Anybody else keep having to search up words you learnt from reading just to make sure it means what you think? Cus I just had to search up the word perturbed cus I only had the feeling of the word.

Bad news, I haven't written the other half yet. I will get to it but I have other projects going on at the moment.

I only have 2 days left of college though so maybe I will actually write more when I am free from the constraints of the education system.

Oya's Poetry Corner #1 ~ Knives

[The following is a poem written as an attempt to capture the isolation I feel when symptoms from my chronic illness get bad.]

I don’t remember when I woke up this way.

Was it sudden, or gradual? I wish I knew. That girl so many years ago, so young, but could take on the world, where did she go?

All I know is this:

Every day, every night, it’s hard to keep track of the time when time has become meaningless. Every time I wake up, I see someone has tied weights to my body and buried knives under my skin.

The thing that did this, an ever-looming shadow, looks at me from his spot on the ceiling and beams with pride at what he created.

Some days, the weights are small, the knives are dull, and he returned more of my brain. Other days, days that are becoming more frequent, the weights are the size of dinner plates, and the knives are freshly sharpened, and cotton replaces brain matter.

The shadow watches from my ceiling, laughs at me as I force myself out of bed, filled with joy as he watches me traverse the years of filth that has built up around me. The joy becomes ecstasy as he notices the limp from a too-tight hip when I force myself to my desk.

My chair wraps around my body, and my computer welcomes me with open arms. It wraps its arms around me, allowing me to breathe in more and more waves of its addictive poison. It adds more knives, digging them into my back, laughing with as much joy as the shadow watching over my shoulder, but…

I don’t care.

If I were to move, that may make some of the knives fall out, but that requires energy. Energy I haven’t had since the weights became bigger and the knives became sharper. My computer knows this, but its lies are sweet, distracting me from isolation with a freedom that would make me panic if I were to lose it.

The shadow wraps its hands, its filthy claws, around my waist, digging into my skin. The nerve tightens, tightens, until I can hardly breathe. It tightens, tightens, until the nerve itself finds a knife and digs it into my stomach as well.

I reach for my shelf and grab a bag of the same salty, barely-edible gruel I’ve eaten for breakfast for the past week. I miss toast, and bagels, and bacon cut up and spread on top of a bowl of scrambled eggs and cheese sauce, but the gruel is all I have the energy to prepare.

I open the bag and put it to my lips. The flavor that I loved so much as a kid infests my mouth as it slides down my throat. It hits my stomach like a bowling ball dropped from the top of a skyscraper and the shadow laughs at me as I struggle to keep it down.

The knife slips from the nerve’s grasp. The computer’s arms drop to its sides. The shadow goes quiet.

The weights shrink a little, the knives become slightly more dull, and I feel the cotton in my head fade. It’s just enough for me to stand up and find something more substantial to eat. Nothing sounds good, but I need more. Anything will do, as long as it won’t kill me.

I never know how sharp the knives will be, how heavy the weights are. I never know when the shadow will tie me to my bed and force me to cancel plans with the people I care about the most.

I never know when a “good” day or “bad” day will happen, and it’s slowly eating away at me.
