What Doesn’t Belong?

After voluntarily cleaning trash from the beach in Carmel for three years, I’ve developed a keen eye for what doesn’t belong, even when piles of kelp are involved. Yup, a soda can jumped out at me—see the photos. It’s a shame that volunteers are needed rid the sand of plastic spoons, water bottles, paper plates and candy wrappers. I could go on. Please put me out of business.

a list of things i've found on my local coastline, in no particular order:

- seaglass

- ceramic pottery shards

- various animal bones/crustacean molts

- 2 marbles

- an entire motorola phone

- 2 intact drinking glasses (i cleaned and took the second i found home)

- broken pairs of glasses

- at least £1 worth of change

- a poster for calmac advertising smooth sailing (found directly after storm eowyn)

- multiple cones

- fuses

- an insane number of disposable vapes, trashed beer cans, and plastic wrappers >:(

- tires

- jellyfish of varying species

- a living fish of some kind that i had to yeet back into the water (i do not know if it lived)

would love to know what weird stuff other people have found thrown back onto the coasts of where they're from that they didn't expect to see. because the phone threw me for a loop. it's mostly intact too, i have it in my flat bc i have no clue how to safely dispose of it or if it is at all recoverable. i do use the drinking glass i recovered regularly, and i'm trying to work out how to turn my kilos of seaglass into costume armour

I get really upset about beach trash, especially those fucking mylar balloons 💯 ppl think it's for good luck and shit.. All your doing is killing sea life when they pop over the ocean.. I found 4 today.. I love the beach and sea life. Get informed 💯🙌
