TW: Death, and brief mention of past suicidal ideation
"Tell me, did you ever imagine you'd die like this?"
"Actually, yes. This is exactly how I imagined I'd die." Daemen snorted back immediately. Max was surprised for a moment, until he glanced over and saw the unamused look on Daemens face. "No of course this was not how I thought I would die, dim wit. I mean, just look around us." Daemen gestured forward with a huff.
A wasteland. That's what Max saw. The tops of buildings peaked out from waves of endless sand. An island floated in the distance, with a gleaming purple waterfall, that poured down into a dark hole that never seemed to fill. The sun was setting, a gorgeous golden light. It was beautiful, but terrifyingly empty. Then he looked back at Daemen, a literal ghost of what he once was. Their knees were bent, and their arms were crossed and rested gentle over the tops of their knees. His incorporeal form wavered and warped in the breeze. Could they feel that? Was it uncomfortable?
Max swallowed and looked away, "Oh… Yeah." He shook his head. "Guess that was kind of obvious."
There was a long pause. Then, "I thought I was going to die lots of times," Daemen spoke quietly, like he didnt want anyone else to overhear, even though, as far as he knew, Max and him were the only two people left on earth.
"I thought I was going to die when I was 7 years old and fell off my bike for the first time. I thought i was going to die when I was 12 and realized that in the eyes of the church all I would ever be was a servant. I thought God would smite me down at 14 when I realized I wasn't a girl. Hell, I begged him to. I thought my mother would kill me when she found out I trans at 16 and threw me out."
The silence hung heavy in the air. That one had been Max's fault. Not intentionally. But he was so so reckless then, and so thoughtless.
Max dared to sneak another glance. Daemen had rested his head on his arms. His lip trembled. He looked so small.
"…And I thought I was going to die when I finally realized you didnt love me back."
Max opened his mouth immediately to refute but... nothing came. He wasn't so thoughtless anymore. Nothing he could say would make this any better. So he didn't.
They sat like that for a long time. Staring at the sunset together, until it was dark, and cold. Max could've sworn he heard some quiet sniffles and small hiccups from Daemen. But he didn't look. Neither of them ever did. That was the agreement. That was the rule.
Daemen got up first. His footsteps silent, but Max registered the movement in his peripheral vision. All he got was a gentle "goodnight" from Daemen.
And then Max was alone.

Congratulations to Daemen Coach Mike MacDonald for winning his 500th game! He's the only coach (that I'm aware of) that has won 100+ games as a Head Coach in NCAA DI, NCAA DII AND NCAA DIII.
It's Wednesday morning, February 5, 2025.....and we have three undefeated teams within all of men's basketball at the small college levels: Daemen, Washburn and Wesleyan. Let me tell you a little bit about each of these teams....
Daemen is coached by Mike McDonald, who has a really unique story. He's the only coach that I know that has won 100+ games as a Head Coach at the NCAA DI level (Canisius), Division II level (Daemen) and Division III level (Medaille).....and never had to move from his same house! Daemen is currently 19-0 and is winning by an average of 23.7 ppg. They are shooting 52% fg, while holding opponents to 36.1% fg. The are out-rebounding opponents by 9.7 rpg, and they share the ball really well, averaging 19.8 apg. Their next game is on Friday at STAC.
Washburn is coached by Brett Ballard, who comes from the Bill Self coaching tree. Washburn is 21-0, while playing in the tough MIAA. The same five starters have started all 21 games, and the Ichabods are deep, with eight players averaging double digits in minutes played per game. None of their top seven scorers has missed a game this season. Washburn is winning by an average of 22.4 ppg, while holding opponents to 64.4 ppg. The Ichabods are shooting 51.4% fg, while holding opponents to 40.2% fg. Their next game is at home against Central Missouri on Saturday.
Wesleyan is coached by Joe Reilly, who is in his 17th season as the Head Coach of the Cardinal program. This will be the 10th consecutive winning season for Wesleyan. The Cardinals are now 21-0, playing in the tough NESCAC league. They have just gone through an incredibly tough portion of the schedule, going unscathed in this stretch of games against Williams, Middlebury, Hamilton, Amherst, Trinity and Tufts. Wesleyan is winning by 19.1 ppg, while out-rebounding opponents by 10.6 per game, and averaging 17 assists per game. The Cardinals next game is this Saturday at Bates.
