So I've been watching Cold Case and then scrolled through Tumblr and saw a gif set of Hollanov in black and white which if you've ever watched Cold Case they use black and white for the older cases so..
Fic where Hollanov is a cold case, where when Hockey was still sort of a young sport Shane and Ilya were some of the first to play, the story plays the same way for the most part but then Shane and Ilya disappear from the game, no warning, no announcement to their teams or the public.
Yuna and David file a missing persons for their son but the coach of Ilya's team files for Ilya after confirming that Ilya did not return to Russia.
There are many ways for this to go but my thoughts are
A)Ilya was taken to Russia and killed while Shane just vanishes, forced to live without Ilya but not able to contort himself in the image that would be expected of him
B)They ran away together to live in a small town where no one cared about two bachelors living in the same house
or if you want to be evil,
C)the Metros find out and kill Shane for being gay and for being with Ilya as a traitor and Ilya is left alive to be without Shane and because of reasons doesn't kill himself, like maybe Shane made him promise if he died on the ice Ilya would keep living for both of them.
But the case is reopened because Ilya's niece and Hayden's daughter met at school and found out that their family was connected via the rivalry during a family history project.
Ilya's niece has one photo of her uncle and in it he's hugging a smiling Shane at some no account Bar.
And the person working the case has to track down all these old timer Hockey players who wonder what happened to those two or don't care.
Hunter reveals that he knew they were together but kept it secret, he never even told his long term boyfriend.
"I always hoped that they ended up together, the world wasn't ready for the kind of love they felt, it was explosive, on and off the ice, still isn't really, not in Hockey, maybe one day someone can kiss the man they love on center ice after winning the Cup but...,not then."
"I never told a soul, what I knew, never dared, that kind of talk, even as a joke got people beat or killed, Rozanov being Russian, he'd have been taken back and killed, probably. It was a risk they must have felt worth it."
If you go with A) then maybe they find Shane teaching kids Hockey at some kind of charity camp for under privleged kid or being no where near the Hockey world but working as a social worker for LGBTQ Youth under the name Shane Rozanov
For B)they find them together whether after they've died or at their home is up to writer.
For C)Ilya, it turns out, is nearly the owner of the NHL and has been silently removing problematic players and making moves for better inclusions and keeping track of the men who he knows or suspects killed Shane, no one would have believed him if he'd accused them when Shane was killed he knows that so he kept track of them, even Pike though he wasn't involved.
He's a very mysterious figure that even the person working the case can't really get an interview with until the Metros are arrested and he comes in to watch the interrogations
"I have waited so long for the truth to be told, for Shane to have Justice, all he wanted was to play Hockey and to be with me, they took that from him, from us."
"Everything I've done was for him, for what we couldn't have, there's a boy who plays for the Centaurs, he brings his boyfriend to games without fear, he can kiss him in public and still be loved by those who watch." Ilya touches Shane's face in the picture Ilya's niece lent the detective, "We never got that, the world was not ready, not for us, what we were. I love him very much."
Whether Yuna and David are still alive or they never know what happened to Shane is also up to the writer.
