There must be a way to level the playing field a bit between brick-and-mortar shops and cheaper, more convenient online retailers, ideally sooner rather than later.

My long answer: No, and fuck the overpaid columnist-class assholes like this writer who beg the question to justify putting paywalls around the few commons we have left as a means of supposedly preserving them, especially given this industry is far more under threat from private-equity vulture capitalism and good ol fashioned monopoly than any supposed user malfeasance...
