. Iroh never helped her. She had no one. Zuko had his mom and Iroh. Azula  only controlled Mai and Ty Lee with fear because that was all she was taught was proper. Her abusive father taught her wrong things, and she didn’t have anyone else to teach her what was right. She was just a child that wanted to be genuinely loved. I personally believe she used fear on Mai and Ty Lee because she was scared to lose them. I personally believe she did care about them, along with Zuko too. She never told Zuko’s secret about visiting Iroh. It was never brought up again. She was looking out for him.  Ember Island is said to show your true self, and we saw the real, broken Azula, who just wanted love and attention from her mother. She also apologized to Ty Lee genuinely and genuinely felt bad for hurting her feelings. The only time she heard “i love you” from someone was from her hallucination at the mirror. I personally believe that she deserved a full on redemption arc, just like how Zuko got one. Comparing her to Ozai is so wrong, it’s wrong on so many levels. She was just as much as a victim of his as Zuko was. Please don’t spread hate, this is just my opinion.

Since air is represented as blue-ish in the series, I find their aesthetically congruent elements appealing on top of the ‘Aang is the only one who gives Azula a chance at first despite the fact she literally killed him’ assumed dynamic
