I would really like to make gingerbread for Christmas but I need to practice a bit first. Sadly I don't have any recipes. I'm going to look on YT and the usual websites but I was wondering if anyone knew of a gingerbread recipe which is really good?
Lightning crackled in the distance, flashing down to earth and disappearing as soon as he noticed it. The rain smacked against the porch roof. It danced on the steps and scattered occasional drops onto wooden boards.
Leonard went to take a sip of his coffee but found the cup empty. He frowned and swung his feet off the fence.
The rain had been pelting down all day, ruining all plans they had. Last time he checked everyone was watching a film. But Leonard couldn't sit still when there was a storm on. He'd loved them ever since he was a kid, maybe the electricity from the lightning filled him with excitement.
After walking into the living room, he laughed. Everyone was asleep. Jim curled up on Leonard's chair, Jaylah on the matching one across the room, Spock and Uhura lent on each other's heads, Scotty hung his head over the arm of the leather sofa, Hikaru was resting his head on the sofa cushions and Chekov huddled against the hard frame.
He clapped his hands, and in one go, they all woke up.
"What? Who is that?" Jim said.
He rubbed his eyes and blinked, looking around until he found Leonard. He squinted at him while the others scanned the room.
"Why'd you have to do that?" Jim said as he walked to Leonard. "I was having such a wonderful dream,"
"Oh, yeah? What was it about?"
Jim smiled and slid his arms around his waist, "I had a dog."
"That's all?"
"What? I'm easily pleased!"
Leonard chuckled and pulled away from Jim. Their eyes were red rimmed and faces saggy. They had to do something, maybe they could bake something, it was the holidays after all.
"So, what did you get us up for?" Scotty asked.
Leonard hesitated for a moment, then replied when he had an idea, "We're making gingerbread," he tunnelled them to the kitchen. "Come on, it'll be fun."
"I do not know what is gingerbread," Jaylah stated.
"It's a biscuit-"
"Cookie," Hikaru interrupted.
Scotty rolled his eyes and continued, "Biscuit that's flavoured with ginger and nutmeg, they're spices, it's made in winter because they're associated with the cold, make you feel warm and all that."
Jaylah nodded, "I like spices."
"Good," said Leonard, rummaging for the ingredients and slamming them on the island in the centre of the kitchen. "Because my gingerbread is legendary."
"No it isn't," Jim scoffed.
"How would you know? There ain't any ovens on the Enterprise,"
"We had one in the Academy!"
"And I made it every year!"
"I never saw any of it!" Jim shouted harmlessly.
Leonard stood back and stroked his chin, "Oh yeah, I gave it to hospital staff, I guess it was legendary in Starfleet medical."
Jim rolled his eyes and turned to the recipe book in front of him. It was ancient. The pages were shortbread yellow with burnt corners and brown stains. He had to squint to read some words, the ink faded from use. The soft scent of dust and age wafted as he lent closer to the pages.
"How old is this?" He asked.
"I think it was my Nana's," Bones replied.
He appeared from the cupboard holding flour and a wooden spoon. His hair flopped in front of his face and Jim's heart did a somersault. There was something about him being so domestic that made him melt.
"Right, Sulu, Chekov, measure out the ingredients using the scales," Leonard ordered.
He tied his apron around his waist and the group giggled when they saw what it said. Kiss the cook.
Jim had got it for him when they first bought this house, after his resurrection. It was strange to see Bones be so homely after only knowing him in Starfleet. The chance was a good one. It gave him some sort of future he could hope for.
After all the ingredients were measured out, Jim began to read out the recipe, letting Jaylah and Uhura pour everything in the mixer. Spock kneaded the dough and Leonard cut out the shapes before placing the trays of gingerbread people in the oven.
"Now, while we wait," Leonard said with his hands on his hips. "We can make the icing for our gingerbread people."
The others nodded and grabbed the various ingredients. Leonard was surprised at how smoothly this was going. He could be weirdly possessive over his kitchen and was hesitant to let them help with baking. It turned out that his adult friends had more coordination than his nieces and nephews, who weren't older than fifteen.
Once they'd taken out the gingerbread people, and let them cool, they turned to their various decorating stations and grabbed their weapons.
Uhura picked up the red, making herself. She designed her dress, spread the icing and placed chocolate buttons for her eyes.
Spock raised his eyebrow at the thought of making a crude version of himself but began to swirl black icing, in meticulous detail, to make the most accurate gingerbread vulcan that he could.
Jim hid his when Leonard tried to peek. He had that mischievous grin on his face and chuckled to himself when he stood back to look at his creation.
The others carried on making theirs. Hikaru and Chekov took theirs less seriously, when he looked at them they were covered in various icing. Jaylah lent over, face laced with concentration as she stuck her tongue out. Scotty was humming as he made his little gingerbread man have a kilt.
Leonard turned back to his. He added yellow, then black and plenty of candy buttons. He stepped back and smiled. It was a perfect Jim.
"Done!" Jim exclaimed.
He wiped some sweat off his forehead. He slid his creation over to Leonard and shone his grin at him.
Leonard looked down to see a grumpy gingerbread him. He wore a blue shirt and black pants and Jim had made sure that he looked thoroughly annoyed.
"I love it," He said with feigned annoyance.
He handed his to Jim and watched him laugh, then take a comically large bite. The others finished theirs, immediately going to eat them.
Leonard cleared the mess away and took off his apron. He loved to cook. It was one of the things he missed when on the Enterprise, apart from his daughter. There was something about working hard to cook a masterpiece that you couldn't get in a food replicator.
Jim came up behind him and slid his arms around his waist. He kissed his forehead and nuzzled into the crook of his neck.
"That was really fun, thanks,"
"Told you I'm a domestic god,"
Jim laughed, "I never denied it."
Leonard turned and pulled him into a strong embrace. He was so warm, always was, and sighed into his shoulder. This is what he'd been waiting for for so long. Love. Not just romantic, but familial, friends who loved and understood him. And he was so happy to have them.
Kinda struggled with this one, I think it's because there's not a clear structure apart from "They bake" but I persevered and got it done. Hope you enjoyed this!
In the time since I made gingerbread men I have tried a few other recipes, they however did not go very well, and I therefore will be sadly announcing that justjayisfine0 Will be taking a break from trying to bake.
For the good of the people.
Me being horrified at my own cooking.
The people around me not knowing what they're looking at.
