Does anybody have a song that you can no long listen to becuase reminds you of someone? Like I can’t listen to do I wanna know? by Arctic Monkeys without crying crying and feeling anxious, becuase of this guy I was talking too and started to fall madly in love with sent a voice recording of him singing this song.
While with some things I have a nearly life-long, or decades long history of being a fan of it, spn is probably the only thing I have *contiguously* and actively engaged with as a source text for over 10 years...14 seasons now. It’s WILD.
And now I have written meta on...engaging with a long-running tv series and meta. Forgive me.
There are things that go dormant, and then revive, they make a new thing, or it gets rebooted or revitalized. There are things I occasionally rewatch, and always love.
But sometimes I don’t know what to do with SPN. I posted meta here for S 8-10. S1-7 was mostly discussion elsewhere. There is a huge hole in my meta posting here for S11-13...I simply posted no meta here about it although I was on twitter and blurting thoughts out and discussing it. I haven’t always felt as actively engaged with the canon as I do at other times but there isn’t a season I haven’t at least watched after the fact, breaking down finally to catch up once even newer canon enchants me again. Or a season I haven’t engaged with the canon on some level although yes I do sometimes just not watch for a little while and pull back from putting so much creative energy into it.
But I am sometimes just...flummoxed...at the long haul of it and that I’m still intrigued by it, this far long, without years long gaps. For a show 14 seasons old to turn out the quality spn still does is madness. (I simply don’t see most of it as poor writing...it’s uneven but it’s also complex and emotionally resonant and well-crafted). Most shows I am into have an average life-span of 5 seasons.
It’s exhausting at times and there is no way a canon this sprawling will please me every single season. But on the whole I find it lands in ways that keeps me in. I’m not looking to recapture the SPN of 10 seasons or 5 or whatever seasons ago. While I treasure some of those seasons and the giddiness. Some things get lost...but other things are gained. In some ways it’s a show with more breadth and depth and self-confidence than the early golden era.
Early seasons had some inadequate writing. Late seasons have some astonishingly good writing. Fans have rage-quit in every season. Sometimes I was the rage-quitter. Some come back. Some don’t. Some stay season after season while it makes them miserable and they keep yelling at it why aren’t you like you were in aught mumble something. Some do that for years. Me, I don’t bother with it unless it’s still exciting and enjoyable for me, but my main point is, this isn’t exactly a usual situation, in terms of how fans engage with it. Because I have been watching since 1x01 aired and I didn’t expect to be this interested in spn any more.
