What Is Spectral Justice?
Erasure is an insidious pattern of harm where people are made invisible or unknowable.
The violence is both digital and material. Digitally, this takes the form of governance without democratic accountability. Materially, this takes the form of state-enabled disposability. With the ascendence of algorithmic control, there is not so much a line between digital and physical erasure as continuity.
Spectral justice represents the tools for mapping—and resisting—erasure.
The term comes from the philosophical concept of “hauntology” from Jacques Derrida, which describes how things erased (or denied) still shape the present.
Your “hauntological” rights as a data subject.
Data subject rights give you legal control over your personal data: what’s collected, who stores it, how it’s used, and how to challenge it. These rights vary by country.
Canada: Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA): Know what personal data a private company has about you, access that data, request corrections, file a complaint about misuse.
European Union (EU)/EEA: Digital Services Act (DSA) “Statement of Reasons” right: platforms must explain moderation/removal actions when asked under Article 17. GDPR: you have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object and get data portability.
United Kingdom: UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018: Right to object to automated decision-making, and right to lodge a complaint with the ICO
United States: No federal data protection law. California (CCPA / CPRA): Know what’s collected, Opt out of sale of personal data, Request deletion, Correct inaccurate data
Australia: Privacy Act 1988, Brazil: LGPD (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados), South Africa: POPIA, Japan: Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI), Taiwan: Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), New Zealand: Privacy Act 2020, South Korea: Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
About TikTok - it looks like the US Government forgot about the Cute Cat Theory of Digital Activism.
This theory is where most people in the world use online platforms for mainstream things such as looking at cat photos rather than doing/being informed on activism.
When access to cute cat photos (or other mainstream things) get interupted by a social media ban, those people who used social media casually would become more aware with activist ideas.
If TikTok was left alone, people would have stayed ignorant about RedNote.
More info on the theory by the author (Ethan Zuckerman) here.
Let's be An Activist Like Me
Activism has many forms and does not always have to be physical activism as people generally do. The forms of activism that I have done are educational, digital, and community activism. All this I do is for a good purpose, and I can guarantee that.
Of course there are many challenges that I have felt and in many cases I have overcome them. One example is how some people don't consider what digital activism I do to be activism and they are wrong. I am more capable of doing it in that form and I am successful in it.
Activism doesn't always have to be big things. The small good things we might do every day are enough to make us activists like watering flowers, creating artworks, feeding animals on the street, or volunteering in a local community. To be more meaningful, we need to share them.
I have and always have done that, as you know. With more people knowing, more people will be aware. At least from myself I can be an inspiration or encouragement for other people to do the same, and I would be very grateful for that. So, share your activism.
What about you? Have you done any activism? Everyone can be an activist, or even, everyone should be an activist. There are many issues that we must solve together. We must talk about it, and move toward positive change in any capacity. Don't be shy, don't be afraid, start now.
We humans are part of one big family of humanity. Humanity is one. We all live on the same planet, our beloved planet: Earth. There is no other home for us but on Earth. Let us do good, not only for humanity but also the Earth, starts from ourselves. I love you.

Peru's Gen Z Protests: A Case Study in Global Youth Political Engagement
Current events in Peru demonstrate how digital-native generations are reshaping political discourse worldwide. Following pension system reforms and amid widespread corruption allegations, Peruvian youth have organized sustained protests against President Dina Boluarte's administration.
Key factors driving the movement:
Economic policy impacts on young people's futures
Governance transparency and accountability demands
Cross-cultural symbolism (One Piece anime references)
Digital organization and international solidarity
This reflects broader trends in youth political engagement across Nepal, Bangladesh, India, and other nations where Gen Z activists leverage technology for rapid mobilization and sustained pressure on institutions.
For organizations and leaders: Understanding these dynamics is crucial for engaging younger stakeholders who prioritise transparency, authenticity, and systemic change over traditional political approaches.
