ships in the night,

only meant to cross paths

and continue on our way,

but we threw ropes across

from your deck to mine

and my deck to yours,

and we held on for dear life.

Until the storms blew through and frayed them,

until the sun came up and blinded us,

until you started looking off toward the horizon.

You dropped the ropes and sailed away,

and I looked down at the blisters on my hands

and suddenly remembered

there was somewhere else I was supposed to be.
