Lu Feng is one of the best written black flags ever! This wasn't just a case of "hurt people hurt people" and "look, he broke/lost his favorite toy and will be a good boy now". We got to see the whole spiral into darkness and it was painfully perfect.
Lu Feng was always a red flag, but we didn't have to guess how this Lu Feng...
... turned into this Lu Feng.
We watched him break piece by piece.
Because Lu Feng believed the lies...
... and couldn't see the truth.
Lu Feng was willing to sacrifice everything for Yi Chen...
... and he was begging to be chosen back.
But Yi Chen didn't, and Lu Feng refused to let him go...
... because Lu Feng doesn't know how to live without him.
We adore our green flag best boys. But that doesn't mean we don't enjoy some orange, red and even black flags. And sometimes, they make us LOVE them!!! Messy human characters are fun, especially when done well, and Double Helix delivered an epic broken boy. There was no need to infer or wonder at what Lu Feng was thinking or feeling or how he could possibly hurt the one he loved. They laid it all out and we witnessed him get more and more twisted. It was great!
Hey Jude! Talking about slow burn romances, do you have any advice for writing enemies to lovers? I have a character in mind but he is literally just a very bad person that I worry that readers won't even be willing to try with how morally corrupt they are
*side eyes Dante*
Are you sure about that? Jun from SoH has fans even though their like every horrible thing you can think of
People will romance black flag ROs don’t worry about that!
So the way I approach ETL is that I ask myself why would these people be into each other? And could they respect each other as people? Could they like each other as people? Or at least be so obsessed they overlook these things? Attraction is a good place to start if you’re stuck but if you’re going for true love as an end point you have to make sure they don’t only say they love each other because of their bodies/faces.
They need to know things about each other, bond, tell things they might not tell anyone else. Be comfortable with feeling vulnerable and expressing that in front of them. You also need to justify the slow burn. It can’t just be there for no reason. (I mean it can but readers don’t appreciate since it seems to serve no purpose but drama and the relationship ends up feeling shallow).
