It’s pretty hilarious that the 12 copies of De Santa’s’ book is in a box full of nothing but kids books for returns. Like those 5 minute stories and such.
I decided to compile this list after reading a Twitter feed sent to me. Over on TikTok there are “influencers” advocating for the return of e-books to Amazon after reading. Apparently, Amazon has no policy on this. This practice harms authors, especially indie authors and writers just starting out. Royalties from returned e-books are deducted from an author’s account. There is also a delivery…
Were you daydreaming of having your shiny new book in stock at your local store? Did you know that most bookstores will not stock your book unless you mark it as returnable? Not a problem. IngramSpark will allow you to do so! Just a few clicks and you too can be a "real" author with your book in a store!
UNLESS YOU ARE STEPHEN KING OR WANT TO LOSE MONEY - SAY NO TO RETURNS.
"At first as I looked over the April numbers, I couldn’t make sense of what I was seeing. My total units sold for the month came to -52. That’s a negative 52. My sales totaled -$877.40. What kind of nightmare joke was this?... I had sold another four copies of the book in April, but at the same time 56 copies had been returned by the bookstores that had originally ordered them... That ran $885.52 and I was on the hook for it."
Returnable books are what enable bookstores to maintain an affordable inventory. But they also put a big burden on small publishers like me.
Worse yet, he was STILL on the hook for any of the books he sold to be returned for the next six months.
Realizing how much I stood to lose if this happened again, I logged into [IngramSpark] and updated my pricing structures. I reduced my wholesale discount to 30% and, more importantly, marked my books as nonreturnable.
Even so, it was more than four years before my print sales crept back into the black.
Remember: people can always special order your book by requesting it directly. You do not have to set returns to yes sell your book.
More authors are dealing with the issue of people reading and returning books on Amazon for full refunds. Here's why indie authors are heated about it. #reading #writingcommunity #books #bookrefunds #bookstealing
You read that title right. I’ve been seeing talks of this more and more from fellow indie authors on instagram, tiktok, blogs, and twitter. Among us authors, this argument doesn’t seem very controversial, but when you add in the readers who see nothing wrong with this…well, let’s just say things are getting heated. And that’s why I’m here with my two cents.
I haven’t had any personal experience…
