Me: Wow, Cinematherapy is a nice wholesome channel to watch. It's nice to watch a video shorter than three hours dissecting a movie, and to do it with two very nice, wholesome guys who promote honesty, open communication, and being kind. In Defense of Ariel

Okay, odd title I know but CinemaTherapy just did a ‘Therapist Reacts’ to The Little Mermaid and...I have thoughts. 

On the whole, I do like the fact that they didn’t just immediately say ‘oh this movie’s bad because she gives up her voice for a guy she just met’ but I feel like they overlooked some aspects because they only react to certain clips rather than react to the whole movie. 

The whole catalyst as to why Ariel even goes to Ursula’s is because of Triton blowing up her grotto. Even after Flotsam and Jetsam try to lure Ariel in with the promise of ‘you and your Prince, together forever’, she tells them to go away and goes back to crying. It’s only after one of the eels flicks the face of the broken statue of Eric, the statue that her father had just blown to smithereens, toward her that she agrees to follow them. 

So Ariel, who’s 16 years old and who’s already been proven to be impulsive and reckless (sunken ship at the beginning of the movie for starters), was given the option to be together with Eric forever. Isn’t that the main complaint? That she gives up her voice for a man? 

Had it only been about Eric, she would have gone immediately. But it’s not. Because Ariel had to be reminded what her life would be like had she stayed. Odds were that she probably wasn’t seen favorably (I mean Sebastian even says after she turns human ‘if we could get that witch to give you back your voice, we could turn you back and you could swim around with all the normal fish and...and just be miserable for the rest of your life’.) 

If a member of her father’s court felt comfortable enough to basically say that she wasn’t normal to her face, then what could she possibly have been hearing from others? 

(Again this is all theory since there’s no evidence to show that the kingdom treated her cruelly but still). 

She has no collection, nothing that brings her joy anymore because her father destroyed it all. And even if she tried to rebuild, that grotto would be forever tarnished by that memory (and we know from the sequel that it does get rebuilt which makes me wonder if her sisters did that for her since the memory would be painful for Triton too). 

So of course Ariel goes to see Ursula, to get a chance at a life she’s longed for. Eric’s just the cherry on top. And even then, even after Triton destroys the thing Ariel holds most dear to her, she still stops and says ‘If I become human, I’ll never be with my father or sisters again’. 

And yes, Ariel does sign the contract (without reading it, which makes me wonder if there’s not a clause in there that states that Ursula can interfere like she did by tipping the boat and then turning into Vanessa). But she’s emotionally shaken, potentially traumatized by her own father, and now her aunt (if you go by the deleted scenes and the Broadway show) is pressuring her into entering a contract. There’s no time to think things over, no time to leave and come back. No time to have a mer-lawyer look over the contract. 

...I think I’ve lost the point of my very long post. 

But anyway, Ariel doesn’t become human for Eric. She doesn’t go to Ursula for Eric. She goes because she essentially feels like it’s the last chance she has for her happiness. 

Oh and also--Eric is a sea fairing, musical, kind soul who loves his dog to the point that he’ll risk his life for him and, even after getting his hopes dashed that the mute stranger he finds washed up on the beach isn’t the girl he’s been looking for, still takes her back to his castle to help her. It’s not like Ariel is settling in terms of the cherry on top of the ‘wanting to be human’ cake!

I thought I would share this information, on YT there’s a channel called Cinema Therapy that diagnoses fictional characters, including villains. This aspect bothered me because 1: therapists cannot officially diagnose patients, that’s for psychologists. 2: fictional characters cannot 100% give you a full accurate overview, to give murderous fictional villains an actual diagnosis has ramifications for real people.P1

I haven't watched any videos of CT and I have no information of other problematic issues revolving them. But @9worldstales has described their diagnosing in this post(which I recommend reading it) and agrees that they ignored some of the aspects of Loki's story and side material to reach their conclusion:

"If you watch the video (recorded prior to the series) you realize they make a HUGE canon mistake right at the start. They assume Loki’s magical powers come from Loki being a Frost Giant.

That’s not bad will from their part, this is actually based on how they’ve watched the movies… and nothing else so they skipped all the additional side material and cut scenes. They didn’t watch the cut scene in “Thor: The Dark World” saying how Loki learnt magic from his mother nor read it in a side material publication or interview. They have no idea Loki’s sceptre was influencing him in “The Avengers” because that’s only written on Marvel’s web and not present in the movies and don’t seem to consider Loki in the year between “Thor” and “The Avengers” had to go through something terrible that could involve Thanos and torture or even death since that was only mentioned in interviews and in pretty vague terms. They consider “Thor: Ragnarok” part of the canon without considering how Taika Waititi deliberately, for his own admission, retconned it.

So their analysis uses the 5 movies and considers Loki in ‘perfect’ psychological state through the 5 of them. And it makes sense Cinematherapy analysis are meant to talk to casual viewers not to fans who knows everything about the movies."

It seems based on both your assessments that their interpretation of these movies is on a surface level and you can't have a correct conclusion if you don't pay attention to the details like subtexts. Loki being mind influenced was subtext in Avengers. He remembered Thor tossing him into an abyss which Thor didn't. This shows his memories were tampered with. The behavior of the heroes around the scepter showed how it could heighten their negative traits and stop them from rational thought and behavior. The direct link the Other had to Loki's mind and Loki being under duress wasn't even subtext! So I don't trust their reading when they failed to notice these things. Also even if you count TR as canon, Loki's traits would be so contradictory it still won't let you reach a conclusion about him having NPD or not. It seems to me they don't put much effort or at least haven't put much effort in analyzing Loki, since their target audience are casual viewers.
