Thinking of a fic centered on Jim Gordon. He saw how Bruce took in Dick Grayson after seeing his parents die, and feels a little guilty.
He wonders if he could have done more for him. He was the one to find him after this parents murders, the one who carried him away and looked after him until his butler could get there. Should he have taken him in, instead of letting him grow up in a manor too big for one kid alone? The age difference between him and Bruce is about the same as Bruce and his kid, Dick. Sometimes when he sees a news headline of billionare Brucie Wayne doing something stupid or self destructive he questions his choice.
He tries to put it out of his mind, he's got other things to worry about, like this new Batman character.
One day he finds out that Bruce Wayne is Batman and the guilt comes back. He thinks about every time he's heard of Batman getting horribly injured and wonders if things would have turned out this way if he'd adopted him? And now there are Robins, child heros, to consider too.
Then Batman dies. The robins, the kids are left orphaned, once again. Dick and Jason are adults, and Damian has gone to live with Dick but Tim is at home. By himself in that big manor. And he just sees another kid, carrying the responsibility of Wayne enterprises and a legacy too big for him, in that giant house by himself and makes the decision he thinks he maybe should have made a long time ago.
By the time Batman comes back there's another dynamic duo. Jim and Tim. Bruce sees them once discussing a case with their matching black coffees and finds himself more okay with it then he thought he'd be. Besides it's only fair considering he was fully expecting to be a father in law to Barbara-
